He was asking about why I don't run OSX, I asked him if that was Apple only, Apple (outside of the minimac) is, to me, expensive, he was also bragging on his Powerbook out-performing Windows machines, but Powerbooks cost a bit more than minimacs. It would have been more forthcoming/open/honest to compare the cost of his *powerbook* with the cost of the windows machines it was out-performing.
None of which is relevant to the Linux vs. Windows ease-of-use discussion he dropped his replies into.
"Linux was never about laziness." No, but computing and playing games *are* about laziness - computers are tools to help us do more faster: If I'm spending my time learning a new OS, that's time I'm not being productive. Or enjoying my recreation (games).
Bash Windows all you want, until Linux can show real competitive advantage in ease-of-use, it will continue to be a minority on desktops.
Do you drive an alternatively-fueled vehicle, or do you support the monopolistic petroleum industry?
Do you live in an alternative-framed home, or do you support the monpolistic lumber industry?
I use tools that I find useful. I have Firefox installed, I have Open Office installed, and I am s-l-o-w-l-y learning about Linux, as I want my next system to be a 64-bit AMD, run fast, without any windows on it at all.
Want Linux picked up by more people sooner? Make it easier to use. Nobody has to *like* the 900 lb. gorilla known as american intellectual laziness, but it's where the *vast* majority of market share is. Personally, I'm thankful for it in others, it keeps me employed.
No, not a dolt, but really: When I built my AsusK7M Athlon700 Win98SE system, with 15" monitor, keyboard, printer and mouse it cost me $1200.00: I knew *nothing* of open source or linux at the time.
Now: How much would it cost to buy your Powerbook set-up? It seems very much like you're attempting bait (minimac) and switch (powerbook), when the original post and my reply were on the topic of *Linux* (learning curve, secure, minus games functionality) vs. *Windows* (known quantity, less secure, plus games) - your replies are irrelevant. If you want to be helpful, discuss Linux capabilities with regards to games.
Lazy. When Linux (any flavor) is as easy to use as Windows (admittedly, Firefox and Open Office are installed on my boxes already), when Linux will run my games with the same "double-click the icon" ease, I'll switch - until then, I don't complain about windows because I know I chose it consciously. I admit being lazy. Linux needs to earn my respect by catering to my laziness.
$5 per ticket/chance, one number drawn per year, he'll have all the funds he needs to bridge the gap between the wealthy-only model and making space-flight as common-place as air travel is today. I'd buy a few tickets for that drawing... (a royalty check for the idea would not be refused, hint, hint)
Open up gaps between the secondary light source and receptors such that they criss-cross the inside of your desktop's case... web of light, home-brewed koyanisqatsi (sp?) sequel - I wouldn't mind having a larger box if it would work the way I'm seeing/imagining it... Whaddaya know? Per the article, lasers really *are* cool! (cooler than wires anyway).
Sure, I can see that: your ISP generates or subscribes to a white-list of encryption-approved IPs/ranges registered to financial institutions and merchants (licensed, in the cases of US-origin businesses) and rejects all encrypted traffic that doesn't go to or come from an IP on the list.
Gotta stop, I'm scaring myself...
I'm laughing a bit because I have no real concerns with issues of copyrights vs. fair use, nor with privacy (I'm firmly convinced it does *not* exist on any Internet-connected computer), and I don't really wish for what I posted originally - I just have an odd imagination.
Since I don't really wish to be that much more helpful to the Dread *AA Empires, this post will be my last in this thread.

Going about things backwards? Imagine with me, if you will, a bootable CD (Damn Small or Knoppix) that also contains the single-player version of a really cool MMORPG - you don't *have* to have Linux installed, but you *do* need to boot from that disk for a play session... After having played it, *then* download the files needed for the online version for some ridiculously small subscription/donation... Watch the OS osmose its way into yet another user's life...
Please re-consider: Just as the vast majority of our troops probably do not really wish to be enforcing their Commander-in-Chief's wishes in Iraq, so, too, the individuals collecting their livelihoods in NASA may not necessarily enjoy what they're directed to do or refrain from doing. While I certainly agree a resignation is in order, I think it should be from a much higher position... Of course, it's not like George ever reads/. (nor, for that matter, would any of his staff ever read it to him), but, who knows? One can only hope...
As a survivor of such abuse myself, I can tell you that pedophiles may be innocent, truly not knowing or understanding the harm they do - rather like rabid dogs. Treatment for both should be the same.
Euthanasia.
God can forgive 'em, if there is such a Being. I don't.
These articles and posts could not have come at a better time: I'm designing a site to host works for authors who wish to publish electronically, offering services both ala carte and packaged: proceeds from sales of works belong entirely to the authors, the only funds I'll get are in hosting, Bowker numbers, and so on...Thank you, Everybody! (Anyone wishing to assist with legitimate SEO is more than welcome to email me to discuss arrangements).
There will always be people who need support in order to use software: Most members of the group mentioned find it far easier to pay someone else whose only claim to proficiency may be having read the documentation available and used the program in question.
Okay, maybe it's not glamorous, but it is steady employment... No big money in market-cornering software? Maybe not, but there's still a comfortable living to be had supporting it, market-cornering or not.
I've seen one individual charging $67 for the "blog and ping" method to get pages spidered faster in Google - have you considered developing the points in your post into a comprehensive how-to ebook and charging for it? I have a site in development, intending to offer electronic publishing (e-books in.pdf), basically hosting work for authors who don't have time to learn web, they just want to write and have their work available on-line (I'm one of the authors, also). I don't know that much about web (I use Front-Page), but do know there's room for the business, especially the way I intend to run it.
Any and all assistance appreciated.
Teach a machine how to find and extrapolate "meaning", then turn it loose on philosophy.
Or, turn it into something capable of extracting meaning from interstellar "noise" - verify its findings...
if they truly *are* out to get you. Wanna keep a secret? Create a cheesy one-page website and offer something for sale that nobody wants for more than anyone would willingly spend - nobody will read it, and you're safe. Seriously, anyone who believes privacy, secrecy or security exist anywhere on a network-connected computer is in for a deep disillusionment. But, most people already knew *that*.
Has anybody in power in any of the space-faring nations read "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"? Limited gains, no: limited imaginations, unfortunately, yes. sigh.

I'm not suggesting *requiring* anything, and any investor or employee who practices due diligence can see straight through the tactic you describe, but: it seems to me that making upper-level mangement's compensation closer to *performance* based would only benefit everyone involved. As a side note, pin all raises to the lowest-paid employees in absolute terms: If the clerks only get $.10 per hour, the bosses only get $.10 per hour. 5% of minimum wage won't come close to 5% of $200,000+ per year. I bet that'd cause some changes...
Voluntary open discussion of compensation at all levels will be one of the things that sets great firms apart from the not-so-great: When the upper-muckety-greed-heads realize that the best way to get paid is by increasing shareholder value and receiving numbers of shares in the corporation as the majority (if not totality) of their compensation, *THEN* you've got great management. "Salary? $100,000.00, but I tripled that in our stock last year...."
If/when this company ever goes to a publicly-traded stock available status, I'll be buying..
Thank you.

for an ISP to deal with the pressure behind the situation: "If we can't read it, we won't pass it across our portion of the Internet."
