  14. Argument... on ISP Rise Against P2P Users · · Score: 5, Insightful

I once got into an argument with a former ISP admin.

It went along the lines of this:

Him: You can't just download massive amounts of data from bittorrent etc.
Me: Why not? All the ISP's talk about "unlimited" broadband, by that very definition they aren't limiting it.
Him: But they have to pay for that bandwidth.
Me: Yeah? And I pay for them to provide me a service that is unlimited as advertised, if they're complaining now about how people are using more bandwidth than they expected then that's too bad. They advertised it as unlimited (something a LOT of UK ISP's do), and now they're complaining? They've only got themselves to blame.

Long story short, all these ISPs who are whinging only have themselves to blame. They hark on about "SUPER FAST BROADBAND1!!1!! WITH NO LIMITS!!!11!!" and then they discover that people actually use it?

The problem with that is, in order for the revocation to take effect the user needs to download the root certs update which will be provided by their browser vendor (which in this case will more than likely mean MS) and lets face facts the majority of users never even bother updating, the fickle masses that they are.

A revoked cert isn't the solution, the solution is fixing the process by which people can get SSL certificates in the first place. There need to be more checks and balances. The current process is essentially; give us your money please, ok here's your certificate.. Enjoy!

On the plus side, Sydney is a kicking place so you don't particularly have much want to watch tv.

  24. Re:ReactOS is recommended on ReactOS Code Audit · · Score: 1

Yep, ReactOS is aiming for NT 4 (I assume SP6, since they did change the driver architecture from what.. SP3? I think it was specifically to do with video drivers and moving it into kernel space or something..) compatibility.

I believe ReactOS are hoping for the ability to use NT 4 drivers as well, which is a good idea.. but considering that a lot of newer hardware manufacturers are no longer making NT4 drivers might be problematic.

In order to get IE 7 installed, first you'd need to get around the genuine advantage check.. then you'd need to (probably) report the OS as NT 5.1 with SP2 installed to the program. Plus, they'd also need to implement a lot of the NT 5.1 SP2 changes to ReactOS/WINE codebase.

Note: I haven't read much from the ReactOS site recently, so I may be wrong partly.
