I have a PVR, the Humax 9200T. It allows me to record etc from digital tv/radio.
I can transfer those recordings from it to a pc via a USB connection, unfortunately whenever I want to transfer those it means connecting my laptop upto it. Because of the PVR's location in a cabinet it is a bit of hassle.

With a wireless usb adapter it essentially means I can transfer those recordings to my laptop/desktop pc with the minimum of hassle.

Not everything uses or supports bluetooth.

  3. Interesting... on Windows XP Service Pack 3 Not Due Until 2007 · · Score: 5, Insightful

Has anyone else noticed Microsofts gradual decrease in providing updates?
For example, NT 4 had 6 service packs and number 7 was not released. But supposedly was pretty much complete, number 7 added a bunch of features that were supposedly in Windows 2000.. and with the release of Windows 2000 just around the corner.. why would they want to make 2000 less appealing?

Also, notice that 2000 has just 4 service packs..

And it's looking more like XP will be getting just 3 by the end of life period, now... either Microsoft have absolutely amazing QA which means they're fixing all the bugs in their OS's by the last service pack or they want to force people onto their newest OS with the promises of bug fixes etc.

This is disheartening, they're trying to force people into a perpetual upgrade cycle and are being very successful at it too. I guess we can only hope that stuff like Linux and OpenOffice start making some inroads to at least reduce the price of Windows to help reduce the pressure on people who are locked into MS solutions.

This can be reduced somewhat by making the internet zone very restricted and simply making a whitelist of sites and put them in the trusted sites list.
It doesn't solve everything like the recent WMF exploit but it does stop what I lovingly refer to as "dumbfuck user" syndrome, which exhibits such symptoms as the inability to read, lack of intelligence and an inherent lack of cognitive reasoning.

Unforunately the company I work at are currently locked into some bespoke software that REQUIRES lock admin rights. I'm currently trying my utmost to get all windows machines onto XP so I can atleast get IE and Outlook running in reduced priveleges mode using dropmyrights. (if anyone knows of a way to do the same under Win 2k please let me know)

The estate of Terry Nation (the people who own the rights to the Daleks after Nation died in '97) demanded very little in the way of changes to the looks of the daleks. The BBC tried to get them to update the daleks for the 21st century but they wouldn't budge.
Hence why they still look like they do, HOWEVER.. there are a number of Dalek surprises in the new Dr. Who series, so don't be so quick to knock them. (over.. *cough* sorry)

The special effects as a whole on the Dr. Who series vary from okay to excellent.
Special mention should be made of the episodes "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances", which quite frankly are the best scifi episodes i've seen in years bar none, not only for the special effects but for the incredible writing and directing.

  10. Re:Future problems? on First Blu-ray Movie Titles Announced · · Score: 1

Digital photography and tv's are significantly different, for normal consumer cameras I think they're reaching the good enough stage, however for amateur photographers (and professionals) we're always wanting the next big thing because greater resolution gives us greater detail along with better cameras that give greater ISO and colour accuracy.
Also, partly because we want to print stuff out to quite large prints.. A lot of stuff I photograph I print to A4, however at work (I work at a printer) we have a B0 (if memory serves correctly) which i'm itching to use for photos from my new camera.
This (829KB) is one of quite a few photos that I took when on holiday in Australia that got me into photography, at the time I used a consumer level camera. Those are good enough to print to A4 but if I were to print them to B0 they'd be quite blocky.

And yes I know there is quite a bit of noise in the sky, it was a ten second exposure on new years eve in Sydney. (lots of smoke from the fireworks which add to the haze)

I'm more interested in hearing when they start packing full seasons of standard-definition content onto a single disc that they can sell for a reasonable price, instead of the >$100 prices that some sets have been going for. (I.e. $338 for CSI on Amazon [amazon.com])

Don't count on it, it's the profit motive. I can guarantee you with blu-ray/hd-dvd you'll still get a few episodes per disc and they'll still charge you a small fortune to get entire seasons. Same with the special editions and re-releases of old films, they'll re-release them and still charge a fortune even though they've recouped the cost of making the film a thousand fold. It's capitalism.

  12. Future problems? on First Blu-ray Movie Titles Announced · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think the movie studios (tv etc) are going to start hitting a wall soon.
Think about it, after hi-def what comes next? (and don't say internet distribution etc only, people want things they can actually own in their hands)
First it was video cassettes, then dvd and now hi-definition.. each with a definitive quality increase over their predecessor. Now however with high definition they've pretty much hit the wall, people don't need or won't want to buy super-high-deluxe-definition unless they've got a projector which projects the video onto a ridiculously large area.
It will reach a point where it'll be "good enough", you can already see a lot of people commenting about how they don't see the point of hi-def dvd (which people will eventually go over to) when dvd suits them fine.

Fascinating stuff, apparently it has the best eyes around.

It's incredibly short sighted and not very bright either. But, that's what the business world is very often like.

It's also possible that the people who created the site aren't fully competent (see business world reason above).

I just tried visiting the site myself (with UA switcher extension set to Safari) and was amazed that it wouldn't let me in if I had JS or cookies disabled as well.
This surprised the heck out of me, it's like saying we won't let you browse our shop if we at first ensure we can take note of everything you look at. Would you like it if you went into a gap shop and they stopped you at the door and said you can only enter this shop if you allow a minder to watch everything you do and also do you mind if we look in your bag to make sure you have some money?
It's bad business, even if someone isn't buying. A person just browsing has the chance of returning in the future as a buyer.

I'd hope they did, it'd probably help reduce people installing rootkits with certain audio cd's although I doubt it'd eliminate it, there'd still be people who blindly type in their password (if they'd bothered to enter one in the first place).

Also, on a sidenote.. MS aren't exactly standing on the moral superiority high ground here (I skimmed the article), how can they expect programmers to implement this with their programs when by default everyone is a local admin in windows and so far the only program which is supposed to use LUA is IE7 which isn't even released yet?

It's not true for all people granted, but it's a sad fact that a very large portion of people are like this.
