  1. Actual product info - frequencies, FCC regs on Build Your Own Cell tower · · Score: 2, Informative

Someone has a great post on: http://www2.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12419431~m ode=flat~days=9999~start=20 The phones are shipped from the Philipines and are 220v. They are OEM models and not at all intended for the US market... for good reason. The poster dgc3154, checked the actual frequencies and they are transmitting - base at 450 Mhz (Private frequencies - FCC violation) and the phones at 230MHz (Aircraft frequencies - big FCC violation) They do supposedly work as advertised. The poster was able to use them at over 10 miles on an improper mount with excellent quality and full Caller ID data. This would be great if you were in an area where the said frequencies were unregulated. Given that we're in the US, it might be ... uh... better buy a cell phone and not have the FCC knocking on your door category.

Each account allows for 10 characters per server. I have a friend that comes over and plays a character on my account/computer when I'm too busy doing something else to play. I also have an alternate character that I play for the fun of trying a different race, faction and class. Additionally there is very little need for 'mules' as there's an adequate in game bank system. Lastly, having "mule" characters is very disadvantageous to you as mailing items among characters costs 30c per item. Hence mailing items to yourself frequently is a big cash drain.

  3. Re:Multiple accounts on EULA Confusion w/ Used Copies of WoW? · · Score: 1

Just to clarify this, an account is a billing department issue... you pay $15/month per account. Getting 10 accounts would cost you $150/month Each account can have up to 10 characters (what you're thinking of) per server, on each and every server. You could use multiple characters for storage but this would be..uh....how does one say...pointless. The in game mail has a small fee per item mailed (with in game currency) and if you were to use the other characters for storage you'd soon find yourself spending too much money on mail. The bank system is quite sufficient when combined with the in game economy (Auction House.)

I'm actually much more impressed with robo-pet. The proposed price of $70 for something that can manage commands, has touch sensors, can be walked on a "laser leash" (assuming that means it'll follow a laser pointer around) and can learn like AIBO at almost 1/10th of the cost....WOW

I sincerely doubt the new robosapien will be a success though. For $200 it's no longer in the upper range of toys - it's entering the price range of video game systems, televisions... the feature set is impressibe but most will likely never really use them.
Unless there are practical applications - RoboSapien - get me a beer!

Actually that doesn't make much sense. An ISP makes money on accounts - not on bandwidth sold. It is far more profitable to have tons of customers who underutilize their bandwidth. Underutilization, especially with cable where bandwidth is shared, means lower expenses.

I agree with the guy who said that most broadband subscribers are folks who check their email daily and won't want to wait for cnn.com to load. It has also gotten to the price point where dial up over a dedicated phone line doesn't make economic sense. From personal experiences, a lot of people just don't want the mess of a second phone line, connect times and having to "dial in."

While this seems like a real win I am quite curious when we'll see the first "voluntary cooperation" from ISPs. Why would the ISPs cooperate when they could lose clients? File sharing, especially those who run servers with large video files are bandwidth hogs. By voluntarily complying not only are they getting a good nod from RIAA/MPAA (which they will need once they all start selling PVRs) but also eliminating their bandwidth hogs.

I completely agree. I have tried both in class and software language trainign. The lanugage software can only help in areas such spelling or testing but is not worth it.

I have also participated in corporate training (in english) where 60% of the students were from Asia and the EU. In this case, translation software and/or website were of big help.

When engaging in conversation, students do not have time to open up a paper dictionary and asking for definitions can be both embarrasing and disruptive. A quick online translator allows the student to keep up while making sure they're not missing anything.

If anything, let them use automatic translators during conversation practice and maybe...maybe have some software for them to practice on after class

I apologize for my error in citing H1B as a "Guest worker" which carries the connotation of being short term.

We need doctors, lawyers, policemen, teachers, firemen, etc. Why not "special" immigration programs for them?

As a matter of fact we do have special programs for doctors. There is a large trend of smaller rural areas importing doctors from abroad because most american doctors would not move to the middle of nowhere.

College professors have special cultural exchange programs as well.

Why do we not have more programs for bringing in talent? You're right. We should have more of these programs.

American Xenophobia vs American common sense. The author asks why does a nation of immigrants now frown on immigrants. The "cause of anger among many Americans" is the hipocracy I was thinking of when I wrote the word xenophobia. It's the mentality of 'my parents immigrated when it was still honorable' while the 'they' are 'economic mirgrants' (aka leeches.)

    It's bad policy... agreed.

American xenophobia is increasingly common and ironic but I don't see this as the cause of distrust towards H1B visas. The issue seems to be a case of confusing H1B (talent - needed) temprorary work visas with opening a door for outsourcing. While it's true that IT outsourcing firms have perfected the technique of bringing offsore personnel to the HQ for on the job training, it's still far from the norm. Kudos to the author for sharing his experience.

  17. Thoughts in response on Microsoft Takes on TiVo · · Score: 4, Insightful

Tivo's stock price has dropped 4% from yesterday's close on the announcement and over 6% from earlier this week... People are in a state of panic and for good reason. TiVo has been building up their Tivo to go services and working out rights management details with the NFL and other interested parties. They're also rumored to be including full Netflix movie download services in their next box. Tivo has been network agnostic while the MS box is geared towards comcast customers. This gives MS both a leg up and a problem. The advantage is in being able to offer specific PPV/pay per download movie choices while keeping it under the cable company's control may be a weakness. Also note that this is one cable company taking on the new box. Unless we start hearing that these boxes are also broadband web browsers and offer new features bundled in with comcast's cable modem or that other cable companies are joining on, Tivo is in good shape. They still have DirectTv and retail space that MS would have a while to catch up in. My final thought is Microsoft's trump card. If they somehow manage to integrate control of the set top box into the OS (do I smell anti trust case?) they could very well be able to kill off Tivo.
