    The ideas of social darwinism used by the Nazis were not founded in science. They
    were not based on Darwins ideas and Darwin would have rolled over in his grave had
    he heard of such perversion of his work. Pro-science != (killing Jews|killing
    blacks|aryan supremacy).

    The idea of evolution of species does not validate racism. In fact all races are the
    same species. Should we kill people with genetic imperfections? That is not evolution
    or natural selection, but artificial selection and simply immoral. I actually want to
    see the candidates' position on Creationism and I did not see it in TFA. I know Ron Paul
    has refused to answer the question on whether or not he believes in evolution or the
    flying spagetti monster.

    I don't know about the systems in Europe, but decent University libraries in the states let you do a lot of ILL (interlibrary loan). You can get whatever book, video, media you want as long as another library in the system has it. What a great resource!

    Perhaps predator avoidance is one of the purposes of sleep. However, animals which in nature generally have no predators like for instance a pride of lions (the group not a single lion) still sleep. Also after having seen my puppy try to devour a nest of sleeping mice he dug
    up, I'm not so sure sleep offers much of a predator avoidance advantage at all...

    Jokes aside, rather than replace sleep with a snortable drug, a useful advantage for me would
    be able to replace non REM sleep with a period of sleep-eating, like a horse. That would save time during the day that I spend chewing and I'd be able to still gain the benefits of sleep. Also if I was asleep, hopefully I could trick myself into eating healthier foods :)

    It's all very clear if you look at the laws of hypercausality, quantum-doomliness and pay
    attention to your multiplicands and not just that showboating globetrotter math.
    If you are concerned about which double is the duplicate, simply slap a doom-o-meter on them
    and you will know which is the dupe and which is the original!

    Actually I type apt-get install skype, and I've got skype :)

    They also distribute .DEB files from their website.

    Debian based distro's can also make use of something called automatix2 (http://www.getautomatix.com/) which can be used to install Windows apps (via CodeWeavers) even. I would not necessarily recommend it, but it is certainly something for Joe-user and
    Michael Dell uses it too :)

    Hmm I can't seem to recall that part of the Quran talking about how Mohammed was a mysogynistic bastard who raped 5 year olds. When you make wild claims, isn't it a good idea to cite a source?

    I wonder if I'd get modded +5 for writing about why I think Christianity is bullshit, that Mary was no virgin but a slut, and since she never admitted it
    her son grew up with a complex, and he certainly never wrote any testaments. That was all "supposedly" written by people who claimed to know him, but we have very little historical proof of that. We do have proof of this guy named Paul who likely had his own agenda.

    I personally do not buy into any of the major religion, but I try to respect the beliefs of others. Now I am not saying that fanatic Muslim idealogues should be embraced, but there are many people who practice Islam but believe in common sense. Is it equally acceptable to equate all of Christianity with killing gay people, blowing up the offices of abortion doctors and bombing mosques??

    As far as TFA is concerned, it may very well be true that less scientific journals
    are coming out of the middle east. In part it could be because the one country which allowed women to go to school and work (Iraq) has a university system

    But really, how many peer reviewed scientific journals came out of the vatican?

    I'd wager no small amount that there are some talented geophysicists in the middle east figureing out how to extract more oil tp feed volkswagens all over the world.

    someone please mod parent up. This Lu Feng sounds like a real hero risking himself to stand against an oppressive corporation and corrupt bureaucracy for what ? Not for a huge cash settlement (face it $180 is nothing to microsoft) but for an apology and for an uninstall program. I didn't know /. was this international, but I say let /.ers help those who pursue justice in any country!

    I have to admit that Midnight Commander was one of the programs that encouraged
    me to switch to Linux. With its Turbo-Pascal/Norton Commander like color scheme, it
    brought a level of comfort to this ex-DOS user. I must give credit Miguel for that. Even if
    it was many years ago, it was a great contribution. I still use midnight commander today!

    As far as Moonlight and OOXML go. I think that Miguel is entitled to opt to use this software and develop for it (if Microsoft allows him) and have Novell-Microsoft grant rights to use Microsoft stuff (which they can revoke at anytime). However, I don't think we want it in our non Novell/Microsoft Linux distros (ODF please)! I will never willingly extend myself into Microsofts embrace.

    another unfortunate thing about alzheimers is it could often
    be misdiagnosed. Since we don't test for CJD in this country,
    we will never know :(

    I wonder if the occurence of Alzheimer's is lower in countries that
    do test (like England).

    I agree with you completely! Every time I wanted to watch Futurama it was preempted by a football game. Eventually, the best
    storytelling of our time was supplanted by King of the Hill. Honestly I'd rather have my splanctic ganglion tickled by mechanical midgets than watch that. Maybe I am weak and womanly like Kif, but the one about ressurecting Fry's dolemite-fast-fossilized dog actually made me cry.

    Spammers pay real money for botnets/phishing websites etc, but their return is higher
    than their expenses so they continue to plague us. Our spamfiltering solutions may
    diminish their return, but apparently not enough.

    One interesting approach (from MIT Spam Conference) was these guys (SPAMALOT), who basically interact with the spammer as much as possible.

    I really think its a good idea. If a spammer is trying to get a credit card, give them 50000 phonies. Imagine what would happen to spammers if everyone responded to all their spam? The only probem I see is it might make it easy for malicious people to DOS real web stores, by sending out spam for those stores.

    Any other ideas?

    Alexander Wolfe has been writing anti-linux fud for sometime. He has no technical qualifications at all. From TFA talking about kernel forking:

    I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't know my kernel had any shell at all let alone a shell "to support real time and load balancing"...

    One vendor in particular (namely Falconstor), have modified the code of Samba, distributed binaries to us (we were their unhappy customers), and *REFUSED* to provide source code to their changes. We are no longer a Falconstor customer and no longer want to see what changes they made to our smbd. But what can/is/should be done about GPL-violating vendors?

    that sucks! I love diesel engines because they can burn biodiesel or be rigged to burn straight-vegetable-oil! Are you sure about this diesel ban? My 2000 Jetta TDI qualifies as a ULEV, and the last time I visited the dealership (in Connecticut), they were selling the 2006 model. A 40 mpg gasoline Smart certainly is not a big win for US consumers or the environment.

    The CDI (diesel Smartcar) gets nearly 80 mpg. I certainly hope it is available in the US.

    I agree! Well Cygwin is not that hard to setup, adding/removing/updating packages should be as easy as using the commandline. Also is there any chance WinLibre or Cygwin will ever run on Vista?
