MS has everyone honed in on the wrong intent here. Sure, they are gobbling up smaller distros but, it's GOOGLE they are after. They are clear with the intent of making Microsoft Search the default for thses distros. They want to gain ground on GOOGLE. If I'm GOOGLE I unload a full office suite online (they are sooo close). Then........drum roll..........GoogleLinux. They won't budge an inch for MS and have the clout. Bundle GoogleLinux with new PC's with a ton of pre-loaded apps and the full GOOGLE Office Online. Ballmer then begins to morph into the final and complete spawn of Young Frankenstein.

I have tried SUSE countless times. DL'ed the last Live DVD and same problem.....it will not boot! No command line..doesn't get to that point. I know others have had problems with SUSE's distro doing the same thing. Have they fixed this problem on latest Live DVD? P1.7/512/ATI Radeon 9600 AIW

I work on the side helping with support and this has been something going on for almost a year now. I work with elderly folks a lot and they really are the ones suffering here. They got a PC to keep in touch with their kids/grandkids/etc; and they are in tears over the frustration.

I got a Mac G5 this past May in addition to my PC at home. I get to USE the Mac whereas the PC is like my first car. I am under the hood all the time when I'd rather be driving!

I've since been encouraging these elderly folks to get a Mac. Several have and they are now enjoying computing the way it should be for them. I can't begin to describe the breath of fresh air a Mac is to them. Bill Gates should see what elderly people are going through and more importantly, what a bad first experience for someone wanting to embrace computing it is for them. They are the ones victimized and sadly, not mentioned.

I used to defend MS. I would just say PC users are smarter. Guess what? You'd have to be stupid to use a PC ( with Windows that is ). I've gotten one 82 YO lady to use BeatrIX's Live Linux Distro on her 5 YO laptop and she is thrilled. No lie.

MS is beginning to unravel. Macs are better. Period. I'll keep my PC until it dies but, am getting a Powerbook next and then a couple of Mac Mini's for my kids. Screw MS...there...I said it....finally!

Maybe Jobs doesn't want us to watch the feigned "surprise" of the audience as he unwraps the new sub-$500 Mac? Does the audience get prompts?

Really....how about an edited version of this so we can just see the "nosedive"??!! Surely somebody has an Apple or Linux box to accomplish this right?

Hey....anyone getting Linux out there gets a nod by me. I say kudos to HP for doing this.

I've been wanting Linux to be a replacement for Windows for some time. I started with Mandrake 7.2 and have tried just about every distro since. Debian has been great but, it simply WILL NOT work with my soundcard. In fact, my Live card seems to give Linux fits as NO distro works with it. Speaking as one who views recompiling the kernel akin to physics I just don't have the time.

Linux has been heralded as the next big thing for a long time now but, there is no denying the incremental changes are just little, barely noticeable chnages. While "apt get" is indeed an improvement, let face it, it should be easier.

Don't flame me OK? I love Linux and currently have MEPIS as part of my dual boot. Hey, I am making a go of it and trying. I always have. However, what Linux users consider a big change doesn't mean beans to a newbie Linux user. I had my mom use Knoppix and told her to give it a go. She tried it for a week and said "for web and email it's fine but, other than that, what's the big deal?" She has a point. Having said that, I am building a box with spare parts and installing Linspire for my "kids only" system in the den. My kids ( 15, 9 and 5 ) have tried it and it does then things they need. Actually a pretty good distro I think. For it's intended target.

I'm just concerned that when Linux FINALLY becomes a REAL and viable alternative ( ie; much more user friendly ) it will be the year 2012. Linux has yet to get over the hump IMO. I'll keep up trying to figure this OS out in the meantime. I think it's worth the trouble personally. It's all good. But, I keep waiting for THE distro.
