...lines of code too, I bet. This is a "master of the obvious" type of article and it frustrates me.

Perhaps the interesting comment isn't that there will be anti-piracy measures, but how the anti-piracy measures will be deployed. To point, what is the technology behind this statement: The company also said it has added more sophisticated technology for monitoring whether a system is pirated.

"If you're a pirate, we're not going to give you all the functionality!" Um, OK. This isn't really news.

  3. Wikipedia War Wiki Failure on Wikipedia Wars -- Lake Express Ferry · · Score: 4, Insightful

I like Jason Scott's rant about Wikipedia over at ASCII. It is related to this next Wikipedia War in the following way:

"It's that there's a small set of content generators, a massive amount of wonks and twiddlers, and then a heaping amount of procedural whackjobs. And the mass of twiddlers and procedural whackjobs means that the content generators stop being so and have to become content defenders. Woe be that your take on things is off from the majority."

A related issue is that with some topics, you will *always* have debates. Certain wiki topics will always cause people to be at "war" with each other. I doubt this will kill off wiki technology, but eventually there probably will be some social conventions to handle disputes. Or, perhaps a more rigid technology will take the place of wikis. Who knows.

Sorry to ramble. My point is just that we need to be careful that we don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. In plain language, a wiki war doesn't mean that wikis are bad.

  4. "How" is Largely Irrelevant. on Holographic Storage a Reality in 2006? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Personally, I don't care how my data is stored. It can be holographic, electromagnetic, or paper-click-o-matic. I care about how much I can store. I want it secure and I want it instantly available. Getting excited about "holographic" is pretty much a waste of time. Just tell me how much I can store, tell me how it can be (easily) set up and secured, and how much it is going to cost. After that, I'm just hearing 01010100101010. No thanks.

By the way, I recently found out about the Data Storage Industry Wiki. From a business perspective, this is pretty cool. They talk about trends and big picture stuff, and there are many good links to useful resources and smart people. Good stuff; relevant.

Is Google doing this as managed innovation or is Google throwing "it" against the wall to see what sticks?

  9. Only once piece of the picture... on Google Music Store Inches Closer? · · Score: 2, Interesting

How does the music store interact with players, especially the iPod?

Can users easily manage their music libraries?

What kind of file formats will be available?

Overall, the article makes it sound like Google is very focused on the music industry. I understand this to a point, but Google's users won't be too happy if the music industry seems like it is in too much control. Users are willing to pay, but they expect a certain level of freedom and choice. The user experience is at least as crucial as buy in from the music industry. Or, in other words, Google needs to consider both supply and demand.

Feel free to explain why. My point of the "survey" is that I think people trust Google less now than in the past. It is taking more and more effort for Google to keep the hearts and minds of the world. There is more speculation. There are more conspiracy theories.

I had Digg open at the same time as Slashdot, went to my Diig profile, grabbed the link, then came back here and quickly slapped the post together. (Note: First post.) By the time I realized what happened, it was too late.

Mea culpa. And yes, I feel the (current) -1 Offtopic is deserved.

Sidebar: "Papers must be formatted using the provided LaTeX template" This seems a bit old skool to me. I've been out of the academic loop for a few years now, but is this standard now? Even for a Linux Love Fest this seems like a bit of a constraint...
