IF survival of the fittest was true (evolution) then why is there such a biodiversity? Why are there symbioses between stronger creatures and smaller while the stronger do not necessarily need the other creature and can better eat it?
In Europe Microsoft has different contracts with businesses preventing them from using other software. For instance: to become some kind a MS-partner you have to have at least 30% of your staff and 50% of your sales people have some kind of MS Certification. The total share of your servers/clients that has to be Windows 70%. Next to that, if a MCS... can convince management to replace a Linux server by a Windows server they can get a bonus from MS up to 1000 Euro/server.
IF you can or will not comply your company will have to pay all licenses in full until 2 years back
To the people that don't believe me: I worked in such a company with such a contract. I told one of the customers that Microsoft wasn't his best choice for the technical needs he had (big customer, lots of servers) and I almost got fired because some big shot from Microsoft got to hear about it and demanded my release or they would revoke the license advantages. If you complain to the authorities same Bad Things(tm) will happen
They sue some single mothers, poor people on the rim of society and what do they do: They sue the pants out of them. Why I'll explain you
They do not have good lawyers and so or cannot affor d them. So, what happens is that RIAA does have precedence in court that they have ruled for RIAA so they can sue the middle-rich people too much easier.

Is that even allowed by US Gov. to export that to other countries? I thought that there was a limit of encryption and everything above...bits was banned from exporting (remembering 56-bits encryption Windows NT).
"the biggest test will be whether it can demonstrate the necessary performance and security to function as a data centre server for mission-critical applications"
Well, it DID test it's performance and security as a server for mission critical application.
I wonder when Microsoft will reach that level. The fact that Microsoft actually has to copy source code from other (Open Source) projects to maintain a stable networking says all.
For the users that don't know: Gartner is a Microsoft-funded marketing "research" facility that has sent out FUD-investigations before.
We do it with a bunch of Postfix servers and MySQL. The MySQL is going to be clustered soon but currently runs separate on each server.
Each server has MySQL and Postfix and generates statistics.
Currently the most heavily loaded machine (10000 mail accounts) eats about 1-5% of CPU (Single Xeon with 3x72G SCSI RAID5).
We estimated you can push about 100000 accounts/server given enough disk space (we are planning to put it on Apple SAN-solution) and separating the MySQL database. There are about 10 mails/sec. passing through the server (IN/OUT).
An environment with 1000-2000 exchange e-mailaccounts takes up 2 dual proc. servers for the frontend and 2 single proc. servers for the backend (storage) needs migrated to a 70000$ storage solution because the current gives not enough throughput. The problem is that each times a secretary opens a calendar (eg. to schedule an appointment with the managment) all those mailboxes, schedules, calendars, notes are opened, searched through and synced (takes about 2000MB of datatransfer in a few seconds) while the IMAP protocol doesn't do that and provides the same functionalities.
Well, if you would take a job from M$ you WOULD go to hell.
I think Microsoft is right over its top. Just as with other company's (eg. AT&T, IBM, AOL...)they had their moment of fast rising, fame and money, they will stay pretty big but have to cut in costs, get rid of some departments and start looking for long-term investments and get lost on the home-market.
Proof for this "prediction":
They are including more and more services so they can interoperate with other systems (Unix Services)
People leave for other company's (like Google)
They start cutting on people and moving to other places (like this post states)
They start pushing off some applications into the opensource fields
They get more and more critique and are not the all-holy one anymore not only by geeks but also by big media and also internally
They try grabbing pieces of market they are not active in and they can't quite push it through (Games, mobile)
DRM is not meant for preventing copies:
Digital Rights Management:
Digital means it is with 0 and 1's (duuh)
Rights Management means that it is used to control the rights over the digital data. You have the right to have your music, book, whatever for x-number of days. After that it expires (as if you should return a book but without the late fees).
Nothing (except for the copyright laws and American DMCA) prevents you from copying your rented data. DRM is for renting, not for buying.
If you have "bought" the data (CD, DVD,...) and it has DRM then you have full rights to do as you want to remove DRM, copy etc. You buy the data as soon as you have an agreement with the person who sells it that it is not being rented out! They cannot come after you stating DMCA or whatever law as you bought the data and with your own products you are allowed to do what you want.
If you buy M$ Windows, you rent their CD and pay for the license (as stated by the EULA). The problem with the EULA is that it is in most (European) countries legally not binding (I don't know about America). So if I buy M$ Windows and I have a receipt stating that I bought Windows, I am allowed to get it out of its box and decrypt / crack / reverse-engineer anything on it because I have never seen the EULA before I bought it (I do not want to see the EULA because then I would be installing it on my computer) so legally I am allowed to do whatever I want to it, I have not signed a contract nor ever seen and signed the EULA.
According to M$ you legally rent M$ Windows or M$ Office and a license to use it for a year or whatever amount of time. They have full right to come to your door and ask the CD back from you. They will not do that as that would break the contract and have to pay/reimburse the price for contract-breaking. If you do not do that, then they will send an army of lawyers and sue you until you have no money anymore for your own defense but legally they have no right to say you you cannot do with your software whatever you want.
PPC is one of the best platforms ever for both sound, gfx and of course heat production.
It is also more efficient as it is a full RISC processor instead of the Intel's who are hybrid CISC and RISC: The core, the base level, is a fast RISC processor. On top of that is an interpreter which 'sees' the CISC instructions, and breaks them down into simpler RISC instructions.
So, why should you switch to a b0rked platform which is ages old so it can still support DOS and has the power usage and heat production of a small oven (especially in datacenters)?
As long as Apple provides PPC I will buy their PPC or buy other PPC machines.
That is the package you will buy to run Linux (LiveCD) on and you will put your own 500G HD in it and connect your ethernet with a wireless USB adaptor!
Microsoft thinks about us, hackers that want to run Linux on XBox
Then you have bad admins. A (good) network or system administrator has to know at all times what is on the network and investigate where the bottlenecks and other problems are.
If you do not know that, then you are indeed in big trouble (or you have Windows administrators which do indeed not know what is running on their Wintendo). Then you should not consider what systems you are going to switch to, you have to consider what people you are going to switch to.
CP/M does not belong in the HISTORY of computers. Your very own Windows Vista runs CP/M under the shell.
Do those things (computer virusses, worms and BSD-based OS'es) still exist?
All Linux users

Simple:
A computer is like a cat (uncontrollable) if it runs M$ Windows
A computer is like a dog (it does do what you want it to do) if it runs Linux
The RIAA should su e Microsoft.

with Linux being used primarily for WebSphere and infrastructure applications on mainframes and web services on blades and racks.
So Linux will be primarily used for
-WebSphere
-Infrastructure Applications
-Mainframes
-Webservices
-In blades
-In racks
Sounds about all applications in a datacenter: way to go!
