I am currently looking for a job (if you know someone -> evi@valerieandevi.be) and freelancing on the side. Tomorrow will be a great day for me... all of a sudden hundreds of company's begging me to come in to fix them and restore the backups they don't have.
NO I DIDN'T CREATE THE VIRII [sic] but I can think wishfully can't I?
1) Vista doesn't come with Internet Exploder, Outlook nor ActiveX so it is as safe an os as RedHat Linux 5.
2) Their online "backup" will make sure that you can restore all your data every week (since you need to reinstall it)
3) All your data is belong to them and stored online (in their so-called backup system). Because of that you can leave the Operating System Suite with Browser, E-Mail and other crap (tm) read-only so those pesky virusses and teenage crackers are out every time you reboot!!
If so, how do you Slashdot readers keep up with your continuing education, while still maintaining a personal life? Is it naive to try to leave my work at work?"
Welcome to Slashdot darling,
1:/. is our daily education, so is Goatse
2: We don't have a personal life, we are nerds sitting in front of our computers in the basement of our parents all day
3: We don't have a job, we are nerds remember. The lucky ones under us who have a job usually live in the nearest datacenter.
Serious now: I understand you, I am Male but I had the same issues. I have a wife (which is very uncommon for a/.-er to even have a girlfriend) and she wants me home too. The coming of offspring of course brings the usual tension when you are constantly on a 24/7 standby. So no leaving work at work for me.
The solution: Quit your job and find something less stressful (not IT-manager, sys- or netadmin). GOOD sys- and netadmins on all levels are hard to find and expensive, that's why they have only one of us in every company doing the amount of work that the managment-level needs 10 people and 15 secretary's for. Next to that, IT is the most under-budgetted part of any company while sales is over-budgetted and still doesn't get it right nor done.
I used to work in an environment like yours and I had to quit before my health was totally ruined. Once you start to fall asleep on bus/train in the morning AND the evening on a 15 minute trip and thereby overshoot your location, once your partner complains that you fall asleep right after dinner or that you start dreaming (I literally started dreaming this) that your boss calls you again at 3am because the world comes to an end in his eyes because a single disk in a RAID5 array fails THEN you have to do something about it.
My solution: I went to my manager(s) and told them that we needed at least 2 extra persons or I would quit. They got 1 someone who didn't have a clue but still tried to play boss and then I quit and moved far, far away.
Do you really think that real child pornographers are going to look for things through Google without any kind of redirection?
What do they think, that we criminals are stupid? Anyone heard of proxies, remembering/bookmarking URL's, non-USA search engines?
This is really a stupid thing going on. This government and laws passing in the "great" United States of America makes me remember of the witchhunt for "communists" about 50y ago. It's happening all over again but now you just have to accuse that neighbour you don't like of filesharing, terrorism or kiddie-porn-searches. And anyone remembers those commies from half a decade ago? No, media, government and agency's are all trying to cover it up as if it never happened or that 'it wasn't that bad'.
Now the (NSA/FBI/CIA/Insert favorite American spook agency here) is going to know what you're eating and how hot it is so they don't burn themselves when they come in your house through the kitchen windows. Or they will know what exactly they have to poison in your local grocery store to kill you specifically.
Or your (neighbours/parents/mother-in-law) can come in and ask if they can join you for your famous meatloaf without even asking them!
Where do I sign up, I live upstate New York and I need a windmill to help power my own datacenter and my storage with pr0n and 3000$ would be a nice extra (given that some people here earn only 15000$/year.
Why another alternative for.NET? We already have LOGO, Pascal and Basic.
Of course if you want to become more advanced than.NET, you could start using Cobol or Fortran
If you want to outsmart.NET developers, learn PHP, Python or Perl
If you want to outsmart AND build faster/better/less buggy/stable software with datacenter/airfare/military specs you should get to start on C, C++ or Java.
Wasn't HD-DVD going to use guess what....NET for DRM protection while Blu-Ray was going to use the original Java? Figures...
That, ladies and gentlemen is why real geeks/slashdotters DON'T use Microsoft software - it crashes/doesn't work/bsod's/insert favorite type of MS-related malfunction here - on the most important moments.
This is actually media coverage about something very small to distract the media and common users from the real point and what is actually happening around us (the scandals around the wiretapping for example... what do you mean already forgotten???)
Linus Torvalds has a wife and 2 kids - He is a geek AND gets laid. I am a geek too and I got laid too at least twice a day while working a full time job and constructing PHP classes in my free time (check my website for my latest DCOP class for PHP).
Don't if you want to keep it down. If you really want someone interested in your e-mails then don't encrypt. While it might hide it from script-kiddies, hacker networks and especially government-based people have enough power and knowledge to crack your key.
For example: Someone finds a problem in MD5, RSA or whatever; don't you think the NSA or similar organisations in other nations have scholars who are searching for that EVERY SINGLE DAY. Heck, when something like it is found, it is shared among other intelligence agency's from other country's (enemies and allies) in both ways.
Hacker communities have enough power to crack an 1024-bit key in a few hours. I worked in a datacenter not too long ago and because of the careless security admins all Windows PC's were at one time infected by some kind of virus/trojan and we didn't notice until all processors were firing up at 100% CPU. Imagine this small datacenter (300 Pentium4 & 100 Dual Xeon's) multiplied by the number of datacenter with similar security issues.
My VIA Epia runs on an external power supply without any fans. IF you already got your computer (I did this and it worked):
Buy a cheap power supply with enough wattage eg. if you have 1 or 2 drives and an underclocked system then I think an el-cheapo 500W power supply will do (30 of 40$). Open it up and disconnect the fan:-).
I do recommend however testing that out (by blocking the fan with a pen) and if it breaks you can always return it as to see if it doesn't explode after running a few hours at maximum power usage.
I do not guarantee that you will have your warranty or anything else (personal damage etc. etc. - read someones disclaimer) but I did it that way and the method is released under the GPL so don't patent it.
FTFA: this creates the illusion of watching a 105 inch screen from a distance of 12 feet I don't really want to pay $600 to watch an illusion.
And it wouldn't be great to watch a 105 inch screen at 640x480 anyway (I don't think you could fit more on a 1-inch-screen (look at your digital camera, it's 3 inch and has merely a resolution of 320x240.
And wouldn't it be tiring to look constantly at a screen with one eye, 1 inch away while your other eye is looking between 1-50ft further.
From the manual: if you experience problems with this device do not look into the screen with remaining eye.
Luckily I don't run Windows on my laptop but it's 2 years old (1800 MHz AMD Athlon Mobile processor) and the DVD-combo drive never complained if I played my japanese anime movies, my european movies and since I moved to the states I have been playing US movies. No region codes are involved, I thought that region codes were deprecated as of 2000 (I have an old drive that does it but all the new ones (even brand new) don't complain). Or maybe it's just because I'm running Linux on all my machines but WTF?
Really, what is information overload? Do you get so much information you start forgetting the stuff you just got? Is your brain getting hotter or does it shut down? I don't think so. Information overload is what you make yourself for it. I read different newssites (slashdot and other) every day multiple times a day, follow up on forums etc. I don't think I get too much information because I don't want the extra information and I filter it out. Maybe some people have problems with filtering the stuff they don't want to read/see/hear but that's their problem and you can get that online, at school or anywhere else. Information overload is according to me just another buzzword to keep scholars and professors who don't have anything else to do busy and off course they make money out of it etc. etc.
Microsoft said in it's late night response on new years day that a patch is being made, the flaw is not critical since no-one actually uses WMF and the rest who do use them never should surf to porn and warez sites anyway. A patch will be available in Windows Shoehorn.
Team PI have done it again! YES YOU CAN BURN THIS ISO AND PLAY IT IN YOUR XBOX-360 - they call it the big m$ muck up. Microsoft left us with this blanket statement:
Xbox 360 retail kiosks have started arriving at retailers. Due to the nature of the distribution process, not all kiosks are hitting simultaneously, but are continuing to pop up in retailers across the country in the coming weeks.
The kiosks are designed for a retail environment and feature game samples, game trailers and product information. Team Pi leaves you with this Pillow statement:

also notes that the all datafiles on this disc isn't signed in

Playable (hackable) games on this disc: Call of Duty 2, Hexic, Kameo, King Kong. Also includes lots of game and accessory demos in video format.
Nothing ripped, just foreign videos were downsampled to fit onto a normal DVDR5!
YES you can run this! Burn the iso, put it into your xbox and be very amazed... Next, think of the posibilities of hacking this little demo disc that we might start running code on the retail xbox 360's !:)
So the second task is done. We hope this encourages all hackers, coders and crackers out there to take up the challenge. Enjoy!

Well. That is because of the contracts running with Microsoft. We have a contract (as hostingprovider) that x-% of the servers has to be Windows based so we recompiled Apache to show up as IIS and the next month Netcraft confirmed it, we moved 15000 sites (URL-forwarding) to IIS.
I have once been on one of those online trading sites (like e-bay) and someone offered a single new laptop for about 700 USD. It seemed nice enough, still in the box and the price was very good. I suspected something about the price but replied anyway. The dude said he was selling it because he was a yuppie from the UK and he ordered the wrong product but couldn't get refunded. I myself am from another EU-state so it had to be shipped over. He told me he was going to use this and this shipping company with 3-way system (escrow service) and take all the costs on him.
The site seemed legit, even had some sort of certificate of a known site for e-commerce (it said on their site) but before I agreed I checked the "click here to certify" link which took me to another site saying the certificate was correct but not quite the site of the issuer. Checking the real site of the advertised certificate the site was not in their lists.
I contacted that certificate site to verify and they said there was no certificate issued for the site so they were going to do the necessary steps. I mailed the dude saying that I wanted to use another escrow service because the site was abusing the logo of certificate issuer and that I contacted authorities and never heard from him again, his e-mail doesn't exist anymore etc.
I was almost tricked into such scam and I understand that some are being scammed buying christmas gifts for their grandchildren. But some promises are indeed too great (like the nigerian scamming letters) and should trigger something inside any sane persons head that there is something fishy.
My advice to anyone with online business: if it looks, hears or smells fishy, then check everything being said and promised until the bottom!
