Sixteen here as well, and I actually made the "it's" mistake for years up until a few months ago. In fact, looking back on my old school papers, I can see that I made it frequently but was never corrected on it. It was only after it was pointed out to me by a non-native English speaker did I realize the mistake that I had been making. It would seem that even our English teachers are beginning to let slip the intricacies of our languages, settling instead on common use and enough to let you get by to college.

The school newsletters and our yearbook are notorious for containing spelling and grammar errors. I found no less than 3 mistakes on the first page of the yearbook, which is published by the school, and my father and I frequently find errors in the newsletters. If the establishments which are responsible for teaching us good English can't handle it themselves, it would seem that proper spelling and grammar are bound to slide into the gutter. Will the art of the English language be lost before future generations have even made it through schooling?

My best guess is that grandparent is attacking the governmental process ("democracy", if you will), rather than this particular case. Remember how our government was designed to be "for the people, by the people?" He's merely pointing out the inadequacies in the way things happen.

We* elect politicians because they tell us every single time that they'll be doing what we want while in office. Clearly, however, when bills like this are passed after so much opposition has been raised by the people, we have a problem with what we claim to be the greatest method of government on the planet. Why bother to vote for someone who's supposed to fight for the people he represents when they only end up fighting for what they can get the most in campaign dollars out of? Some of you may protest that we voted them in in the first place and therefore we should simply vote in better politicians, but this is, as far as I have seen, impossible. Find me enough politicians who are honest enough to stand up for the people they believe in and I'll endorse them, but until then we're stuck with liars and cheats who try and convince the people that they're working entirely for us.

    1) Says who?
Logic, do you need to know who said it in order to think about it more, or can you just accept it as a different viewpoint? What's the purpose of every other species on this planet? That's right, to evolve and reproduce, that's it. So at the base level, our purpose here is to further our species through evolution and to reproduce. Humans have vastly overcomplicated lives and created all of their own problems through things like wealth and reputation.

    2) How is writing code furthering the species?
Okay, think about it.. What runs on the computers on the space shuttles and probes? What runs on the computers at nuclear power stations? That's right, software! Now think of all the programs you use on a daily basis. Without them, you'd have to do everything by hand, which would take a huge chunk of time away from you actually doing something useful for the species/yourself/your family. Think about everything that you take for granted, it'll make your arguments better.

    3) thinking along this logic, what race of the species will survive: the one sharing its work with others or the one making $$$?
Unfortunately, there is no way to determine this, because humans are such idiots anyway that we even bother to pose this question. Why shouldn't every race survive? Everyone has something to contribute, humans are just assholes when it comes to accepting that we should all be united, so we don't allow it to happen. We created money, why do we need to base everything on it? I don't think "hey, I should clean up this piece of trash because somebody might see and give me a million dollars," I think "hey, I should clean up this trash because it helps out everybody." Take a moment and stop being so self-centric and realize that without everybody else you wouldn't be around, so show a little respect.

Though I do respect your opinion, I fail to see any logic in your reasoning.

Here's a quick hint: Read the bible figuratively, as an interpretation of yourself and what you go through, and it won't contradict itself. Perhaps that's why it's written this way? So we don't read it literally?

  21. Re:Bad. on Microsoft Abandons Gay Rights Bill · · Score: 1

Just because it "says so" in the bible doesn't mean that that is what it actually means. Have you ever tried reading the Bible literally (I'm assuming so, here)? You'll notice that if you take everything it says literally, it makes absolutely no sense, things are always contradicting themselves or don't make any logical sense to figuring anything out. The 10 commandments were broken before they even got off the mountain, so maybe we shouldn't take them, just like the rest of the book, as a literal interpretation as what is trying to be said. Perhaps, then, if you take the concept figuratively and apply it to yourself, then you may actually learn something about yourself.

I'm sure this will be an unpopular statement and will be modded as flamebait, but have you ever considered internalizing these sorts of things? If you're having such a reaction to this concept, take it inside and apply it to yourself, figure out why you're reacting, and maybe learn something about yourself you never knew. Everything that was written in the Bible happens within you on a daily basis (see, if we take it literally, it makes no sense, but if we take it figuratively and actually take the time to apply it, you begin to notice things). You have an image within you of every last character in the stories and of every last person you meet. When something pisses you off, it's trying to show you something. When you react, you're meant to learn something. This is more of a rant than anything else, but for God's sake, don't take the damn thing literally and stop with your discrimination, you and every other person (self-inclusive) on this planet are homosexual (figuratively, remember), so by criticizing them or calling them wrong, you're only insulting yourself.

I am really hoping that we don't have the entire story with this, but maybe organized religion really has become such a cult (M-W says: " A system or community of religious worship and ritual.") that they have this much influence over Microsoft. Bah, what a world we live in.
