I'm afraid that they'll insist this software runs on the TCM only, and that every personal computer has a properly operational TCM. Then if you've cracked your TCM, you'll be in much bigger trouble.

If that's what happens, there will be two types of people: those who don't understand or care so they decide to risk it, and those who do care so they just download copies that have been disguised to evade the ??AA software.

Like they're smart enough to create or have created software that would properly detect pirated files.
I think this is an interesting new level of anti-piracy measures they want to take, but I doubt it'll progress too far.

There always seem to be assumptions about how to interact with youth that make perfect sense to adults but result in nonsensical interaction with the children. On the rare occasion that the child tries to inform the adult of a false assumption or possible miscommunication, it's usually misinterpreted as the child not understanding the full picture, because they're a child.

I agree. They don't seem to have any idea what they're doing. The main reason I nearly abandoned theaters was due to signs everywhere at my local theater saying the reason ticket prices went up ~60% was to pay for construction (adding 6 auditoriums). I was only in 5th grade then, but already thought businesses were to expand via their own savings, or at least not admit to directly using customers to expand and make more money.

Then they finished construction but removed all those signs and kept the new ticket price. I think that was my first boycott :)

The real problem is that small and independent theaters are great but probably won't continue to exist in the same way if big chain theaters go under. At the very least, prices will go up significantly. I wouldn't be surprised if some stopped serving beer due to movie studio discounts for theaters who comply with happy, family friendly environments.

This and all the counter arguments should be summarized by Apple's old description of its customers; they "think different". Don't buy a PS3 simply for the sake of installing Linux on it.

I can't disagree, but I think it should be viewed as a gaming system. Installing Linux may be like the pre-alpha version of a PC's live disc, but it has the relatively new, obscure game with a cult-following - messing with 'nix on a console.

Installing Ed's Debian on my Xbox served no purpose, but it sounded like a good way to fill my afternoon. Lacking a keyboard, all interaction was done via SSH instead of using the controller's limited bash interactivity; so I did a classic ifdown eth0..oh wait..crap. Then it was pure puzzle, making the lock picking in more recent games feel like pipe dream.

You're presented with a screen's worth of command history and output, the ability to copy, paste, and an Enter key. All you have to do is find your option, or path(s) of options, accurately predicting the output to know how much backlog will be flushed. Difficulty modes are set via router configuration, e.g. disabling DHCP, blocking communication between certain class 3 subsets, etc.

Was there a point? I have no idea, but it's a great game :)

Either way, a quick google of "hdtv lag" leads to some additional causes of delay.

Considering some gamers, who know very little about technology, instantly notice lag when they try their new TV, whatever the delay is it's not quick enough.

  18. 120Hz is only good for video on Sony Announces PS3 Slim, Price Cut, Improvements To Home · · Score: 1

I agree 120Hz is great since it's a common product of frame rates, but the interpolation of any "good system" can be bad for games. The interpolation introduces lag because it delays the picture display while creating the artificial frames. That's bad for any interactive situation, but what's really bad is that some of these TV's don't give you the option to disable it.

I recently overheard somebody trying different types of video cables for his Xbox360 because there was lag on his new LCD. He had no idea it was the new TV causing the problem. And how many salespeople are knowledgeable enough to warn people?

-Make a new product custom-milled from a block of some cool metal!
-Name a boring industry number, say 1394, to something exciting that suggested its blazing speed!
-Call a standard media device Super to set it apart from others!

Gamers, the kind you're talking about, are just like any other group of people waiting to slurp up the latest marketing drivel. They think games are neat but aren't attentive enough to realize resolution and graphics power don't make a video game. Their interest is sparked by cool "new" things like WiiFit; they just don't realize the same thing was made for the Amiga in the 80's because games weren't "cool" then.
