I'm in the process of starting a business and came up with a great unique name (related to my last name). I did a search on the domain a while back to see if it was available but didn't register immediately. A few weeks later when I went to register, some prick had taken it and parked ads there. Surely someone had to have seen my search on that domain and took it with the hopes of extorting cash out of me.
I didn't give in, instead I waited a year for the domain to expire. That was in February 2007, and I checked shortly after it was supposed to expire and the squatter had renewed the registration! I gave up hope and didn't think much of it, then just today this Slashdot story got me thinking. I did a search and found that the name was available, so I jumped on my opportunity to register the.com and.net domains. Thanks Slashdot for making my day!
That's a nice car - too bad it (or any other compact diesel) isn't available in the USA. I'm still waiting for Toyota to give me a diesel Hilux. I need a small pickup and I love the torque the Hilux diesel has (drove one in the Philippines recently).
Instead Toyota decides to make the compact pickup in the USA (Tacoma) BIGGER - wider and longer, with similar fuel economy to the previous years' models.
I have a 9 mile commute to work. I would love to bike when the weather permits (more than 2/3 of the year - I don't mind cold but rain and snow are no fun) however the route is so bicycle unfriendly. Try sharing a narrow no shoulder 2 lane road with crazed NJ drivers going 50MPH on winding roads.
My favorite games are on old consoles. The only exceptions are "MX vs ATV Unleashed" and the Hockey games (2K Sports' s and EA's) - and for those, a PS2 is just fine.
I've discovered over the years that cars have a speed that they "like" to cruise at. They'll run a little easier, and give better gas mileage.
I found this magic number in my 03 Accord. When I drove it from L.A. to N.Y. a few years ago, I got 37MPG average for the entire trip. The car is only rated at 33MPG highway, but I consistently got 37MPG. That was all highway driving with the cruise control set at 75-80MPH (depending on speed limits) and the air conditioner on.
Just a few weeks ago I took a 450 mile all-highway trip and again I traveled the same speed all-highway and again got 37MPG.
You'll get a more favorable gear ratio, but the extra mass and increased friction from those oversized tires usually negates any benefit from a better gear ratio.
I used to engine brake all the time, however it might not be so good to do for a car you plan on keeping a long time. $20 for a set of front brake pads is much cheaper than new rings and a rebuilt head.
I can't say with 100% certainty that engine braking is bad to do, but then again I change my oil every 3000 miles instead of the 10,000 mile intervals that the manufacturer recommends.
Public transportation in NYC doesn't suck, but NYC sucks... Send me back to LA in my old apartment (which was $300/month cheaper) where I could walk to three grocery stores, several hundred restaurants, take a private commuter bus to work for $1.25, bike 5 minutes to the mountains, or walk 15 minutes to a very enjoyable beach.
My grandparents just got a new water heater which is amazing. You only heat the water you need, rather than keeping 150 gallons of water hot all the time. The exhaust temperature is only around 70 degrees!
I knew a guy who had a 1998 Camaro with a 6 speed manual. The car is rated at 27MPG highway, and he would regularly get this mileage and quite often even more. He installed a vacuum gauge on the A pillar which showed vacuum at the intake manifold, keeping him more aware of his driving habits.
I always wondered how "Nielsen Media Research" gets their TV viewership numbers in the USA. I can't seem to understand how telephone polls work - I can't speak for everyone, but I have too many other things I'd rather be doing than taking telephone surveys.
Aren't you safe as long as your previous employer doesn't find anything out?
I signed a nice NDA with my present employer and I'm learning a lot of things about my industry which would be very useful at several other companies. The way it was worded basically says I can't work in my industry, however it would be very difficult for them to find out exactly what I'm doing and it's very unlikely they would pursue any legal action unless I was directly working for a competitor (which currently there are no competitors).
I guess I got some of the old stuff. I'm still hesitant to try it again for my pistols because I can easily get Remington UMC or Winchester White Box for the same price. Dick's sporting goods (NY/PA) usually runs a special on the Remington UMC pistol ammo for $8.99/50 and Walmart always has Winchester value packs for $22.97/100.
The wolf rounds that did manage to fire smelled so horrible I thought my lungs were going to melt. Is that old soviet-era powder they're using? Does the new wolf ammo have non-corrosive primers at least?
I wouldn't imagine that a supplier would have a hard time keeping large supplies of Wolf ammo. Have you ever tried it? It's complete junk. I tried some Wolf 7.62x39 in my brother's SKS and four out of five rounds wouldn't fire. I threw in some Winchester (brass) and fired 100 rounds without a problem.
I've shot Wolf's pistol ammo in.40 and.45 and while I didn't have any failures to fire, the rounds wouldn't feed properly causing the slide to jam.
What about this crap called Militec-1 that I keep hearing about? I haven't tried it yet, but there are lots of people around the gun forums who rave about it.
In my experience, WD-40 gets gummy if you're not frequently using or cleaning something with it (not good for oiling/lubing prior to storage).
For some reason, paranoia seems to be cool among Web geeks, but for the most part, it is totally unwarranted unless you're sending and receiving sensitive data.
I'm not using Noscript because I'm paranoid. I ran into many sites that used Javascript to float ads over the entire page. Noscript puts me in control of the content I wish to view.
My laptop battery consistently lasts LONGER on flights than my co-workers who use Windows.
Perhaps it's the fact that you're a linux user and smart enough to disable the wireless card during the flight that's causing your battery to last longer...
How about K'NEX? They've been around for a while but unfortunately I never got to play with them. My five year old nephew saw them and seems very interested, so I might get a set for christmas (for the both of us to play with). The best part is they're made in the USA!

Cambodia's TLD is .kh and not .cm, that's Cameroon
I don't understand why anyone would cheat in the first place. What's the fun in winning a game that requires very little to no skill?

Slashdot has ads? :-)

If you have some free time, go read the history of Newark, NJ...
$20 says the Google massage doesn't include a 'happy ending'...

I'm looking forward to a Wiilly good Christmas this year!!!
