It's not because some moron minister says some bullshit that it is likely to go anywhere. I'm sure it'd be good to have some good games in French but the odds are that they'd be speaking some weird dialect from France that no French speaking person here in the USA or in Canada could understand. Any ban of English only games would create a huge black market. Most kids in Québec know enough english to play just about any American games and almost no one know the weird slang used in France.
The Québec prime minister is married to an American lady and I would be surprised if he'd want to deprive his kids of good American games.
It works for some and not for others. I have never been able to get Xconfigurator to give me an acceptable setting, something that would not give me a black screen or no sync.
Sax works for me.
As for sndconfig, same thing. I ended up buying the commercial sound driver.
sndconfig is only good for a handfull of sound cards and doesn't recognize a lot of sound cards.
I think it was more stupidity than incompetance. To be honest you should put the blame on Shockwave and RealAudio who don't have working Linux versions yet. At Shockwave's site the plugins for Linux don't work. I had the plugin 3.0 and upgrade to 4.0 with no changes. As for RealAudio they say that we should have a working G2 version by the end of the millenium or early next millenium.
I am curious to know if the version sold by Corel blows the partition table as well as the iso version released on the net.
I don't know if it does it on all the large hard disk but I know of at least the 8.4G from WD (1027 cylinders in LBA) as well as the 14G from IBM.
I had to recreated a blank partition table using fdisk on SuSE CD and reinstall everything. It is lucky that I had backed up my valuable data.
I wrote to Corel about it and they have never responded.
I find it very irresponsible to release such a trojan horse and rather amusing that CNET makes asses of themselves by listing this trash as the best distribution.
If you want a good distribution look at SuSE 6.3. Take note that the graphic install is buggy but the good old yast works and doesn't crash as the graphic install does when you want to put lilo on the root of the partition instead of the MBR, the moron team of that graphic install might be related to that of Corel's team. Aside from that SuSE 6.3 is great.
They are on the net, accessible in the US in case that you wouldn't know.
The FCC does prohibit us from receiving Canadian TV except what we could get off the air.
I think it has a lot to do with getting back at Canadian cable TV who steals signals from the USA and black out the US commercials to put canadian commercials.
The internet may force the two groups of morons in Ottawa and Washington to remove the stupid border in the TV industry.
I'm sure those folks don't give a rat's ass as to whether or not we watch their TV. The problems they have are the mother fuckers in Ottawa and Washington who can't get to an agreement on US and Canadian culture content.
The CRTC and FCC prohibits us from watching each other's TV.
I asked a few days ago to dish if they plan on providing us the French lineup of ExpressVU and I was told that the FCC prohibits them from doing so. They would love to sell me the service but they can't legally do it. You can still subscribe to expressvu if you have an address in Canada and are billed there but if they ever find out that you actually live in the US they cut you off. Not that they would not want to sell you the service but because the governments forbid it.
In this case, the arguments about the local stations don't hold water as there are no French language stations in the USA.
Dish would provide me with one French station (TV5, international TV) for the price of all of the Canadian French language network at expressvu.
I hope this graphic install isn't as buggy as that of Corel. Hopefully I can have a normal install, I sure hell don't want to be stuck in a graphic boot as is plagued Corel Linux.
Under Corel the loading of the graphic kdm was done after the boot at level 2. Normally you switch to level 2 to get the system back to sanity but Corel forced the graphic boot even under level 2.
Removing the offending kdm script fixed the bug but it was quite annoying to have to look for the solution to the graphic boot.
You seem to know very little about world trade. Free trade in the world guarantee that the best products are produced at a competitive price. Each country makes the products that they're best at.
Contrary to what you think we get a good income and good living conditions in the US, the best country in the world. To think the contrary is a symptom of stupidity and ignorance.
We in the US as well as most countries in the world benefit from a free market place.
The criminals in Seatle are for the most part unions brainless jerks, basket weaving university graduates and other morons. Hopefully they will get what they deserve. Free speech doesn't mean that you are allowed to destroy other people's property.
You fail to read the text and just went by the title so you could easily qualify in the category that you try to imply that I categorize kids.
Have you read a bit you would have realized that my critic was at Corel and not at the kids.
If my son trashes the computer he will awould get it him trouble. Installing Corel Linux trashes the computer, isn't that clear enough?
I was being sarcastic about the age restriction. Restricting downloads to lower than 18 isn't something people should be concerned. How the heck can they enforce this? As usual the crowd on slashdot went bunkers.
Considering that an install of Corel Linux is very likely to blow your partition table unless you have nothing else on the drive, this could protect the kid's safety. How do you think a pissed off father will react after the kid destroys all his data and has no idea how to recover those data?
Actually they should restrict the download to people who use winblows only.
I installed Corel Linux on a 14G hard disk. It refused to install on a freshly formated partition and I, in a stupid move let it remove that partition and recreate it. It messed up by a few cylinders and ended up making my hard disk impossible to be seen by Partition magic or fdisk from winblows. OS/2 could see the other partition but couldn't do anything with the hard disk because the partition had been blown. If I had installed on a logical partition it is very likely that I would have had to reinstall SuSE without the benefit of saving my data first.
I ended having to reinstall everything. Luckily I was still able to boot SuSE with a diskette and could see all the data from there. SuSE fdisk would tell me that someone messed the partition table and was unable to do much with it. I backed up everything and recreated a clean partition table. A complete repartitioning and reinstall was done on the 14G hard disk.
Privacy? This is a serial number. People need to wake up to reality. I've always put identificationnumbers in all the products I've made so I could have an idea as to what problem I might have when a customer bitches.
I'm sure Intel's interest is similar. Look at the overclocking issue for instance, this serial numbering scheme is a dream come true. You now can see if you're getting screwed or not.
As to people using this to classify you during installation of whatever is another issue. If the processor's serial number wasn't used, something else would be.
The only ones who should really be concerned would be the ones using stolen software installed under an OS who uses the serial number to track the criminals. I think those methods could be destroyed in a court challenge since entrapment is not admissible and you need a search warrant if you suspect someone of stealing from you.
Honesty will guarantee that you will not get into trouble no matter what kind of shit Microsoft or any other morons put in the PCs.
Actually it is kind of nice. This is the first install ever of Linux which identify all my hardware correctly. The graphic is beautiful, it actually looks just as good as the one on winblows.
There are a few things though that I didn't appreciate in the install.
1-The fdisk that they use. I had preformatted partitions to use and I had to remove the partitions to get it to accept (anti moron mode I guess). It turns out that I had to back up because it would have changed /dev/hdb5 logical to/dev/hdb3 primary, it would then have been a challenge to boot back on SuSE 6.2 considering that fstab would no longer match as all the partitions except for/dev/hdb1 would move one. I then just mounted a 988M partition at/dev/hdb2
2-The boot loader takes over, bad move Corel since I prefer the OS/2 boot manager. I must find an easy way to correct things.
3-English only install, strange considering the big thing they make about their multilingual Word Perfect. No option whatsoever to change the keyboard during install. I have to try to remember where the keys are on the US keyboard, a pain in the ass it is.
In conclusion, it will be a lot of work to clean up after the Corel install but despite that I think this distro is impressive. They will give the evil empire a run for their money. What they did is probably acceptable for Joe Blow but there should be an avanced install mode for those of us who don't want to run the install mode for morons.
