I was going to assert that I have indeed dropped Dove in the shower, when I made a horrifying discovery: Not only is Dove indeed soap, but it probably runs Windows.
It's the western mentality. "Hey, does this belong to anyone?" -> "It's mine." "Oh....Can I use it?" -> "No, because it's mine and I might want to use it. And besides, you might break it." "Oh."
Ownership is one of the core concepts of western culture.
Most Ubuntu users who ask for my help are quite willing to open a terminal and run whatever commands I deem necessary to "fix" their problems. They'll even add "sudo" to the front of the command line if a command fails. All by themselves.
And they know me...how? Because I joined #ubuntu@freenode and said something that sounded intelligent?
Security through obscurity: as soon as spammers learn how trusting FOSS newbies are... well.
The "Real World" is whatever makes money. Corporate whoring? Check. Bad actors in bad movies? Check. Bad actors having "nip slips" on live television? Doublepluscheck.
Taking time to welcome a new neighbor to the block? Nada.
Given that most of Google's interesting "new" toys (the official Google Talk client, for example) don't run on Linux, I doubt that this one will either.
What, you wanted to run Linux on Google StackSmasher on Windows? Oh, never mind then...
You'll also have to learn to write your own make files - not a hard job.
It's not hard to write a simple Makefile (or Makefile.am), true. And I'll agree that GNU Make does its job -- executing commands based on dependency hierarchies -- very well.
But sometimes, I don't want to even think about dependency hierarchies and whatnot. If you want an alternative to e.g., autotools, I'd recommend looking at CMake (http://www.cmake.org/); it can generate build systems (makefiles or IDE project files, for example) for a number of different tools (even Visual Studio!).
And you'll find you'll need perl and bash scripts.
Not sure about the perl one (I've managed to get along fine with sed and grep so far), but a good working knowledge of shell scripting and available tools is essential. `man' or `info' can help with that.;)
Or maybe it's like saying that DLC (DownLoadable Content) is such a TTI (Totally Tubular Idea) that its a RCT (Really Cool Thing) that it needs its own TLA (Three Letter... oh, fuck it.
improving longevity... is a noble goal in science.
Is it? I'm not so sure. True, there are few who wish to die, and advancing technology in the medical world allows us to delay death for some amount of time. Isn't that selfish, though, in a world where resources are at a premium, and hundreds of thousands die each year of malnutrition?
How much are we willing to put into saving a single life, when the same resources could be used to save a hundred?
it's also in a dead language

Well, I guess we know which camp you're in.

I feel ...violated.
I don't know (but I suspect) that we'd be quicker, but at least we have the option to look without being accused of paranoia.
Or perversion.

I try to stay away from the elitist argument/viewpoint, since it tends to lead to some nasty holier-than-thou social delineations.
Some users really should be fixed [...] in the veterinary sense.
I don't see you volunteering.

Yeah, but what does the RIAA math say? Because I know their movies never make a profit
What about the MPAA's albums? ;)
Funny, in the name of profit, we are moving towards less regulation, less control, less accountability, and more resemblance to lawlessness.
Hey, it "worked" for the economy until just a few months ago.

Religion-bashing aside, wouldn't eternal happiness get rather dull, anyway? I rather like the challenge of trying to stay alive. :)

Sexism in America is not the topic being discussed, thanks.

'Course, I've likely misspelled somethign here.
Always something, isn't it?
Now, that's just evil.
Ass? Uh...
Soviet Egypt?
Jeopardot, is it?
You think stoners and crack heads are that smart?
You think that stoners and crackheads are that dangerous?Says he who has leet-speak in his sig.
The first time I ever did an "in Soviet Russia..." post, it was marked as redundant because someone else had beat me to it by a fraction of a second.
If you ask me, some anti-microsoft joke would have done better here. This is Slashdot, and a MS-related article, after all.
