Most of today's artist don't deserve money for their CRAPtastic music. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0385296// Maybe the record companies should be a little more selective of their artists?
Excellent points above, should be modded up... I was confronted in a meeting about a year ago, asked why the cost of maintenance was up on end user systems. I said that it's because of the relaxed Internet usage policy and their workstations becoming clogged with garbage from non-job related sites.
I employed squid, and several virus scanners at key entry points (firewall, email, etc.) and amazingly employee productivity is up 10%, downtime is almost non-existant (cept for a few hardware failures). So you tell me? Is is worth having these digital punks working for your company? Or do you set your foot down and lay the ground rules?
Initially I was hated for doing this, but there is a level of compromise that works (see PostScript below). Half your battle is listening to what your users need.
PS. Some employees still enjoy flash games from "pre-approved" sites during thier lunch hours. I open up the proxy to allow access to them during these times. You don't have to be a total Internet nazi.
Well, as a music lover and owner of 16 some odd GB of music (and it's ALL legit, and I don't share), I love iTunes.
There are very few albums out there that you can pop in your CD player, or make a playlist of the album, and listen through its entirety and could ruin the album integrity if you heard 1 song. Some great examples of artists that could make this claim: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd.
As for Garth Brooks, I like maybe 5 of your songs, and they are all on different albums. I don't own your 5 songs I like, because you are a TOOL and are greedy. The same for Bob Seger...FYI...Night Moves would be the ONLY entire album I would download of yours.
The artists that are new and opposed to music downloads know they are 1 hit wonders, and buyers won't get screwed on downloading 1 good song and 15 songs of crap. As for older proven bands and artists, you are hurting yourselves.
If you actually watched the keynote speech, you would have discovered that they didn't make anti-Microsoft comments, but were merely pointing out that "THEY" are the industry leaders in software development. Microsoft is following their lead by implementing many of their usuablility features into their new "OS" (i.e., spotlight, dashboard/widgets, notes, etc. etc.) These are all things that OS X had YEARS ago.
I think the whole Leopard/CopyCat theme is hilarious.
Microsoft is doing nothing groundbreaking. And we all should learn to expect more from them, not defend them. Their ENTIRE business is software, they basically have an unlimited budget, and they should be kicking the crap out of Apple. But instead, they try to emulate eye-candy and fail to fix the real issue, which is the CORE of their OS. Forget about reverse engineering thingies from OS X. Show us what you are made of. Ingenuity and their testicles walked out the door with Mr. Gates. They will have their asses handed to them soon enough.
On the otherhand, I do feel kind of ashamed of Apple...they did take the BSD infrastructure to build their fantastic OS, borrowing code to make money from isn't exactly something to gloat about.
But Dammit...I like it, I own it, and I'll promote it.
1. Evaluate the skills of your IT staff on a regular basis, and compensate them competitively. No body likes to be short changed and screwed. If you dont' give a fuck, they won't.
2. Eliminate all Microsoft Products from the external network. They are unsecure, unreliable, and expensive. Realize that because Microsoft is the biggest, it's not the "ONLY" solution. Let your IT staff be creative and think "outside the box" and you will be rewarded with ingenuity and skill.
3. Realize the TRUE value of technology within your company and plan your budget accordingly. You can't send your IT staff to a gunfight with a knife.
I purchased a Mac for the OS, and I highly recommend them to both beginner and advanced PC users simply because it's a bad-assed-rock-solid OS, and that's coming from one of the biggest preachers of PC hardware and Open Source on the block.
There are literally THOUSANDS of OSS apps that run on OSX because of it's roots.
They will never sell their OS to regular Joe PC users because they couldn't handle the tech support lines burning up with all the retarded hardware that's out their. It's about a controlled hardware environment.
I agree that the new OS won't change the market much, but the difference will come when Apple offers a wider variety of hardware in their lines.
They have consistenly been better with each OS release, and they are slowly but surely chewing away at Microsofts stranglehold.
---I'm waiting for my dual dual-core powermac, I want it now...maybe after the ADC?
would come to the conclusion that the mosquitoes on this planet aren't good enough?
Trust me A-Holes...the insects around the world DON'T need your fucking help.
Lessons about invading and genetically modified insect species:
1. Fire Ants in the southern US kill people and cause Bilions worth of damage and medical costs a year. 2. A form of asian lady bug is brought to the US to take out aphids and other crop infesting bugs; in turn creating a species of ladybug with a painful bite, that likes to swarm. 3. No-See-Ums (aka. Sand Fleas, biting midges) brought from South America that invade US shorelines after dusk. (Ask any Marine who's been through boot camp at Parris Island, SC about these horrific "flying teeth".) 4. Killer bees brought from Africa to create a more robust honey bee in South America swarms and kills thousands a year. 5. Gypsy Moths in the northern states of the US dessimate 1000's of acres of trees and forest a year, killing forests and the tourism industry. 6. Emerald Ash Borer brought from Asia recently, destroyed all the Ash trees and other hard wood species in Southern Michigan, Ohio, Indiana.
When the FPS and RTS online Multiplayer games hit it big. (mid 90's?)
The combination of broadband cable modem in my neighborhood and Unreal Tournament wasted many hours of my summers.
Notable mentions, Quake III, Ages of Empires (II was the best), Empire Earth, and Unreal Tournament 2K.
And then there's Battlefield 1942, the mother of all FPS online games. I still play the shit out of this one.
I don't like console games, for lack of control and my thumbs hurt. I grew out of them somewhere around the Nintendo 64.
Today's PC games aren't carrying the same enthusiasm as they used to. Doom 3 made me shit my pants a few times playing with the surround sound in the dark, and Half Life 2 (after too long of a wait) was done in a weekend. Far Cry and the CryEngine were pretty groundbreaking, but what happened to that?
So you visit Chicago, or some large city on vacation...You are looking for the nearest L or Tube station. You may even be in a bad neighborhood, or you dont' trust the directions that a local may give you.
So you power on your iPaq and (blink!) there is a free wifi network at the local cafe, apartment building, or local library. You quickly reference a city map, find out the station is 2 blocks south, and you are on your way. The day is saved.
Should I go to jail for some dumbass leaving his wifi unsecured? NO.
If you put a drinking fountain on the public sidewalk attached to your water meter, you can't expect that only your friends or people that visit you will only drink from it.
There are 100 different ways this coffee shop could have secured the network. Heck...spend more then 100 bucks on your WAP router...and you could even have rotating WPA keys. Come in...pay for your coffee...and get a key for the rest of the day.
The fact this guy is a sexual offender is irrelevant. That's making the assumption that he was out looking for trouble on MySpace. Unless you have the log files to prove where he was and when he did it, that shouldn't even matter.
I would recommend this guy get a lawyer, and go after this coffee house when this nonsensical bullshit is over. He should get at a minimum, free coffee and internet for a year.
Slow down, I haven't even purchased my HD television yet.
While watching a hockey playoff game a month ago, my buddy paid extra to have HD broadcast straight from the Cable provider (Charter charges for this) and was all proud of his Samsung wide screen LCD/hybrid TV.
To be honest with you, it didn't change the game experience for me that much. Wide screen was nice (got to see a few more dirty hits off the "regular" camera angle)and it wasn't enough for me to justify paying an extra 100-200 dollars for HD capability.
I don't honestly see the reason for the hype. Blu-Ray---Schmoo-Ray. Not worth my money for at least the next 5 years. Talk to me then (if they still make Blu-Ray disks).
I won't be the guy caught with the Hi-Fi system and laserdisc system...again...
Retro is in. All the boomers and their kids are digging back to their roots for satisfaction and the simple pleasures of a good time. Seems to me with all the new technology that is coming out at a seemingly alarming rate these days, just doesn't give the same amount of fun, before the next insane game comes out.
I don't need complex combo moves and 26 button joysticks to have a good time.
A fine example of this phenom, I had some friends (men and women) over for a barbeque that got rained out. I was in the basement and pulled out my old Intellivision and dusted it off. Put in Burgertime, and with the opening melody..there was a crowd around the TV, amazed that it still worked.
3am and 3 cases of beer later, they finally left. How many of them you think logged onto eBay to find their own systems?
This game will sell to our generation, as a retribution to all the quarters we put in machine for almost no result *raises my hand*.
Just like the GTO's, Mustangs, and Chargers...they are coming back, get ready.
I suggest you 16 year-olds, put down the Vicodin and grab a paddle.
And there is always going to be some facist/extremist/dictator around the world willing to take over the weak.
Yes, the US military is the most powerful (not the biggest, that goes to China).
The last time we stayed home and did something productive, you were 2 seconds from flying an ugly flag, goosestepping, and taking German lessons. The protection we provide around the world keeps your Country's individuality and right to mumblings like the one above possible.
Again, have some respect for the protection, and freedoms that our servicemen and women provide. So next time you see one on your streets on leave, take them out for a beer and thank them.
Lay off the Soldier of Fortune II dude, and have some respect for the men and women who put thier lives on the line so you can sit there on a Friday night whacking off to porn, playing WOW and eating your Capt. Crunch (Not a true military officer, just so you know).
When my server supplier switched to the Duo format from HT, the cost of my servers went up 250 dollars (Double the CPU cost). Consequently, I moved manufacturers.
I still stick with Intel procs in my servers (AMD X2 at home) for stability reasons (Troll me if you must) but NFORCE (IMO the only really stable AMD system)support for a 1U rack mount server using Linux has been a bitch for me to find.
I'm out buying up P4HT procs as fast as I can get them.
As Intel keeps jacking prices, I keep looking at AMD to be my saviour from price gouging.

I honestly have to laugh at anyone that thinks they could even begin to compare windows with a unix based system for security.
It's like comparing your screened front door to a steel vault door.

You have the option for either...
Matter of fact, the NVIDIA 7300GT is standard, and you can have upto 4 of them.
All bets are off with this one.
I can do it in 3 steps.
1. Evaluate the skills of your IT staff on a regular basis, and compensate them competitively. No body likes to be short changed and screwed. If you dont' give a fuck, they won't.

of how my pc will look.
First, I will get a boot screen, that says Please select your OS---
1.Mac OSX
2.Windows Vista (Or whatever the release name will be)
It's very strange, because the actual box looks much like the Mac Mini...Ha Ha! WAIT! It IS a Mac Mini.
The sexy/practical personal computer is already out there. Vive le Mac.
The biggest security flaw is the fact that the machine doesn't check for US citizenship before allowing someone to vote.
If you can't do it on paper, how do you expect the machine to work?
Fix the problems with the paper, then develop the machine.
Au Contraire!

Well for one thing, 98.7% of all desktop users could give a crap about the slower transfer speeds in a 2.5" drive.
Second, 98.7% of all desktop users are for a smaller and quieter system sitting on their desktop.
(example: my PC with an Antec Sonata "super quiet" case sits next to my mac mini on my desktop, and it sounds like a 747 in comparison)
Unless you are putting it in a drive array on your server, who gives a rats a-hole?
