HAL probably would have been fine, if not for it's conflicting directives.. It was more a commentary on how non-technical 'requirements' (in this case, by politically driven military supervisors with insufficient technical insight) get in the way of things..
If nothing else, hopefully it will serve as a reminder to AI developers not to expect an AI to simultaneously 'protect the lives of the crew' and 'fulfill the mission, even if it costs the crew's lives'.
I have read the GPL, though it was without sufficient context, and i can hardly say i'm qualified to comment at any length.. Also, i acknowledge your point. IANAL and i don't pretend to be one.. I merely think that it would be nice to have an example of a case which 'proved' that the GPL was valid, if only to lend extra legitimacy to the OSS community as a whole.
If, as you have said, however, it's at a different level and therefore irrelevant. If i understand what you're saying correctly, an attack on the GPL would effectively invalidate EULAs, Copyright Notices on media, etc..
Ya know, i always considered state-sponsored healthcare and education to be a really good idea for a country, in the same way that personal hygiene and regular exercise are good for humans.
If a country's strength is measured by the capability of it's populace, then it's in the country's own best interest to keep it's citizens well educated and healthy. Unless, of course, they're looking to run it in to the ground, kill it off and start over.. not, mind you, that i'm suggesting that anyone thinks that's a good idea. I really don't understand addressing this in immediate fiscal terms though, because the long term benefits to everyone (yes, even rich people) vastly outweigh the immediate cost.
As someone sitting in between the two generations, please let me say that this attitude is not restricted to the kids. There are many baby boomers who think they're entitled to more than they've worked for, but they've been believing that for much longer so it sticks out less. I would actually contend than, at least to a certain extent, this is a learned attitude.. That is, the spoilt kids have actually learned it from their spoilt rolemodels, although a lack of any real challenges is probably also a contributing factor.
I'd also like to say that i've personally worked with quite a few kids who don't have that attitude, and who are willing (even interested) in working on things bigger than themselves. They don't necessarily come from any common background or nationality, either.
This stereotype is not ill founded, but it's also not universal.
uhh.. thanks. That's entirely not the question i was asking, i'm afraid.. and i would have associated the term 'wheat country' with US slang, rather than Australian, but whatever.. it's not like i've spent a lot of time in America, so i don't really know how i'd tell the difference...
Anyway, i assume the OP was just trolling, but i bit anyway.
I was really wondering because i'm not that far away from where he is (apparently), and when i posted the question yesterday it was 40+ degrees C here.. (so like, 104f for our American friends.. ) which isn't that abnormal.. except that it's autumn now..
seems like the kind of thing that might mess a crop up, if it were consistent.. you probably already know it has been..
I would have thought so too, at first glance.. But what if the GPL were proven in court?
It wouldn't just be a problem for businesses that illegally use open source software and pass it off as their own, it might also give an air of business legitimacy to OSS in general (not that most businesses don't use OSS every day, but they don't necessarily know that they do). I can think of a few business models that might be put under pressure if that happened.
Every time I tell an MIT student that the UV LEDs will permanently blind them if they remove the cover, the response is the same. First, they say "Really?", and then they attempt to look into the endcap. True story. Explains a lot, I think.
tsk, you're right. I should have checked. However, the post wasn't modded down. Perhaps it was posted AC by someone logged in with bad karma? I couldn't find anything in the faqs on it..
Peru 'suddenly' becomes a rogue socialist state after the AMA lobbies congress to stop their illegal free medicine.. citizens are aided more than they would otherwise be, but still find things to complain about.
Srsly, tho.. Web2.0 is (supposedly) about cutting out the page refresh in between client actions and content updates. AJAX, SOAP, etc. are obvious examples. Of course, i've heard all types of other descriptions, to the extent that i'm no longer sure of that definition, as inaccessible to the public as the idea was anyway.
As for the movie player, it's not a particularly good idea to write something like that in a serverside-rendered language.. i guess it'd be possible to write one in javascript, but i haven't looked into it.
It seems to me that the *AA groups are confusing their own morality (and profits) with the laws of their country.. Even if it's just a linguistic liberty (equating 'sharing' or 'copying' with 'stealing'), they need to remember that the laws apply to them too, even if they're a 'legitimate business', and the people they're suing are 'criminals'.

What? You're from wheat country?
.au?
in what country?
can you clarify that?
Goddamn it.. you beat me to it!
pardon me while i prepare for my (-1) Redundant..
He'd better sympathize. IIRC, he and Woz got their start building blueboxes in a garage..
That's entirely untrue.. It's just that most of the Japanese material is animated and has English subtitles.. ;)
but conversely, there are very few popular games that have no words in them.. ;P
i went looking in prefs, but i can't find where this setting is. Also, it appears that ACs are at -1 by default now.
I've got no official confirmation on any of this, and the faqs don't reflect it (or haven't been updated) so let me know if i'm wrong.
Oh i wish i had mod points for you. +1 Insightful.
I see.. i guess i was right after all then. The faqs haven't been updated tho.

You're doing it wrong; the internet is for porn.
I wish i could metamoderate this '+1 Funny'. Oh teh irony.
So, can we reasonably say that free speech is protected by the constitution, but crimes caused by that speech are not?
like this one?
;)
It's DIY..
i fear that what you say may in fact be close to the practical truth.
Caesar is all things to all men.

Yes, precisely.
