    How can Microsoft "kill" Linux.

    They can't. Linux is not a company.

    As long as there are developers developing
    Linux and software for Linux, and as long as there are Linux users Linux will be alive and well.

    Whoever wants to use Linux is and will be able to,
    and there is nothing Microsoft can do about it.

    Although it would be nice to see Linux on the
    majority of PC's out there, it is not a requirement for Linux to survive.

    The computer was a hand me down from my uncle,
    who got himself a shiny new IBM PC.

    He gave me the computer, along with a bunch of game cartridges and a tape drive, an atari basic cartridge and a couple of books about Atari basic.

    The first line of code I ever typed
    were in Atari Basic, it went something like this:

    10 PRINT "HEFFEL";
    20 GOTO 10

    RUN

    So what if they are using Linux because they can use it for free?

    Isn't one of the main selling points of Linux
    that it offers a lower total cost of ownership?

    I was surprised there was no mention of Abiword
    on the best text editor/word processor category.

    I downloaded the latest .deb package on Sid and
    I was amazed with how good it is.

    Someone who is used to MS Word will feel quite
    at home with it (squigly red lines under mispelled words and all).

    It is a Word clone, which happens to be by far the most popular word processor in use today.

    It would be a good tool to migrate Windows users to Linux (don't have to pay hundreds or get an "underground" copy of Office to be able to do your homework).

    AOL targets a demographic of computer
    illiterate people, look at their commercials,
    all they brag about is how easy it is
    to use AOL.

    This demographic is not likely to be running
    Linux at home. Linux is mostly used
    by computer savvy people, which are
    not likely to be using AOL, not even
    on their Windows partitions.

    In summary, an AOL client for Linux
    would be a waste of resources and money
    for AOL.

    I don't doubt that his assertion that it is
    hard to install is true for most Linux distributions, but I installed it on
    Debian with no problem at all.

    apt-get install gnucash installed it
    with all of its dependencies, no fiddling
    required on my part at all, it even showed
    up on the GNOME menu.

    I still don't understand why APT is not yet
    the default packaging system for
    most Linux distributions.

    I migrated to Debian a few months ago
    after years of using RPM based distributions
    and I could not be happier.

    There two great clones of classic
    games for that console:

    Mad Bomber, a Kaboom! clone

    and

    Circus Linux, a Circus Atari clone.

    Both are very good.

    Quite frankly I don't care if
    Linux becomes mainstream or not.
    I like it, I use it. If other
    people don't like it and don't use it,
    it does not affect me.

    Does it matter that Linux desktops
    are .24% (or whatever) Not really.

    It's not like Linux is going to die
    because its not profitable. As long
    as there are developers writing
    free software for it, Linux will
    still be around.

    I went for the regular edition and spent my extra cash on the strategy guide. I haven't even looked at it yet (I just started playing last night) but for previous versions of Civilization it has been well worth the cash.

    Agreed, in the OSS development model, the fact that you don't have a 1.0 version does not mean that you don't have a usable product. Mozilla is definetly usable at its present stage. Perhaps in OSS when a piece of software reaches version 1.0, since its developers have received massive user feedback, it is actually complete?

    Modern linux distributions are as easy to use as Windows. You can point and click your way to pretty much anything.

    I don't think any windows user would have much trouble using one of these distributions.

    As a case in point, my 14 year old brother came to visit the other day (we live thousands of miles apart), he had never seen any computer running anything other than Windows. He had no problem whatsoever using my Mandrake 8 machine.

    • Servlets provide access to a wide array of Java APIs to do practically everything, including JDBC for database connectivity to a wide array of databases, RMI/CORBA for distributed computing, etc.
    • A new process does not need to be spawned with each http request, resulting in better performance.
    • With JSPs it is simple to separate the static parts of your web page from the ones created dynamically.

    Well, like it or not, clients are fairly homogeneous this days (Windows clients) while servers are fairly diverse (Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Free BSD, Windows NT, etc) so if you ask me, WORA is more important on the server side than in the client side.

    Handspring seems to be cannibalizing(sp?) the Palm's market with the Visor. The Visor is priced well below comparable offerings from Palm. So Palm needs to do something to justify their higher prices, and to keep their position as a leader.

    True, Handspring is having delivery problems, but this is because the demand for their product is so *huge*.

    If Palm does not get its act together, it will lose its position as a leader in the PDA market.

    I wonder if the DOJ will still be willing to settle, noticing that even after the Judge's ruling they have not changed their predatory business practices.

    Although it will be expensive for the government, they are going to have to monitor Microsoft very closely, to make sure they don't continue their predatory behavior. Microsoft has shown that if they are left alone, they will use any dirty trick in order to crush the competition.

    On a side note, could this be grounds for a lawsuit from IBM/Lotus? They don't even have to prove they are a monopoly.

    A long step in the right direction would be for Oracle to seriously fund the Blackdown Java project (I mean, to the tune of a dozen developers and a $1m or so). Having a seriously good JVM for Linux would really help - it would stimulate the development of Java-based apps, since the ISVs could count on having both the NC and PC markets to sell to.

    Isn't IBM already developing a good JDK for Linux?
    They already have JDK 1.1.8 for linux out (anybody know if it's any good) and they claim to be working on a Linux JDK 1.2.
