What the submitter didn't realize is the fact that this won't kill the ipod. Why is (s)he calling it an iPod killer? Some things are so standard that no matter how many competitors they have, they just won't die, or at least won't for a good couple of decades. Look at IBM's PC business. IBM has been outdone in the PC business for years, and they are only just ditching it.

The same is true of the iPod. Even if this was the greatest thing since sliced bread, it would not kill the iPod. People think iPod==MP3 player in the same way people think IE==web browser.

The iPod won't die, stop saying that it will.

Why can't they just use the CLI? The only good reason not to is for multimedia, which obviously a blind person wouldn't care about, and multiple virtual terminals, which nowadays you can just do with Ctrl+F1, Ctrl+F2, etc. Why not use that instead of this presumably horribly expensive item?

Get it through your head, the FLOSS (Free Libre Open Source Software) movement is not about better software. Most of us (if not all) are not attracted to FLOSS because of better software (though it does provide that,) rather we are attracted to FLOSS because it is free, we can look at the source code, and it's just morally wrong to support Microsoft.

But even so, FLOSS is better. Wow, there was one problem in IE that also affected Firefox. That doesn't mean that Microsoft "beat" Firefox. Winning the (minor) battle does not mean you won the war. If you want, I could post a list of all the reasons Firefox is better than Internet Explorer, but I'm sure you are a big boy, and you are smart enough to use Google to find this out for yourself.

By the way, there still is a security vulnerability MS hasn't patched. It's called "ActiveX." And also, what does not patching a security vulnerability quickly enough have to do with sucking cock?

Let me make a few preemptive arguments before the inevitable "Free Kevin"-esque posts start coming by the hundreds.

This guy is a criminal. He robbed people, or attempted to rob them. This is like robbing a bank, only worse. Nobody should show any sympathy for this guy. In fact, for the identity theft and fraud he commited, nine years is much too short of a sentence.

I know that a lot of the people who read this may tend to sympathize with him. This is the nature of /.ers. For proof, look no further than the topic which this is posted under.

That's right, "Your Rights Online." Some editors or submitters apparently think that we have the online right to attempt to steal the property of other people, which if you think about for a minute is absurd.
The reason a lot of /.ers want to sympathize with this guy is the fact that a lot of them are (good) hackers. No matter how dirty his actions were, they don't want to see a fellow hacker put in prison.

But please, think before you post inane things about how our legal system is evil and corrupt. This is good. Thank God for the law.

  25. How good will this really be? on Internet-By-Airship Scheduled For Trial Next Month · · Score: 2, Insightful

I really don't think this will be all that good. First of all, I don't know a whole lot about satellite transmission, but I know it's a lot slower than standard internet technology.

Combine this lack of competitive speed with the fact that your network is relying on floating things 13 miles in the air for its reliability. Even if this is no less safe than a server sitting in a room (which I seriously doubt) someone will still have to have a physical presense sooner or later to fix something or install new hardware.

Also, how much is this going to cost? Tons and tons of anything, including helium, isn't cheap. Also, as I mentioned before, maintenance will be a real pain. Not only will it be a real pain, but it will cost a great deal of money to perform. Even if your server only needs maintenance once every two years, that still adds up. This will equate to higher costs for end users.

Furthermore, I think the reliability will be rather low. I don't know why, but I just have a bad feeling about tons of servers and equipment suspended in the air.

Maybe my misgivings are unfounded, but I really don't think this will fly. (pun not intended.) I like the idea, but I think it will be more productive, cheap, and reliable to use lots of inexpensive 802.11 equipment.
