Very interesting.
Signs indicate, then, that MMORPG's are becoming Role Playing Games for our REAL lives? People play MMORPG's and RPG's to escape, not to role play their own lives...
Perhaps we will see two types of MMORPG's: one where you remain 'anonymous' (like the ones nowdays) and ones where its a virtual reprentation of the REAL YOU. In that sense, the latter is basically a VERY fancy virtual chatroom. No different from nowadays. Except maybe instead of *just* chatting you can chat over a friendly game of, virtual golf, virtual fishing, etc.
The latter idea has already been explored, and I don't think it has caught on. I doubt it will until the graphics become SO good and there are so many "virtual" socializing activities that people cannot resist it. Also, chatting via typing SIMPLY will not do... how about integrated N-way Skype-type chat (like those headset thingies for Counterstrike).
Well if its already upon us then I weep for the future.
Good thing as one of the above posters commented we have open source, so we can all jump to Linux. Transferring from MS Windows shouldn't be too bad, we just need to convert all our docs to Staroffice format, convert our Outlook express email archives, and our media (jpgs and mp3s and avis) are allready playable on Linux anyways.
Perhaps the one thing we'd give up is gaming. Good thing consoles can save the day then. I'm not usually one to support consoles, but maybe they do have some good use after all..
well, PowerPC would be IBM, and I'm pretty sure IBM would jump on the DRM wagon too, so there goes that solution.
As for bypassing DRM in the motherboard: are you sure its that easy? I'm thinking the DRM will be engineered into the chip itself, as part of the whole CPU architecture....!!!
Maybe I should take that microprocessor design class after all...
I wonder if whichever genius Sony/BMG exec did this is fired already... surely the other Sony branches love this publicity.
Do people think this will eventually harm or even dent Sony's brand image?
As a fellow computer saavy user here on Slashdot I'm already trying to actively, personally boycott Sony and any company that is bent on using DRM.
And you guys say, what if Intel and AMD both DRM there chips? Surely, I can't boycott computers in general can I?
But there HAS to be a few clever electrical and computer engineers out there who will make a new company *specifically* to have non-drm chips. Sure, it costs millions in R&D. But at the time that DRM is in chips making a retro x86 compatabile CPU that can be fabbed in Taiwan/China shouldn't be too hard should it?
WOW. That is dedication. If I actually spent the time beforehand figuring out exactly which studios made what and who owns what studios, I might just do the same. But, *sigh*, I'm afraid I'm far too lazy for that...
That's an excellent point. Hopefully Slashdot, the Inq, etc will be enough to get on CNN's frontpage... if CNN isn't somehow owned by Sony in some way already!
Mod this man up!
Ok sure, so boycotting Sony is not realistic. Or is it...?
We can really do without them.
Screw their stupid DRM'ed Memorysticks, we have our SD and CompactFlash.
Screw their VAIO's, we have Dell and Taiwanese laptops..
Screw their TV's, we have better ones from other brands.
Screw PS3, we have XBOX2 and Nintendo Revolution.
Screw PSP, we have Nintendo DS.
Once they get the collective shaft, well, other companies will think twice before pulling shit like this.
This 'device' within a few months will appear for the computer, probably made by Logitech or some company like that. There will be drivers that translate its movement into traditional WASD+mouse-look controls, and the big deal will be over.
I am happy for Nintendo though; as a longtime fan of them and the industry in general I'd like to see them back in the game and take down the cocky newcomers Playstation and XBOX.

Imagine once they finish terraforming Mars, and humans go settle there. Then the Earth starts taxing Mars heavily for terraforming/transportation/initial fees, and the Martian humans get pissed off and separate from Earth. Then a huge war starts, and then the Martians discover Gundanium, and then these giant robots... ok, wrong forum:D
Yes, you're right. I would rather, however, that *several* search companies comprise the backbone of the internet rather than one single one upon which everyone will become dependent on. My point was that when everyone becomes dependent on this one company, there will be trouble. So, Yahoo being in there is GREAT. I hope MSN jumps into there soon too at that level.
Yes, you're right, when adults do it they *do* stick to it. And adults *do* do it.
I don't mean to sound paranoid or to cry wolf, but the way Google is going really makes it seem scary how much info they control.
Remember that "Googlezon" flash animation about the Google Corp. taking over the world? Google seems to be heading there... with all this info in their control, it seems like they have or will have a very firm control over what information people see.
Look at the way they treated CNET; sure CNET maybe did do a little poor publishing, but they shouldn't be treated so immaturely: "We won't talk to CNET for a whole year." That's what children do!
Now imagine when Google has control over all the world's information, and they are the *sole* backbone of the internet. Then they can *really* take over who and who doesn't get "access" to the info. And if they do so over petty whims such as a small news article, by golly its gonna be scary.
IBM is pretty crazy when it comes to advanced research in any of its fields.
I have heard of stories from researchers there that IBM has its own terminology for alot of technical EE/CS stuff, as they discovered it way before the world did but were so secretive they didn't publish any of it.
I'm not surprised if IBM has enough tech in search to seriously knock down Google!
This OSS thing comes as a surprise, as it contradicts their secretiveness about their research.
So why don't you guys just fork the code and start from that point onwards, and ignore this Corporation. Although this maybe a naive extreme view, wouldn't it work well?

Hi, thanks for this very helpful information. Yes, my original comment was born of ignorance :D
I thought the premise of LINUX was that there was supposed to be a FREE version of each distro; this is a MUST..?!
