  1. Re:Anyone who thinks Sony didn't copy the Wii? on Controller Comparison - PlayStation 3 vs. Wii · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually the Sony controller works better than the Wii for flight sims. It handled pretty well with Warhawk. Personally, I wouldn't like using the Nintendo controllers for every single game and I doubt anyone else would either, which is why the Wii has a controller more like a Dual Shock as well now.

It doesn't matter who's "copying" who -- do you use Internet explorer? OMG it so COPIED netscape. Get over it.

From everything I've seen (and in fact it was mentioned in TFA) the Sony controller did not work well in Warhawk. Everything I've read has said it was laggy, you could even see that it was laggy during the press conference. As for the fact that it worked better for flight sims, it would seem to me that if you hold the Wii controller sideways (like they did for Excite Truck) that it would have the exact same functionality as Sony's controller. There was even a flight sim for the Wii on the show floor that seemed to control at least as well as Warhawk if not better. Also it's been hinted at that the Wii will also use Gamecube controllers to control games such as Super Smash Brothers, so that shouldn't be a problem.

As for the "Dual Shock copy" that is the Classic Controller it's been said that it will only be used for Virtual Console games, and it really looks more like an SNES controller with two analog stick than it does a Dual Shock.

An no I don't use Internet Explorer. I can't believe that any self respecting member of /. would use IE. I use a combination of Opera and Firefox, and I'm extremely excited that Opera will be on the Wii and DS in the near future.

Multiple experiences with a controller after reviewing multiple games..... one experience with a controller after reviewing one game...... Considering there is only one game on the PS3 that uses the feature (because Sony only told developers about it 2 or 3 WEEKS AGO), it seems to be a good early preview of the capabilities.

  3. Anyone who thinks Sony didn't copy the Wii? on Controller Comparison - PlayStation 3 vs. Wii · · Score: 5, Interesting

The fact that there is only one game that utilizes the motion control and the fact that Warhawk's development team only had a few weeks to put it into the game is very telling that this was a last minute addition to the console. If there's anyone out there that thinks that Sony isn't trying to copy the Wii they are in denial. I just hope that Sony's cheap rip-off doesn't cause people to overlook the Wii because they think it will be bad as well.

Newer DVDs like Chicken Little and Madagascar have new copy protection schemes that you might need "vobblanker" to get rid of. check out http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/d vd_tools/index6.cfm for a link. 5. Another way for studios to double dip? on Theaters Unhappy About Faster DVD Releases · · Score: 1

I wonder if this is about piracy or if it's just another ploy to let the studios double (or triple or quadruple, etc.) dip in the DVD market. Think about it, the day the films released a bar bones DVD of the film is also released. It's probably not anamorphic and comes with the film only. Then 6 months down the line the studio releases the "special" anamorphic edition with special features, DTS sound, etc. This gives them an even better excuse to double dip and the sad part is a lot of consumers will spend money on both versions. For some reason I don't see piracy as the only motivation here.

Am I the only one who sees a chance for the theater owners to profit a bit out of this deal? Let's say Star Wars Episode III was released in theaters and DVD on the same day, what's to stop an enterprising theater owner from setting up a small kiosk in his lobby with said DVD for sale (with just a slight mark-up of course). Those theater goers that found the movie to be worth owning could then buy it without having to make a separate trip to the store. It seems like a good idea to me.

  7. Re:Xbox 360 Arcade on Golden Age of Arcade Games · · Score: 1

I can see the Revolution bringing a bigger boost to Indy gaming, as long as Nintendo allows new downloadable games on their virtual console. Think about it, when a developer makes a game for Xbox Live Arcadem they still have to develop it for the Xbox 360. However, with the Revolution you could develop for the NES, SNES or N64 and still be able to run it on the Revolution. I would think that it would be a lot easier (and cheaper) to develop a new NES game than a Xbox 360 game.

Well not everyone realizes that the XBox bombed in Japan. All they see is it's relative success in the US and then wonder why Microsoft is taking a loss. I dunno if they would have been in the black by now if the XBox was a success over seas, but I am sure they hoped and expected it to do better than it did.

I really don't understand the logic behind this. Selling more of a system that you're selling at a loss in the first place is not can to cause you to make more money in fact it'll put you farther into the red.

For example lets say I sell hot dogs for $1.50, but they cost me $2.50 a piece to manufacture. If I sell 100 hot dogs I lose $100, but if I sell 200 I lose $200, even if I sell other things along with the hot dogs such as soda and chips it's still going to be hard for me to overcome the loss of money from the hot dogs.

  11. Why even buy CD's? on Sony's New Nagging Copy Protection · · Score: 1

My main question is why should I even go to a store like Best Buy and buy the CD? I can just go to iTunes and download the album, usually for less money, and then I can make my own CD and use the music on an iPod. Also if I need copies of the files without the DRM I either use one of the utilities available on the internet, or I just burn and then rip to MP3. What incentive is there for me to buy music from a brick and mortar store anymore? I guess I just don't get what the point of this is.

I agree that the battery life will probably not be 6 hours on average, but I also don't see Sony being stupid enough to put it out there with a 1-2 hour battery life. I think that somewhere between 3-5 is probably going to be typical, but again I could be wrong.

I don't really find this reasoning very logical. Microsoft hasn't had a failed system, but that doesn't mean that the Xbox2 won't fail. The only failed system that Nintendo has had is the Virtual boy, and I think even that made a decent profit in Japan. You can't rely on past performance to guide how you think a new system is going to do. If you could the N64 would have been the dominant console of that generation not the PS1.

There are still some problems with these stats though. First of all from what I understand this is what it would be with a relatively simple game that didn't access the disc much. So a puzzle game could get this kind of battery life, but a game such as GTA will get no where near this. Also, if you have headphones that means that the speakers aren't turned on, meaning that without headphones the battery life will be even less. I'm really interested in a PSP, but if the real-life average battery life is going to be less than 4 hours I think I'll wait until they come out with higher capacity batteries or something. I also think it's just a little odd that the system is launching and Sony still hasn't released official statistics on this question.
