  1. I still dont understand on GTA3 and Vice City now Online Multiplayer · · Score: 4, Interesting

i still dont understand why Rockstar didnt implement some kind of multiplayer mode in Vice City. The multiplayer in GTA and GTA London was by far some of the most fun (and ridiculous) LAN gaming experience I have ever had. Theres only so much fun you can have fragging - but once you start playing silly mini games like (kill as many pedestrians as possible in 2 mins) and (hunt each other down with only the rocket launcher) it showed the actual completely silly fun you could have with the game. I do enjoy Vice City, it is a good (however a little overrated) game. But it would have benefited tenfold from a proper built-in multiplayer mode.

Maybe someone should note that the mod is for GTA3. The original Grand Theft Auto had multiplayer right out of the box. I can't remember if it was LAN only or if internet play was possible as well. But then that was a PC only game, right.

I wonder if precious features such as multiplayer will get rarer, now that many hit titles are ported from various consoles to proper computers. In this case the game was released with the unfinished multiplayer code and some dedicated people are getting it to work. Why did the original programmers give up at what appears to be more than half way through?

I'd like to see them ship this sooner rather than later. People are excited about this release and we'd like to get our hands on it to become familiar with it.

I hope this release sticks around for a few years and Apple chooses to update it rather than come up with some new cat name and ask people to pay for it. I doubt that, however, since OS updates seems to be a major cash cow for Apple.

They are inadvertently (or purposefully) creating a situation where people are running 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and now 10.4...makes it very tough for developers. We can't assume that everyone has the money to upgrade their OS all the time (and yes, I know they should).

Thinking about using a specific distro, I am thinking in Mandrake-Conectiva here. And here is where I think Mandrake really made a good move buying Conectiva .

As for the government decision in spending tax payers $$ in FOSS instead of a proprietary system I think is the most sensate thing a government can do.

You see, in some undeveloped countries as Mexico (mine), Brazil, there exists corruption and often people from some offices buy Adobe Acrobat (no, not the reader) or other expensive-like-software just to spend the money the government gives (so the government give them more money the next cycle). They usually use it only to create PDFs... from .DOC or things like that (yes, i saw it myself at least in Mexico).

So, at least as a tax payer, I will know that the money (at least some part of it) I am paying is ending in something specific (those Government-funded-OSS) and that, at the end, they are mine, I can use it I can destroy it I can install, uninstall and do whatever the hell I want with them.

I think that was one of the motives for the government to use OSS, as some politic (don't know who) from Brazil told to someone from Microsoft, it is not possible for the government to be "transparent" and use some proprietary software (at the end, it IS information no?).

Well... I think more countries should learn from the example. For me it is a really good move, not caring about the OSS advocacy, but about the government/political side of the coin.

What does the Knoppix developers think?, I think it is a major concern now because is widely used to introduce people to linux.

If People need to install JRE to properly run OOo, then it may not come preinstalled in Knoppix (if they chose not to include it), and OOo would not be an "Out of the box" program for Knoppix (not for at least some of the features like the DB).

And also, if they chose not to include it, then OOo user base will decrease considerably.

    anyway,

Actually I think mailing out new CDs is far more likely to work than persuading users to keep their own systems (especially Windows boxes) up to date.

(You could in principle install a Linux system on each user's own hard disk and push out updates to it, but giving them a new CD has far less to go wrong.)

I rather miss the days when performing an operating system upgrade was as simple as opening the computer and putting in some new ROM chips; putting in a new CD and rebooting is getting back towards that level of friendliness.

Yes, I think you are right about the 1GB, partially, but I remember when they where beta-beta testing it and you could get an account (sign up) and someone told me that Google was testing a gmail account I asked why would I like ANOTHER email account? (I had hotmail, linuxmail, yahoo and my work mail accounts).

He told me "well, maybe because they offer 1GB of space and you can search in your mail instead ordering it". At that time I was not aware of all the other features (threaded email, clean UI , no intrusive ads, labels, etc etc).

After a while I went in search of gmail only to find that you could just enter with an invitation.

I think that is what made them a lot of people to enter, it is like the "myth" surrounding them, only few know it, only fewer are into it and well, its darn cool (and you found lots of other features).

I think I have had my gmail only for 6 months, and I really love it. I automatically notified all my contacts to write me to Gmail and although I get spam (those Nigerian ppl) it never gets to my inbox.

So in my opinion google did lot of things right but one of the most important things that made people "make the change" was the myth of the invitation
