The OLPC is aimed at underdeveloped countries and is a non for profit effort, whereas this new computer could be aimed at the general American market (open market). They are completely two different kinds of markets, and it can even be argued that one of them is not a market.

And what happens to the people using Ubuntu or other graphical operating system which do not know (or care) how to "cp file;sync" in a terminal? this is something that should be automatic for the desktop. And, another asked how is a program suppose to guess if the flash is a usb drive, I think it is pretty safe to assume that, if suddenly a new USB flash drive is found in the system and the user starts copying files, then that IS a removable drive.

I would be interested in knowing what linux do you use because with the one I use (Ubuntu) I usually have problems after copying some files (about say 1.5MB) to a flash thumb drive because it takes a loooong time to write it and even when I have waited more than 10 minutes and click the "unmount" option it just throws and error saying that the device is in use and can not be unmounted (after it, the device seems mounted in the user interface but is inaccessible via terminal) and if I remove the drive, the information is lost.

Now, for the legal implications, it could be argued that hotlinking is not distribution or any kind of copyright violation. It is similar to what it is sometimes discussed here in slashdot, if it is in the internet it is available. When you "hotlink" you are not copying or distributing the data, you are just adding a link to such image (see the html source, a href=... source.jpg). I do not find anything illegal in that. Of course it might still not be ethical.

Hehehe, I never said capitalism was bad or had to be replaced, I just stated that such was the effect of capitalism.

Not in this issue at least. As a lot of people have said, the people at the OLPC project do not want to commercialize the product in first world country. I am sorry but the product (the small computer with all the nice bells and whistles) does NOT cost $400 and although there are some good souls who would pay 2x the price to help a poor child, captialism just does not work like that.

If OLPC is really a beneficial project, then Intel's entry into the low-cost laptop market should be no threat to OLPC.

Of course not! they are two completely different "markets" (if you want to call the poor Africans or Americans [from the south of the American Continent that is]) a market... which suerly do not pay a lot.

They could have sold them for a small profit margin and use those profits to help the poor kids but they decided not to do it. That is where Intel comes into play. They might just want to profit in the market as the Eee has been doing since it was released.

I found outstanding that in 2007 you can still find pages in which each "option" of the homepage menu is depicted as an image which is *supposed* to represent whatever option the designer thought it will represent. The result is a terrible homepage with a bunch of images like collage in which you can not find whatever you are looking for.

In a similar issue, I am currently administrating the homepage of certain company, this company had a design done by certain designer, but the design is incomplete. Of course now, they need to add several other functionalities to such site but the "style" of the design was not made for that and anything you add seems like a terrible patch. I have already told them that if they want a good looking page, they should 1. Tell ME what is the functionality they want 2. Let me write the specifications of the pages and then 3. Send such specifications to the graphic designer so that he can make a design that considers all those options. But meh, they dont want to pay for a designer again...

  20. Re:And free content....well, sort of. on Which eBook Reader is the Best? · · Score: 1

As I stated in a story before (what's the deal with so many eBook related stories in slashdot recently?), YOU may not need an ebook reader. For you daily needs, the properties of an ebook reader might not be useful at all but there is people that would benefit a lot from an ebook reader.

The main idea of an ebook reader is to carry lots (and i mean lots as in 1GB) of "rich text" (text and images) in an object the size of a real book. If you only need to carry one store every say, 2 weeks (thats how long I take to read a book), then a stanard book is good for you, but if you need to access to that 1GB of media in one day and you can not, or do not want to carry 500kg of dead trees then you certainly would benefit from an ebook reader.

In the later case you would have to choose between an ebook reader or a laptop, and this is when the e-paper comes into play, providing better display quality (for reading) and less power requirements (giving more battery time). If you are able to connect your device throughout that one day then you certainly may prefer a laptop however if you do not have access to the mains (you might be in a 10 hours flight, or in the middle of Eygipt, or in the middle of the rainforest in the lacandona forest [yes, that is a factual example], etc) then you would like a device that provides you with the *most* possible battery time.

I do not know how difficult it would be but, implementing a charging mechanism similar to the XO laptop or by shaking the device (or better yet, just shaking the battery) would also be beneficial for those cases.

Anyways, I still think Vista is just an amalgam of whatever technologies they had more or less available and others they could make functional just in time to release the OS.

Vista is very very very much like Windows ME, which IIRC, when they were implementing it, they said it would have a lot of bells and whistles and, as they could not finish it in time they just used Win98SE and stuck some UI changes. (and two years later they made XP available).
