  1. Re:A few thoughts... on How Bill Gates Works · · Score: 5, Insightful

That has always been the MO for Bill Gates. Even after Microsoft went IPO he still drove around an old ratty Mercedes (and bought a Porsche collection, but that was more for his love of speed then bling). From day one he has made sure all developers have the same size office as him, with the same amount of windows (why Microsoft's original buildings were X's). Bill Gates is competitive, not materialistic. There is a reason he doesn't just quit right now and buy a huge yacht with Paul Allen. He's never seemed to care much about the bling.

Exactly... they are just comparing graphics. The real advantage to todays games is the depth of the environment, a game like Grand Theft Auto would have blown my mind more then a "pretty game". Games these days sure look pretty, but the old games had much longer playability. Heck, I STILL play Dr. Mario. Of course sometimes that had to do with the fact that you had to play through an entire game in an afternoon since "save points" didn't exist in many of them.

There are of course some very good games these days too, but all too many compensate for crappy game play with good graphics. Mike Tyson's punchout is just as fun as Fight Night Round 3.

Because those filters are passive, as Googles are active...they send the content of your email to a server to determine which ads to send you, and then send the results of clicking any ads back to their server and log everything in between. So in theory someone just looking at the google logs could tell that your email contained words like "cheating" "wife" "cocaine" etc, because you were served ads for those. I doubt google has the time to do such things, but in theory the data is there.

Something i've never quite understood is why reverse compatability is such a big issue...I used to think it was when I bought PS2, then I realized i never once played a PS1 game on it. Hopefully if you are dishing $400 out for a system it has enough games to keep you happy, and if not you still have the old system to play the old games on right? Just don't trade in that old system until you're sure you won't play the games anymore.

So companies are shipping jobs overseas and willing to accept inferior work to save a few bucks, and you want to band together and start demanding better wages, job security and benefits? There is a reason GM, Delphi and Ford are in massive debt, and its mainly because unions ensure people screwing a screw into an armrest on your minivan get $28 an hour. If we unionized, more of the work would simply be shipped off. Why would I as an employer bother negotiating a collective bargaining agreement with my programmers when i can just have 100 more pakistanis or non unionized programmers do it?

Until google ACTUALLY gets into the Office or OS world, they don't even directly compete. Microsoft competes with Google's entire business, but Google only competes with a small portion of MS's. Not everything needs to be one on one in the tech world, this is business not a sports game.

I didn't forget them....look when you roll out code to production, general best practice is to do it when the least amount of your users are effected. That would be like a friday night (for most of your users). MOST of the users of Google News and Google Maps are in North America (the maps only do North America, UK and Japan last I checked). 1pm EST on a Wednesday would put primetime users in Europe, and work users all accross the US and Canada. Yes, it was a great time to roll out because the people in Iran and Madagascar were unaffected. Unfortunately, these service are neither available to them, useful to them, nor highly used by them. Thus it was a mid-day rollout for all intents and purposes, the least of which being that the code was rolled out in California.
