  1. Google branches into another random area on Google Moves Into Video · · Score: 1

It seems like once a week there is a press release where google has bought some obscure company so they can do some random thing no one wanted but is kinda cool. Does anyone else think they may be overextending themselves, or just doing these random things to generate a press release and make their stock go up another 2 points? I have yet to see any of their new ideas that diversify thier income (98% advertising or whatever).

The Google Suggest for example was an idea created during one of these 20% time periods. 6. The main problem on Mathematics of the Social Security "Crisis" · · Score: 1

The main problem is that no one is willing to sacrifice politically to make the tough decisions that need to be made. When Social security was started, the average person did not live to age 65. Most people WOULD NEVER COLLECT. Now the average person lives over 80, but the Senior lobby refuses to let us raise the minimum age to collect. Further more, benefits have been raised to keep up with the cost of living instead of inflation, so people are taking more out then they ever put in, even if you adjust for inflation and a modest return.

"I'm not letting my guard down again," Stark said. "Never."

He read five years of tech magazines to keep up? Thats his first problem, is that he is an idiot...i don't know what good reading 5-year old tech magazines will do, i'm sure thats a stretch of the truth. And second if he is "smart enough" to install two firewalls, an anti-virus and an anti-spyware, how is he not smart enough to know who is reputable to buy from online? I've NEVER gotten spyware or a virus from buying from an online vendor...even non big name ones. The only time i've gotten spyware was thanks to leaky IE, but even if your doing business in the physical world, in theory you can still get this doing personal things. Take the Desktop Search for example, if you go to Google.com you will find links for suggesting you download the software...you dont even have to go to the Google labs section, it is certainly not beta "quality" software, and the release is not limited at all (like gmail, even though that seemingly found a loophole too, cuz who DOESNT have an account)...the only reason they keep it in beta is so they have less liability. Whenever anyone criticizes it or detects fatal security flaws they can just be like "hey, chill out, its just beta".

Giving the stock would result in even larger losses for the company as this would either require the issuance of new stock (diluting the existing stock) or the company buying stock off the open market. The way options work is that I'm given an option to buy the stock from the company at a "locked in" price for a certain amount of time. This is nice because as an executive, I can wait to exercise my options only when i'm guaranteed a fat profit. If i'm forced to buy the stock outright i may incur losses.
