I bought 3 CD's 9--technically 7, two 'bundles') last night (first time buying CD's in almost 2 years)...
Spent 9 hours last night getting 2 of the CD's copied.
I swear, if they were on LimeWire I would just download the songs there instead, it's *BLEEPING* ridiculous that I can't (un less than 5 hours per cd) get this music in my Winamp library due to copy protection..
Why pay for a product that I cant put on my ipod? Am i supposed to carry an iPhone, Walkman, and use a 200-disc changer in my car to listen to music? with 5 copies of each disk so I can not CD-juggle every 2 minutes??
Funny you said "let me check" and got it wrong on a few points::
1) AT&T does not have a 'circle' or my favs option, you can not get 'minute charge free' calls bypassing AT&T minute charges... Except for international--which in this case is almost exactly like using... Suprisingly... A CALLING CARD... Clearly not 'against company policy'.. You call you gvoice number from your phone (like you would the calling card 1800 number) and enteryour PIN, you can then place outbound calls over google's network, even if they are international.
2) no voip or data plan is used for phonecalls on at&t's side 3) you must use a new phone number Assigned or picked through google
I can't see any feature of google voice that isn't similar to other alternatives, it looks on the outside to be "we don't want this big name here"
in relation to the app store--- almost every feature of google voice is once again duplicated in apps on the store... Which are simply discribed as: 1) call connection apps (urbanspoon, 411 services, etc.) 2) texing apps (don't know the names but there is more the 9 apps for that)
and there are voip apps...
To me it looks like the FCC is asking: "why can no-names do the same thing and remain approved in the store, but a 'google branded' app doing the same thing gets AT&T to pressure apple to remove it (apple had already approved independent apps designed for google voice, they got pulled when AT&T and apple denied google voice services in the app store)
sorry for typo's, wrote this on my iPhone in AT&T... and I haveto say I jailbroke my iPhone to get gv mobile and it is life changig and great to have... Not to mention the app store keeps out a LOT of COMPETITIVE and INNOVATIVE applications or modificaions that make mobile life easier... I have used an iphone for the last yeAr and jail broke my iPhone to get gv mobile... My phone has been "better" for it eer since, even just using AT&T service!
Agreed. Airplanes aren't perfect... While it's unlikely to cause an issue, we here at slashdot have seen Electronic Devices malfunctioning. Or it could be as simple as a break in the shielding for the wires.
Cell Phones at miles up in the air put out near their maximum power trying to keep a connection with towers on the ground. Max Power = Max EMI that device can put out. As I said, unlikely, but possible, provided one of the two components (the cabling or the phone) was not performing to expectations.
Since when was something that's "Missing" = "stolen"?
I cant find my car keys right now, should I call the police and report my keys stolen? They are probably just in my jacket pocket, or on the table upstairs..

In order for Best Buy to send the computer back for repairs, it has to be shipped at least twice (to, and back), sometimes 4 times (to RTM).. So it is their responsibility to ensure it wasn't left in a warehouse somewhere and not shipped before jumping and saying it was stolen... and that research does take some time (days)...
I'm not defending Best Buy, They should pay for damages and breaking laws. However, people seem to be jumping on the bashing frenzy... I've had quiet a few products replaced by Best Buy without issues.. but then again, i dont walk in red-faced screaming for a manager... I've walked in to see that go on once, and while it got attention, I don't think that guy got much help by starting a fight in the front of the store.
Anyway, IMO Best Buy does a fine job with most their products... just perhaps not their Geek Squad... Not that i'd ever need their services.
I know quite a few people that are not.. the 3G handsets out right now are HUGE battery hogs... that's why Blackberry has not gone 3G yet.
The Nokia 6555 and LG CU720 (Shine) both have a 1-day battery life, assuming you talk on the phone for ~30-45 minutes.. Why? the 3g Data connection is always on.
Battery life is increased by turning off 3G.. However, at that point they are happy with the Handset, not with the 3g network
but some Cholesterol/Blood pressure is related to genetics.. My diet is closer to a vegetarians then the typical Americans and I have stage 2 high blood pressure, with low cholesterol counts.. I have maybe 2-3 servings of meat per week (FDA servings, not American services)..
I dont mind paying extra for my choices, I do mind paying extra for something I cant change... unless Medications are allowed to reduce BP and avoid the fee
Or go to the local T-Mobile... Nokia 6030 free after rebate with a contract..
its a small, simple, no-frill's phone.. No camera, no blue tooth.. its a phone, it makes calls, it can text message.... No bells and whistles... a simple phone.. can buy one new for ~$50.. but as with all cell carriers, its cheaper to free with a new contract
Yup, I was a dial-up user for 8(14) years, cable user for 6 years, DSL user for 2 years, and FIOS customer for the last year and a half...
as for the 8(14).. well the 6 years on cable I had to keep a dial-up backup connection, so while i had cable.. i also was 'required' to have dial-up if i wanted a connection at 7pm in the afternoon..
was over 250 people on cable within a mile of me -- for faster-than-dialup.. we couldnt even get ISDN in the area for years... at 7pm when everyone was home and online, Ping times were over 1000ms, internet speeds were still 2mb+, but it took forever to get communications started.. and forget anything latency-dependant (voip, games)
Cable is often given both great and horrible reviews -- It's really dependent on your area, and how the infrastructure was set up there. A low populated area with a crappy infrastructure wouldnt be noticed, move that to an area with over 1000 people/sq mi. and you have 400+ cable connections trying to go down 1 pipe... but if they did their homework and set up the network ahead of time to support that many connections... you have a great cable network...
Nowadays the cable network is doing great.. almost everyone went to DSL/Fibre when it became available, most of us were tired of our cable provider:-)..
DSL, sure speeds are slower, and it is EVENTUALLY shared... when you're in a moderatly populated area, not having to fight for the connection is -great-... My history with connections:
dial up: ping ~350, ~8kb/sec transfers
Cable (early morning): ~150ms ping, 150kb/s+ transfers
Cable (afternoon): ~950-1200ms ping, 80kb/s transfers
DSL: ~150ms Ping, 3mb down 512k up
Fiber: ~50ms ping, 14mb+ down, 1mb+ up (i don't usually upload on the connection anymore)
Look at your neighborhood, ask around.. If your cable network is bad.. go DSL if you can. Make sure you talk to somewhat tech-smart people in some of your asking around.
Teachers shouldn't eruse the exact same project every year... i've taken a photography class with the same instructor 3 semesters now, just for fun..
Every year he recycles about half the previous year's good ideas, rewords the projects in such a way we can't reuse the photos... and adds a few new ideas to the table...
Best instructor i've ever had, fun, puts some effort himself into the class, and makes it rather enjoyable
When i went to gaming cafe's and stores, they charged vending machine prices at the counter..
They wouldnt make any more money, as after sitting around the place for 6-8 hours walking the 900 feet to the vending machines down at Kmart kinda feels good to do...
As for theaters, I only buy drinks at theaters because I want to support them, otherwise it's not worth the price..
I have a case of bottled water in my truck, and up to 4 bottles in my motorcycle's saddlebags all the time... Water isnt carbonated like it is with soda, so when out and about it simply feels better to drink, especially on hot days...
If im in the mood for just plain water, I can have that, and for an extra 10 seconds of time, i can add the crystal light packets and have tea instead... Gets away from the whole sugar, artificial sugar, possible side effects of massive artificial sweetener intake.. etc...
Good, maybe they'll spend 1.3 billion less on crappy movies using 'big name stars' to try and sell whatever script they had monkies write....
I still go to *Good* movies, i just decided $6 in gas, $25 for tickets and $6 for a drink to share was too much to take a friend out to more then once every month or two... if that...
And when DVD's drop to $10, I usually buy the ones i liked... unfortunatly there's what, maybe 1 good movie every 2-3 months? depending on various tastes of course.
Artists just make the songs, but have no control over how they are distributed, thanks to record labels...
Some artists have had major objections to various acts their label put them through... The only other option though is to go 'indie'... CD Protection? Lawsuits? Use of their song in (movie/commercial/compelatin cd)? They got no rights to their own material/distribution...
A friend of mine was considering using an FM Modulator from his PC to broadcast the computer's audio across into another room for his speaker system.. In theory you could do this buying 1 FM Modulator and some basic clock/radio's..
Not super high-tech, not super-powerful, but gives you sound in every room ?
Problem would be finding an FM modulator running off AC power -- most are designed for Car's to go from CD-players or mp3 players to car audio...
Hell, I might try this myself.. being that I spend most my time in my basement / workshop, I don't get a strong signal for any station without the single cable I have running down from my Antenna on the roof... I could easily set this up and broadcast music into my Exercise room, or my Work room.. as well as my home theater system's reciever...
Probably would get a better singal then a 6-spliced wire... but not better then a straight connection, or a two-splice connection... but im not an electrician, I just play with sound systems a lot:-)
I only use copy's in my truck... I've had issues with CD playes (in general) eatting/scratchign CD's, especially when in motion (such as in the old days, running with a CD player on you)...
So I keep my 'fair use' backups in my truck... if it gets broken into, I don't loose the 'actual' CD, and thus dont have to destroy them;-)
and if something is stolen from me, Sony can't hold me responsible if my door was locked, and someone violated multiple laws to steal my property, I don't think the EULA can force me to protect an artist's work with my life, or face paying millions in court...
Ummm... hello?
Should have just modded your comment off-topic, but instead Let me say this:
1k is a VERY 'Budget' --- Key word here: GAMING RIG...
You jsut cant compare 'budget' *school* PC with 'budget' gaming rig.. I can make a budget school PC for probably $400 (Not using celeron processors).. gaming rigs easily hit $1,000-1,250 however.. as you need certain higher-quality parts.. the '1k' gaming rig is nothing new.. but it is nice to see someone spreading the word you dont need to spend $3,000-5,000 talking to Dell or Alienware to get a gaming rig...
I have to agree... my mp3 player is 2 years old (Creative Zen) and runs amazingly still.. My cell phone.. well... I spent $100 to 'upgrade' my phone when i got it, and nowadays its crap... areas i used to get signal I dont anymore, all sending/recieving has been slacking... just want to run my phone over already...
same here...
As long as i can add LED fans, swap out video cards, and play games in high resolutions when i want to, I dont care if it's a desktop or laptop...
Nowadays 'wide screen' laptops are all the rage, which sucks in (at least older) games that require fixed resolutions
I think ill just wait for someone to find a way around the 'microsoft xbox hard drive only' requirement and let me pop in my seagate 80gb i have sitting on the shelf...
and yeah, im not too excited about the x360... no hard drive in the base system means games will use the feature a lot less... as the article said...
I'm afraid if i do end up paying for it, i'll just end up turning it into a linux box...
Good question, I would like to know the answer as well.. Windows 7's easy dual-monitor setup has me addicted now!
agreed...

One step closer to The matrix?
or perhaps spawning ideas for Skynet?
Don't mean to jump on the 'citation needed' bandwagon -- in fact this is my first time requesting one...
I'm just curious why you came to that conclusion and, if true, I want to learn & understand why.
All I can say.. is HOT!
Sir, Please remove your eye before entering the court room
