  1. Gopher, ha! And pine/elm mail client via telnet to read the listserv you singed up for. A LOT has happened since I came back to computing in the mid 90s. Slashdot helped shape a great portion of my understanding of 'how' things work.. maybe not the 'why,' but it was an amazing time to be in tech.

I kinda blame the highly-monetized, overly-curated newsfeeds that only seem to inspire endless clickbait; forums that aren't community-moderated (thank you /. for the filter comments function), but moderated by companies that don't know porn from an artist's rendition of the nude form. There's more, but, meh.

Something about the world today doesn't seem to inspire curiosity in younger generations to the degree of previous generations. Whatever the reason(s), I really hope it doesn't fully poison the wonders of a life of learning..of seeing connections that you didn't notice before or finally finishing that project, whether code or sculpture, and feeling the satisfaction that comes with finality--maybe a new project because it's now becoming fun and new ideas are coming so rapidly that you know you just won't have enough time to do them all.

Slashdot and the early internet were an experience that I'm happy to say I was in the thick of. The early staff of /., like Roblimo and Commander Taco, made this website the place to be..to learn and even connect with others.

A similar thing happened to me in '08 in Albuquerque --I lived right next to Kirkland AFB, too.

I was overly-tired, sometimes mental fog. Then one day, BAM! I hear a 'whoosh,' a light ringing, and then the ringing got louder over the coming hours.

Eventually I lost the ability to hear anything over 3 kHz in one ear... it took over a period of 5 hours to really understand what seemed to be going on. I was more perplexed than scared, but I still haven't got my hearing back--I'm really, really looking forward to stem cells, as this ringing is getting like 10-years old!

And here's the kicker...I think I figured out what caused all those symptoms and eventual ailments... my roommate and I were exposed to massive amounts of carbon monoxide. Maybe these embassies have bad wiring causing various physical effects from EM... or maybe a bird tried to make its nest in the water heater's vent!

Occam's Razor always fails the person who can't know (lack of knowledge) or imagine (lack of creativity) all possible variables.

How can AC post slashdot if no internet?? AC not very good at ..probably most-everything, but talks themselves up to make lonesome life feel less so. 12. You, as a rational consumer, are only trying to get the best deal for your money.

As a profit-oriented company, Amazon is only trying to get the most money it can from its investments.

That said, I stopped shopping on Amazon years ago... today will mark the first time I seek an alternative to Whole Foods, as I have no intention of giving Bezos any more of my political support, aka socioeconomics. It sucks, because they're closer to home, next to other stores I shop at, and I have friends that work there.

I can see engineers blaming it on having to use third-party data-storage platforms... then board members claiming their company and devices are clearly not a physician or to be interpreted as one, therefore can't be liable for violating any health-related law.

But that won't help any of the people who's health profiles are there for anyone to scrutinize, whether it's a possible employer, insurance company, or the general electorate. Cue the jokes about possible scenarios...

Don't put them all in the same bucket. All those companies will profess their love of "diversity" because it's trendy, but Google and Facebook stand apart from the others in your list as they actively try to shove their social agenda down the throat of people.

As for Bill Gates, his philantropy is basically a scam.
