* Post a link to a goatse domain showing a guy with his balls on fire (this is for all intents and purposes considered 'ball lightning')

Well, that happens around here so often that they really need a moderation tag for "Whoosh!"
Now that they know how to create this phenomenon, this fad could catch on and lure our children into magnetic hallucination parties! Won't somebody think of the children!
From the end user point of view what can Chrome do that Android can not?
What can an Android device do that a PC can't? You're asking the wrong questions.
A device that has no storage, no potential infections, no installable software... nothing but a UI and an internet connection. It's the "toaster" of computers. The easier and safer you make them the more they will end up in every room of every home.
They are not replacements for Android devices, iPads, etc... nor replacements for full blown computers. Ask a parent if they want their 6 y/o using a controllable "dumb" internet terminal appliance or anything else and they'll tell you "safe and dumb as possible".
The only way we're going to get simple web "appliances" is if someone with muscle and money starts pushing them now.
Google has the resources and the "good name" (at least for now) to make this happen. Simple, safe & secure web appliances will make the basics of e-mail, web surfing and reading common format documents cheap and easy for everyone (this includes the poorer countries of the world). Document & content creation are down the road, but for right now let's get this moving in the right direction.
I hope they're nervous. They need a little "fear" to keep them honest (or at least as honest as they can be considering they are the some of the greediest bastards on earth).
Looks like both Dem's & Rep's aren't exactly thrilled with everything Elena Kagan stands for. It always sounds like a good choice when neither side is happy with the possibilities.
By "title updates" they really mean bug-fix patches. In other words, this "Online Pass" thingy is strictly negative.
This will also give EA the option of "discontinuing" this "super duper premium content" that was "soooo hot, and toooo cool" to even put on the game disk. They'll kill off this $10 DLC when the next sequel of their game hits the shelves.
From the iPhone to the new Ubuntu, the wet dream of Hollywood and RIAA - a closed user-inaccessible file system seems to be making the rounds everywhere, including (evidently) in open source. It seem to be a part of an overall push not just to wring the last bits of control from the hands of the users, but to ensure that the users will be content consumers, not content creators.
Though I don't doubt the *IAA crowd loves this type of thing there are a sh!t load of consumers who would love this type of device as well. Maybe not you, but/. readers are not generally the target market for *consumer* type devices.
Ubuntu would just be the OS on a lightweight, internet device. Much like Linux is just the OS under Android, Ubuntu would be the OS and not the main selling point of this type of product. Parents with young children would love this type of product. Control the websites their kids go to and they can't get infected. Can't download anything, can't really hurt the software portion of the product. Hell, I'd push something like this on about 1/4 of the users at most of my clients! If they're using internet based software, or an.asp based inventory system pointing back to their SBS, or a cloud based e-mail & customer service package, then what else do they need?
(Random text inserted at the end of the message to allow mouse chicks on text in Shashdot's edit window on Safari)
Yeah, that's a problem... all you need to do is resize your window. Once your textarea has been resized you should be able to get to the end of the line of text and continue editing.
There's a reason why Windows is still 95% desktop share, while Mac OSX is only 4%
Investment in existing software plays a huge roll in that. Smartphones don't have that issue (though a very small percentage of people have spent a ton on app downloads).
1) Do not hire anybody using social networking sites.
2) Make joining social networking sites a cause of immediate termination of employment.
Are you kidding me? How on earth do you expect employers to spy on their employees without the employees handing out their personal lives on a sliver platter? Sure, everyone wants the "best and the brightest" employees... but do you really need a Rhodes scholar to do your accounts payable paperwork? Or handle your returns department? Of course not. Employers use these sites to "safely" monitor their herd of employees without "going to far".
Last week the rumor mill was also discussing WebOS tablets. This isn't a new shocking development, this was pretty much expected the moment they bought Palm.
Wasn't this the main reason cited as to why they supposedly killed of their Win 7 "Slate"? The Jolly Rancher story was more of a surprise than WebOS on an HP tablet.
Obviously, if they had given the situation any thought they would made sure she had an Unjolly Rancher or a Sour Ball to more accurately reflect the school's position on this whole "threat of candy" issue.
Will this "new, magical and unicorn-like" WiFi travel further? Far enough for municipal WiFi to effectively cover its citizens? If so then the increased coverage is more important than the speed improvement (even though the speed bump is might impressive).
This is/. so no, I haven't read anything except the summary of that book, and quite frankly, I'm going to have say I was quite disappointed that it was nothing like the Apple ad it was based on. Go figure.
Remember that all Office applications embed a GUID in the document. My guess would be that the online version would as well. So your privacy is up for grabs.
Oh joy! Does this mean I'll be able to track my documents via Facebook or will Facebook just do it for me without my knowledge?
As a number of people in the Seattle Times Forum have noted, using this "web based" Office product *requires* downloading and installing an.exe
IEXPLORER.EXE ?
That *is* an interesting thought. Which browsers does Online Office 2010 work with? If it requires an.exe that kind of excludes Linux & Mac users (not to mention thise crazy enough to try it on their smart phones).
Naw... this one is like crack. Getting you hooked is "free" but once your documents are in its clutches, um, I mean file format, then your ass belongs to them.
Suuuuure you do, you just didn't install it. One of those nice PC bugs has probably already inoculated you against everything but itself;-)
It can also be carried out only when an attacker already has the ability to run a binary on the targeted PC.
So, if you're already infected then they can bypass your AV software... hmm...
I guess this is going to be a new attack vector for those 'fake AV' programs that download & run but can't do much harm because the user has a limited account.
Think of being able to buy your own domain name and use simple software such as Posterous to build a profile page in the style of your liking.
Except having individuals do this stuff for themselves will result in hundreds of millions of insecure, poorly managed and eventually abandoned sites.
People probably aren't willing to pay a minimum monthly hosting fee for their own domain/site. And if they were they'd rather pay it to a company to put their crap up rather than have to do it themselves. And why pay for it when they can get it for free* at Facebook?
Can Slashdotters predict where social networking is going? And how?
A pay-to-play social networking platform? No tracking, no "surprises" after you add a piece of personal information, no selling your soul just to 'socialize' online so you don't actually have to do it in person?
*free as in "only for the cost of all my personal information, web surfing habits and privacy".

I think MS has finally found a use for all those Zunes ... seawater-squirting cloud machines, now with 'SquirtsForSure'!

Apple is getting ready to release a new iPhone in the next few months.
After having seen the next version "leak" I'm certainly holding off replacing my 3G until it's available.

Can We Legislate Past the H.264 Debate?
No.
What's an "industry-recognized standard"?
"No" is recognized by almost every person, corporation and country. I'd say that's pretty standard.
... even worse than letting people like me post on Slashdot.
This is just a bad idea

Facebook is not compulsory.
I'm afraid you'll need to post that on Facebook so the right people will see it. Posting it here on /. is like shouting "pray" in a house of worship.
And switch from farmville to what similar game?
Start with an ant farm, move up to a fish tank and maybe someday, just maybe, we'll get you a puppy.
