  1. Interesting... on Navigating The Gaming PR Dance · · Score: 4, Insightful

Reading the one comment on here by an actual developer and several other online articles/posts on this subject elsewhere, I'm developing a new perspective on the supposedly harsh world of game development.

From what I've seen/read, many of the same game developers who are crying about how hard it is to develop a successful title are also the ones who can't make time for their PR duties. Complain about the big studios all you like, but if you're a small developer you *need* each and every PR opportunity that comes your way, and if you're "too busy coding" to take the time...well, good luck getting anyone's ear next when you need them.

I think this is another sad case of geeks underestimating the need for good sales/marketing/presentation. We all hate to do marketing/sales, but if you want to be successful in business - any business - great code isn't enough and maybe isn't even the most important thing.

If you're anyone but the top 5 developers/publishers and you're turning away *any* PR opportunity for any reason, you should either have your head examined or hire someone that can do the job properly.

I agree that BBEdit is getting a little pricey, but Hydra really isn't comparable to BBEdit yet. It has some cool features, and certainly shows a lot of promise, but comparing any current version of BBEdit to Hydra at this point just makes Hydra look like "My First Text Editor".

I'd gladly consider an alternative to BBEdit (especially if someone could replicate the Allaire Homesite file-management and tabbed editing interface on the Mac (why is this so hard? Does noone else find it annoying to have 15 windows open at the same time?). If that alternative turns out to be Hydra, so much the better since I dig it's collaborative features. But right now Hydra's basically a one-trick pony - it's TextEdit with Rendezvous and syntax coloring. Seems to me it needs way more functionality before it can stand next to BBEdit (compare the two search/replace windows for a quick example of how far Hydra needs to go).

I'll dutifully read the articles after the show's over to see if anyone did something really interesting - I doubt they will - but I can easily do without the buildup and blow-by-blow descriptions. Who gives a crap, really?

  10. re: Zipcar on What's with Zipcar? · · Score: 5, Informative

My wife and I are pretty much the target market for ZipCar. We live in Boston's South End. Our car was costing us $600/month in lease, insurance, parking spot rent, gas, and parking tickets, and we were using it about 4 times a month, so we got rid of it. When we heard about Zipcar, we joined up.

Within a 4 block radius of us there are 5 zipcars, parked in various alleys and parking lots. Prices range from $6-$8/hour and @ 40 a mile. The cars are all nice economy cars (Beetles, Jettas, etc.) The website reservation system works incredibly well, and the people are very nice to deal with. Zipcar even hosts occasional get-togethers around the area (we went to one - an outdoor picnic at the DeCordoba museum - nice and not at all cultish as I expected).

My take on it? Zipcar is a great deal for people who live in a city, especially one where having a car is outrageously expensive such as Boston, San Francisco, or NYC. For many people, an automobile is difficult to give up. But like smoking, once you do you realize how much of your time and money it consumes, and how much happier you are without it - especially since so few people actually *need* a car.

I found a car was more a pain in the ass than anything else (I'm old enough that I no longer tie my self-image to inanimate objects I own), and for those few times when I actually need a car, Zipcar fills the need with a minimum of hassle and at a reasonable price. For longer trips (say, anyhting over 20 miles or 1/2 day) renting a car is cheaper...for now.

I think it would be incredibly naive of us not to think that Microsoft doesn't have paid shills here on Slahsdot, ready at a moment's notice to spout corporate spin in response to anti-microsoft articles. God knows they've done it before. (I remember reading articles about how MS paid people to post negative messages about OS/2 on the support board on CompuServe)

MS probably doesn't care too much about the die-hard Linux/Unix/Apple folks on these boards, but I'm sure they realize that a lot of tech media tend to....shall we say "borrow" story ideas from here? And they definitely want to start putting their own spin on some of these issues right away. I'd say this is partly why we've been seeing so many rebuttals against the standard "MS sux" line we see so much of on here. (Some of those responses are actually valid - but it's easy to spot the shills: they're the ones who rely on misdirection to obscure the true issues, much like the first poster here has.)

Personally, I can think of few things lower than people who do this kind of thing. This is lying writ large, and selling yourself out in the most public of ways. But then, it's never too hard to finhd people with no self-respect to do your dirty work for you for a few bucks. Witness some of our fine elected representatives.

If you really feel that QT Broadcaster is valuable and useful - why not consider buying a Mac? OSX is unix-based, the hardware is pretty good, the price delta is pretty small, and you can even run Linux on the hardware. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

    b) Dropping OSX for Mac when it's making money probably wouldn't attract the attention of the DOJ or assorted State AGs, would it? Nope. Not at all. I'm sure there wouldn't be a potential lawsuit there.

Dropping Office v.X would likely result in a nightmare scenario for MS. I could easily conceive a situation where MS would be forced to sell the software rather than stop producing it, and also be forced into publishing their file format specs for the next couple years. Suddenly, MS is forced to be compatible with a published spec that AbiWord, OpenOffice, and anyone else can also use.

I think it would be cheaper and safer for MS to continue producing Office v.X, and I'm pretty certain that Apple's gamed this out already.
