What's this - the 10 commandments? You seem rather opinionated. Clearly the guys concerned don't agree with you. [...] They've spotted a bug in beta code and decided it was easier to tell the public rather than Google. Good luck to them.
Because it has become standard practice in the industry to inform the vendor and give them a reasonable amount of time to come out with a patch before publically annoucing the exploit. It's called professionalism a.k.a. an endangered species here at slashdot.
Yes, but where do you think Windows 2000 Terminal Services came from? It was based off of Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition. Which in turn can trace its origins back to Winframe. Amzingly, history actually matters. Imagine that.
If it was truly multi-user from the beginning then the terminal server/sevices kludges that Citrix provided would not have been necessary. If you get a chance track down the "Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Technical Reference" book. It talks about all the changes that had to be made. (ISBN 0-7356-0645-5).
suppose at some point IBM will get out of hardware entirely, and then it can re-name itself International Business Services or something else more appropriate.
If they get out of hardware are they going to start buying SUN hardware for the high-throuput, highly scalable systems? Some how I seriously doubt it. I think you are forgetting their server/solutions business.
Both look like they were found, or at least entered into the KB, after the release of Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (Nov. 2003), and hotfixes are available for both.
The Rpcss.exe bug appears to be fixed in W2K SP1 since it only applies to Windows 2000 Server (i.e. no service packs).
It looks like the print spooler bug was introduced in W2K SP1 and wasn't discovered or fixed until after SP3 (since only W2K SP1-SP3 are listed).
Considering how long SP1 has been out, not to mention SP4 I don't see this as a Microsoft problem (assuming it realyl is an OS issue).

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the CD. There is some proprietary software on the CD, I think a Windows version of Qt and some Borland stuff, which isn't really in line with the series policy. But I found out so late that it would have seriously messed things up for the Trolltech folks for me to insist on changes, so I let that go by this time (and made sure it would not happen again).
In the future why not just make sure people know that certain things only come with purchasing the book? That seems like a better deal than depriving users of a non-expiring non-commerical-use Qt 3.x that cannot be found anywhere else.
1.8 Internet Explorer Is Updated with the Service Pack
Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) version 5.01 is now updated only when you install a Windows 2000 service pack, in accordance with the Microsoft support strategy. Windows 2000 SP3 includes all of the fixes released in IE 5.01 with Service Pack 2, plus additional security and functionality fixes that apply to IE and Microsoft Outlook(R) Express version 5.01. For more information about these fixes, see article Q320853, "List of Bugs Fixed in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3," in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
Look for a four or more button mouse and assign the middle mouse button to [one of the ]the thumb button[s]. I assume there is a way to do that under Linux. Under Windows the logitech software lets you do it.
No offense, but why would I want a mouse without a scroll-wheel??? KDE supports the scroll-wheel. I assume Gnome does (or will in the future).
So before you go thinking "they aren't even taking precautions that would have saved them! Fire them!" understand that it's *exactly* that attitude which caused the networks to go down in the first place - the common misconception the a firewall is a magic wand that will solve all their ills.
Not to mention that for political or budgetarty reasons they may not be able to do what needs to be done. Why does everyone assume the network guys screwed up when it is just as likely (if not more likely) that its their management that fumbled the ball.
The Hulk was marketed as an action flick, which it wasn't. Maybe if they had marketed it to people who like drama and character interaction it would have done better. Heck, during the overly long escape sequence I was thinking "Come on, get it over already, this isn't a damn action flick". I think Ang Lee did a good job. You just had to know what to expect when you were going in.....
According to my Dad (who lives near Norwich, which is between Utica and Binghampton) they never lost power, but they did have a brownout for about 55 minutes. Several local TV stations did lose power (mostly from Binghamton).
FWIW, the Sun Ray 1.3 web admin interface had no navigation under NS7 which made it useless. The Sun Ray 2.0 version does however work. Interestingly, the SRSS 2.0 is the first version supported under Solaris 9....
I played Demon Stalkers and Fire King when I was a kid. Demon Stalkers was a gauntlet clone, but better. Fire King was a real role-playing game, but based on a significantly enhanced Demon Stalkers engine (levels could now be parallel to the current one, not jus t up or down, lots of new features, etc.). I still remember it as one of my favorite games. If I recall correctly, America's Cup was very well reguarded when it came out. Enemy Infestation was a dissapointment, but it was obviously good enough to land them the Fallout Tactics contract.
Also why do they make AM and FM bands have differnt presets? I could use like 5 presets spread between the bands and not need to wory about FM1 FM2 FM3 AM1 AM2 I only listen to 5 stations why should I need to worry about what band I am set to at all?
I always thought it came down to His and Hers....
Did you even read the article? If he had not been considered an employee it would have been a much easier and clear cut decision. Instead we get a questionable verdict where intellectual property is in effect equated to physical property.
FWIW, BeOS had plans to implement the entire GUI via OpenGL. To the user it would have still been a 2D interface, but under the hood it would have been OpenGL. Too bad Be went bye bye.
You still have to take the machine offline for all practical purposes. You cant upgrade samba or apache in place, without interrupting service.
So who cares if the downtime is for a reboot or a recompile? From the users point of view the machine is inaccessable
You've never had to reboot a system with several SCSI drives in it, have you? The difference between cycling a daemon and cycling the box can be considerable.

Per-user graphics sessions comes to mind. Get your hands on the book I mentioned.

Only when I accidently run Open Windows!

You mean like Parrot?
How about Sean Bean (Boromir) for Best Supporting Actor in FoTR???
Douglas Adams did the readings for HHGttG audio books so they could actually use him for the narration!

Duh!!!!
From what I have seen of CiscoWorks, it is more of a management tool and less of a design tool.

America's Cup
Bombs Away
Demon Stalkers
Fire King
These were all Commodore 64 titles (some came out on other systems as well).
I think Enemy Infestation was a weak tactical sim.
