It sounds to me that this was not really a systems penetration type of 'hack', rather the kid forged his Caller ID. So technically that should be a "phreak", not a "hack".
disparate pricing was often done by the retailer, if you tried to buy from the publisher's website the prices were the same. No they weren't. Even if you bought direct from Blizzard the "Mac" version and "Windows" version were different prices. Despite the fact that once the Mac version was released, all copies were hybrids. The price was not temporary while they cleared out inventory of Windows-only discs. That would have been understandable. (& far less offensive)
Yes, my gripe may be old. But forgetting an insult like that would take a while, I'd think.
The parallel I've always used is leaving an access point unsecured is like leaving your bike unlocked outside.
Imagine if you left your bike outside, unlocked, and someone took it while you were gone at work. BUT... after riding it around town, they brought it back undamaged before you came home, and you never even knew. Did you actually lose something? I'd say not. Of course you may not want strangers using your property. But if so, why don't you lock it up?
I gave up on simultaneous release dates the day Microsoft bought Bungie. Bungie was the last game developer to care about Mac OS. The best we have now is Blizzard.
Blizzard, the same group of insensitive clods who claimed Mac Starcraft would be released the same time it would for PC. Then they said it would be shortly after. Then by summer. Then by Christmas. In the end a FULL YEAR passed before it finally got released. AND, to add insult to injury, they made all copies PC/Mac hybrid discs, and had the audacity to charge $50 for a copy if it was in a "Mac" section of a store, but only $30 for the identical product if it were in the PC section.
Is the sky falling? Nope. It's just a par for the damn course.
If a natural person cannot be offered a settlement if he/she committed a crime, why should a corporation be any different? A corporation is an extension of a natural person for separate liability. Because a corporation can't be put in jail. So corporations pay money in fines when one commits a crime. So a financial settlement instead of court proceedings which would only end in financial penalties makes sense.
When I graduated high school, the top ten students that year were girls. That was true at 3 other high school graduations I went to that year. When I graduated college, the valedictorian and salutatorian were female. I don't believe these were rare cases. So what's this "gap" they talk about? Seems to me the guys are falling behind.
As everyone else is saying, this is crap if you have an LCD. For us with a CRT, it actually does make a difference.
On my 19" Sony Trinitron: (measured by my Kill-A-Watt)
Google: 132 watts
Blackle: 106 watts
Of course, I don't spend hours looking at Google. I look at Google's page for about 30 seconds and then go on to the page I'm searching for. So I'd say the energy savings by changing just Google are still overstated. And no, I'm not getting an LCD. I got this at work for free. LCD's suck. When OLED is out I might change my mind...
Basically their stance is,"We don't have a limit, we can't tell you how much is too much, but we're cutting your service anyway."
If publicity doesn't get them to change this, I'm sure a law firm will jump at the chance. Which will maybe get Comcast customers a coupon for a free pay per view movie or something equally worthless.
My cable line comes from my local power company, and I read the fine print when I signed up. In the contract it says they limit you to 10gb a month. I go way over that all the time and have never once gotten a call. It's obvioustly just a CYA (Cover Your Ass) clause in case I decide to download the entire library of the Pirate Bay or host a web server. It's stupid Comcast doesn't do the same.
average weekly download sales as of Nov. 27 fell 0.44% vs. the third quarter.
Downloads on ITMS drop less than one-half of one percent and "analysts" are already claiming it's on it's way out.
"The villain in the story is the iPod," says Chris Gorog, CEO of Napster Inc. "I have half a million subscribers who would love to use an iPod with my service,"
What about the several million iPod owners who would use your service, but can't because there's no Mac version?
Linux may be powerful, but the command prompt and configuration files and filesystem obscurity will just as soon get you a pink slip if something goes wrong and no one knows how to fix it but yourself.
Wait, so something goes wrong and they fire the only person who can fix it?

I meant liquid hand soap. I don't use bar soap, it clogs your pipes.
Stealing music so the artists don't see a dime, and paying for the privilege.
All hand soap I see at the store says "Anti-Bacterial". All the brands have switched. I know because I would use plain soap if it was there.
This is imitative, not innovative.
Only two? I'm insulted. Where's the "respect" for Mac?
Suspect still at large.

And BTW, please stop saying LCD display!
Theme parks worldwide close their doors, because roller coasters are suddenly boring.
If you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one.
Which should mean it's expired.
So when you're out of magenta, you can't print out that term paper that's due in 20 minutes, even though it's only in black.
I hope they make him apologize, like the EFF did this guy.

...will know that all their base are belong to us.
So if you're a Mac user and you (for some reason) wanted to use Walmart's music store, you're fscked.

Sounds like a Dilbert comic.
