I always wondered if the day would come when a part of the "blessed trinity" of FOSS would break down. For those that do not know the blessed trinity is the only way one can make money in FOSS, every other way leads to failure and bankruptcy. You have to 1.- Sell services and support (which is what Xenserver is doing), 2.- Sell hardware (the Android/TiVo model) or 3.- eBegging (community projects) and while I always thought #2 would be the one to fail first as we have already seen the "TiVo clause" which caused GPL adoption to plummet (if you do not believe it has I can provide pre and post GPL 3 stats, the chart looks like a classic triangle going down) a close second would be the first part of the trinity as it really is not hard for people to have a sense of entitlement that allows themselves to justify fucking themselves in the long term for short term gains.
Because looking up this company they appear to be exactly what the FOSS community claims they want companies to be, they make FOSS software, they support the community and give back, no different than Red Hat. They aren't even making a ton of profit, 300 million in net income on 3 billion in sales for a company that large? Really ain't shit, especially when you consider how much of that is having to be spent on talent and R&D. Yet here we are, with the company still offering a 100% free product to the community and simply trying to tweak their free product so they can get some more sales (which considering how crazy expensive it is to hire the kind of talent you need to build complex virtualization software? Is probably warranted and needed to keep up with megacorps like AMZN and MSFT) but does the community try to build a dialog? Maybe come to a mutually beneficial compromise? Nope the community fucks them over by crowdfunding a bunch who promises to give you all the benefits of the paid version for free....now do you think if Citrix goes under or is bought out by another company because they can't hire the great coders and compete that this crowdfunding bunch is gonna be able to build the product from the ground up?

It is trivially easy to do targeted marketing when it comes to vids when you have the amount of data GOOG has, if a person is watching video game reviews, hardware reviews, and movie reviews, guess what ads should be on those videos? What some kids don't remember is that when Atari was #1 the courts ruled that because you could build an Atari with COTS parts that pretty much anybody could build an "Atari Compatible" game console, which is why the NES and later consoles had lock out chips.
I had the Colecovision with the Atari add on and my cousin had a clone and while my Colecovision Atari module would play pretty much everything his would play the Atari titles fine but some of the third party stuff would be "off" so he would have to bring them over and play them on mine. I always figured those were the games pushing the system, probably expecting everything to be 100% like an Atari and I guess his wasn't.
If he used one of these clones? i could see it not clearing memory correctly or having some other bug that would give him an advantage a real Atari wouldn't.

Now when you compare it to the sites I went to that did NOT use targeted but simply went by the site I was on, like a tech site having an ad with sales on RAM or an article abut GPUs having GPU sales or a music site having sales on things like strings and amps? They actually gained some sales because it was simply common sense, if I'm looking at a review on RAM then, shock surprise, I might actually be looking for some RAM! But the ones that targeted? They are trying to sell me shit that I looked for ages ago and have already moved on so they had ZERO chance of selling me a damned thing because I had already bought what I searched for ages ago!

People who are taking NSAIDs like Ibuprophen for a long period of time aren't doing it for fun or minor boo boos, they are in serious pain. So this is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.
Take myself for example, I have to take NSAIDs because I bounced down a two lane at 65 MPH+ when a dog ran out in front of my bike when I was 16. The docs told me then that even though I didn't break any bones the amount of damage to the joints caused by the impact would mean later in life I would be seriously suffering and they are right, when the weather is cold or damp it feels like someone is jamming needles into my knees and wrists and the swelling makes even simple tasks seriously hard.
Now do I like hearing this about Ibuprofen? No but frankly I'd rather go to my doc and ask her whether I should get testosterone than not be able to walk or use my hands. Without NSAIDs my knee and wrist joints simply do not work, even if you took away the pain the inflammation would keep me from doing much. Tylenol can help with the pain but does squat for the swelling, aspirin can cause serious bleeding, out of the current choices we have ibuprofen and naproxen are probably the safest bets for the millions of us who have serious joint damage and which are not good candidates for joint replacement.
So the better solution is to let the AV trash the OS so the user gets a BSOD on reboot? The reason they are requiring this is because if the AV isn't patched it trashes the update and leaves the OS unbootable. I always wondered if he was playing on one of the bazillion Atari clones, as some of them were seriously buggy. What some kids don't remember is that when Atari was #1 the courts ruled that because you could build an Atari with COTS parts that pretty much anybody could build an "Atari Compatible" game console, which is why the NES and later consoles had lock out chips.
I had the Colecovision with the Atari add on and my cousin had a clone and while my Colecovision Atari module would play pretty much everything his would play the Atari titles fine but some of the third party stuff would be "off" so he would have to bring them over and play them on mine. I always figured those were the games pushing the system, probably expecting everything to be 100% like an Atari and I guess his wasn't.
If he used one of these clones? i could see it not clearing memory correctly or having some other bug that would give him an advantage a real Atari wouldn't.
The problem I've found with targeted advertising? Just forget the privacy implications or any of that but just look at the concept itself...it just doesn't work at selling you anything, it just annoys the hell out of you!
I'll use myself as an example, when all the "OMG targeted adverts OMG!" thing hit I decided to see what it was all about so I left all adblocking of the box I use at work? Result? They sold me exactly ZERO PRODUCTS when compared to those that simply based their ads on what type of site it was! I did some searching for a laptop BATTERY for a customer, not new laptops, not cases, just a battery for his older unit...did they give me ads for new batteries? Anything that would actually be useful even for that laptop like a case or power adapter or anything that made sense? Nope it was "ZOMFG we got NEW LAPTOPS HERE buy buy buy!" and that was FOR MONTHS, long after I had stopped searching for anything to do with a damned laptop!
Now when you compare it to the sites I went to that did NOT use targeted but simply went by the site I was on, like a tech site having an ad with sales on RAM or an article abut GPUs having GPU sales or a music site having sales on things like strings and amps? They actually gained some sales because it was simply common sense, if I'm looking at a review on RAM then, shock surprise, I might actually be looking for some RAM! But the ones that targeted? They are trying to sell me shit that I looked for ages ago and have already moved on so they had ZERO chance of selling me a damned thing because I had already bought what I searched for ages ago!
So at the end of the day not only do targeted ads invade your privacy but frankly they just do not work because they only care about what you did yesterday, not what you are looking for now or even what site you are on.

My Bad, I avoided all of the Intel chipsets like an STD, they were so much garbage that we shop guys knew to stay the hell away from anything Intel when it came to chipsets. Back then you wanted Nvidia or ATI, Intel was the crap you got stuck with if you didn't watch what you were buying.
The only positive I can say about Intel chipsets is I made a killing on entry level PCI and PCIe cards when Win 7 came out, all these folks would say "I want Win 7!" and I'd take one look and go "not with that board you don't, not unless you upgrade from those crap graphics".

Oh and on a personal note as someone who stuck with AMD FX while everyone was singing the praises of Intel (and still quite happy with my FX-8320e as even my games run buttery smooth at an average of 90 FPS+ while recording gameplay footage) I would be lying if I said it didn't give me a bit of a smile to see Intel getting bit right in the backside after their years of cripple compilers and bribing OEMs, the only thing that could make it more delicious would be if it turns out that Intel chips get a performance hit equal to what the cripple compiler did to AMD systems. People who are taking NSAIDs like Ibuprophen for a long period of time aren't doing it for fun or minor boo boos, they are in serious pain. So this is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.
Take myself for example, I have to take NSAIDs because I bounced down a two lane at 65 MPH+ when a dog ran out in front of my bike when I was 16. The docs told me then that even though I didn't break any bones the amount of damage to the joints caused by the impact would mean later in life I would be seriously suffering and they are right, when the weather is cold or damp it feels like someone is jamming needles into my knees and wrists and the swelling makes even simple tasks seriously hard.
Now do I like hearing this about Ibuprofen? No but frankly I'd rather go to my doc and ask her whether I should get testosterone than not be able to walk or use my hands. Without NSAIDs my knee and wrist joints simply do not work, even if you took away the pain the inflammation would keep me from doing much. Tylenol can help with the pain but does squat for the swelling, aspirin can cause serious bleeding, out of the current choices we have ibuprofen and naproxen are probably the safest bets for the millions of us who have serious joint damage and which are not good candidates for joint replacement.
So the better solution is to let the AV trash the OS so the user gets a BSOD on reboot? The reason they are requiring this is because if the AV isn't patched it trashes the update and leaves the OS unbootable. I'm sure once the majority of AVs push out a patch (which lets be honest an AV that doesn't push out some updates to deal with Meltdown is a truly shit AV) they will simply remove this requirement from the patch.

How about holding websites responsible for the damage they cause when they hand out malware infected ads to users?
