Hey Drinkypoo, according to this post you'll need the drivers for the Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 if you want to run Win 7, as they used the same chipset with Windows 7, if you want to run XP instead there are links at that post for drivers which work under XP. If you want to keep Vista I'd suggest you look up a copy of "TinyVista", its not easy to find but its a stripped down gamer version of Vista that actually runs a little better than XP on laptop hardware and of course all your current drivers will work. HTH.
But this is why i tell my customers when it comes to mobile ALWAYS buy it with the OS you want to run, because OEMs are the worst at dropping support for their laptops. Hell if I stuck with only the OEM drivers I wouldn't have had an update, nor support for DivX hardware acceleration, because they haven't released a single update since they released the unit. That's why i tell folks don't use a laptop as their only machine, the support is terrible and while its easy to get upgrades to most of the common desktop hardware often you'll find chips in mobile that were supported for a few months then dropped thus leaving you stranded. Sorry you got stuck and hope those work for you.
Plus it means buggier drivers as I noticed, especially in the first releases of the 10 and 11 series of drivers, that the monthly releases were more likely to be glitchy. Now that I know this it makes sense, most of the dev team were probably spending the majority of their time on fixing some major bug and just didn't have the time to do proper QA on the monthly. After all if you have a major game like Skyrim screwing up you aren't gonna be wasting as much time filling some monthly quota as you are fixing the major issue.
Personally I had started skipping every other update for this reason so it looks like I was probably getting the bug fix out of band releases and frankly they worked better than the monthly for me. If it gives them more time to fix bugs and do things right I'm all for this, I think totally arbitrary releases are just stupid, especially if they are on a breakneck pace like monthly. Quarterly I could see, but monthly? that's just not enough time.
Its not about what he did before, its about what Geffen did. At the time Cherry was the worst seller they had that month so to show off and win the bet Geffen chose to make his next album a million seller. I'm not saying Cherry wasn't a good writer, i'm saying THAT is how much power the promoters have. Look at how many sales his albums had on his American label between signing and Geffen promoting him. IIRC he put out FOUR albums that went nowhere why? Did they suck? Nope its just once the label signed him they didn't give a shit and let him rot without promotion.
I live a hop, skip, and a jump from Memphis and Branson and I see this all the time, a label will sign a young artist to keep other labels from getting them and then decide "they don't really fit our (image, agenda, marketing push this quarter)" so they simply let them rot until the contract runs out, thus using up any buzz these artists had built up and then tossing them aside.
And THAT is the problem in a nutshell. I have been told by several radio stations that if they DARE play anything not on the corporate list? they are FIRED. I thought payola was illegal? Not anymore it isn't, the labels either own directly or through corporate contracts with groups like clear channel own entire areas with no competition. Try to book most of the large venues and it doesn't matter if you have the money, why? Because ticketmaster owns the sales and they won't take your money, because they only work with the major labels.
I'm sorry friend but living close to two large music centers and being friends with plenty of guys in the trenches i see it every day, I see labels offering contracts that any lawyer will tell you is nothing but legal assrape and groups have no choice because you simply can't get beyond a certain size anymore without running into roadblocks put up by the majors. Sure you can work the 300 seat clubs until you die, but no radio stations will play you or even mention you are playing, most of the TV stations won't talk to you or sell you any commercial time except at 3AM, its all controlled by the cartel.
Oh yeah, BTW Crosshair there is a trademark for this attitude so next time someone pulls it on you just give 'em a link to Use Esoteric Workarounds because using a 40 step hoop jump is ALWAYS better than just designing the damned thing with common sense!..../facepalm/
Exactly and I'd add that as an owner of AMD cards that the monthly on time drivers? Really didn't do much. They'd add a little better support for some codec, a little bit better support for game X but frankly there was no reason why a lot of those monthly updates couldn't have been handed out with the bug fixes.
Personally I'd rather download a new driver when they've fixed bugs than have to go "Oh its the second Thursday of the month or whatever, time for an AMD driver". The only thing I don't like about the new policy is they put the 48xx series into legacy status but that's a personal quibble and I can understand why, but I don't have to like it. Of course that just gives me one more reason to avoid Windows 8, gotta look on the bright side and all.
Or it could just be dope dealers, anybody who has known one knows they get paranoid as hell and just looove cameras. I once knew one that you couldn't take a step within 2 blocks of his place without him seeing thanks to all the cameras.
Because I seriously doubt the cops or even a three letter agency is gonna have one of their guys risk electrocution when they can simply make a call and have the power shut off at the pole.
As for the cops saying they "gave it back to the owner" well what WOULD they say "yeah there are cameras all over the place, fuck if we know why". yep that would be a great way for the police to look incompetent. Of course if the local cops are on the take or the dealer is a snitch then they very may well have given Mr. paranoid back his cameras and told him to chill.
Exactly and as our digital technology gets better the amount of power we need drops so it is extremely doubtful anything will get through the Helipause except for the few (so far one that I know of,Arecibo) very VERY powerful transmissions.
Now consider that the alien listening has as wide a starfield as we have, the odds that he/she/it would be 1.-Pointed at earth when the broadcast reaches them and 2.-Wouldn't have that signal in some way blocked by one of their planets, solar activity, or even the revolution of their own planet must be so small as be impossible to calculate. After all how much of our own sky do we listen to 24/7/365?
So while I see no problem in letting donations fund this sort of research the odds of us hearing them or them hearing us, even if there were 100,000 planets with similar life and technology, must be worse than getting hit by lightning while winning the lotto for your third time.
Sorry but it looks like he is, as I believe ordering the execution of an American without trial IS illegal, as is warrantless wiretapping of citizens. Of course Bush did similar moves but illegal is illegal and all we got under Obama was Bush's third term, with all the dirty dealing plus a few new ones like using Fast&Furious to try to run a false flag op on the American people. And if THAT isn't an impeachable offense frankly then nothing is.
Well there is also the grandfather of them all,the Arduino which at $78 for the starter kit isn't bad at all, and if you want even cheaper they have the netduino for just $34, damned close price wise to the Pi. the nice thing about the Arduino is there are so many prebuilt modules you can just mix and match and build pretty much anything you want.
Actually we are broadcasting VERY little now, and most of what we are transmitting won't leave our own system. this is why if other life exists its gonna be hell to catch a signal as there is a very small window between finding out how to broadcast and switching to digital, if other life follows a similar pattern.
It won't matter because I doubt even gates can quiet them down if the other 40% are on board, hell you might even end up with a hostile attempt to take over the board. The ONLY way i can see gates pulling it back is if he agreed to step back in to day to day operations and he doesn't seem to have any desire to do that. The money being pissed down a rathole is his too and with big names like Gabe at Valve talking about setting up a Steambox Linux to compete with him I honestly think he'll have no choice but to talk Ballmer into stepping aside, maybe take some "head of R&D" bullshit job while they bring someone else in. because if the stock starts tanking because of lack of investor confidence in its CEO Gates having plenty of stock can't stop that and with each day he lets it go on he'll see his money going down the shitter as well. HP is still the #1 seller of PCs last I checked and look how bad THEIR stock tanked thanks to bad CEOs.
In the end MSFT simply can't afford another massive public and investor backlash and if it happens (which I believe it will) then nothing that Ballmer does after that will matter, the stock will still tank. unless Bill is willing to try to buy back the company I honestly think he'll be backed into a corner and have no choice. With even stodgy mags like Forbes turning on him he just doesn't have the allies to turn this around with Ballmer at the helm.
Thank you. Now imagine its 3AM, you haven't had ANY coffee yet, and they are screaming at you that parts of the network aren't working. Quick, could you look at a whole pile of IPV6 numbers in a list and spot which ones don't conform? Bet most can't because our brains just don't process hexadecimal nearly as well as it does numbers. But if they gave you that same list in IPV4 octets you'd spot the 194. numbers in less than 3 seconds.
Hell they could have gone to 7 or 8 and it would have still been easy, because triplets are easy for us humans to whip off, just like "the phone number song" where people got dot, dot dot duh, dot dot duh, dot dot duh duh. Instead what we got is over done, needlessly complicated, and obviously done by engineers that haven't spent a day in the field. Hell how many years did they scream "You don't need that!" when it came to NAT and DHCP? I remember the first couple of years they screamed up and down "Just give everything its own public IP!", yeah, like THAT won't be a security nightmare, nope, what could go wrong?
I'm just glad I'm out of corporate IT, I'd hate to try to install this giant clusterfuck onto some large corporation and troubleshoot the mess, what a nightmare! Oh and look at how the other posters argue up and down that humans will have NO problem reading hex just as easily as octets, I bet these same ubernerds walk around with binary watches and wonder why everyone looks at them as weirdos. Whether they choose to accept it or not the brain processes numbers and letters differently and most are MUCH better at counting in decimal numbers, that is just how humans work.
You gonna throw the POTUS in jail? Because they are ALL doing it trying to give the people something, ANYTHING, other than the dismal employment numbers which they know will screw them in November.
As for TFA the only difference it will make is that black hats will be treated like arms dealers, scummy but useful so they'll be able to get by with more shit. I also suspect all those black markets where shit like zero days are sold won't be getting shut down now either.
Not to mention if we got rid of all the damned squatters and campers we'd have years worth of addresses left. The other day I found an old HDD that came out of my old Win98 box and it had my old bookmarks so just for shits and giggles i thought I'd see how many of the old sites still existed, the answer? not much, nearly all were now domain parking spots. Seriously how damned many of those stupid domain parking sites are there now? last figures i saw had less than 35% of IPV4 actually going to a real site, the rest were either old farts that had assloads of class As they were camping on or domain parks.
But they should have made IPV6 backwards compatible and just used numbers instead of hex. We humans just don't think in hex (well most, I'm sure there are a few here that use binary watches but that doesn't mean they are average, even among geeks) and we do much better with small number groupings like phone numbers. Personally i think the switchover is gonna be a giant clusterfuck, with tons of hardware piling up in landfills and home networks getting screwed up or hacked left and right because the tech just isn't there for consumers to make easy home networks with IPV6 like they do with V4. hell have you seen how many V4 only routers are STILL being sold at places like Tiger and Newegg? talk about designed for the dump.
As for SSIDs while there are a ton of free Wifi hotspots and open routers in my area all the SSIDs are boring, just the same old linksys or standard Wxxxx routers. Either nobody knows they can change them or even more likely nobody here cares.
Is Zombocom still around? That would give them a good "WTF?" or of course if you want to irritate the crap out of them you can't go wrong with a classic like badger badger badger. Any of the conspiracy sites would be good for doing a little mind screwing, above top secret or prison planet would do...sigh. there is just so many ways one could have fun with such an idea, i may have to do that one myself!
UEFI GPT is actually pretty simple, its a lot like the old boot sector only with a backup sector and support for large disks. But with virtual box you don't have to worry about partitioning, its treated as a file, no different than say a BD Rip. I wouldn't want to try multibooting it anyway since 1.-Its only a time limited copy and if its like Win 7 you'd have to reinstall when the time runs out, even if you buy it and 2.-Frankly after trying you won't want to buy it anyway!
But the way GPTworks is you have your wrapper for the old boot sector, that lets XP and other non UEFI aware OSes boot, then you have the GPT which is an extended partition table, then you have the error correcting code along with a pointer to the backup in case the original boot sector gets hosed for any reason. Remember how in the old days if track 0 failed you were boned? Not anymore, it'll just work off the backup.
For a nice free tool that works with UEFI and GPT I'd recommend Paragon Partition Manager Free as that's what I use. It supports pretty much any kind of drive, lets you resize existing partitions, its a good tool. I also use their Backup And Recovery Free which I have to say has saved my ass in the past. I was working with a partition when we had a brownout and the system lost power, the partition was fucked but I was able to boot off their recovery CD and restore the OS from backup on a separate drive, it couldn't have been easier to do.
But anyway just use VBox and give it a spin, It'll just treat it as a file so no need to screw with your partitions. Once you get tired of playing with it you just have VBox toss the partition and you can then uninstall VBox no problems. Personally I keep VBox around though as its great for checking out new OSes, I have been using it to play with OpenELEC which looks like it might make a good OS for a cheap HTPC. later bro and sorry about the tune, but who don't love Joel and the bots?
Yeah and I have to say...he's complete full of shit. Do you know how much Cheap Trick gets from iTunes? that would be ZERO, their record label gets IT ALL. Meatloaf actually went BANKRUPT TWICE because the record labels claimed bat Out Of Hell I, the album that holds the top 200 record, made NO MONEY.
I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH ARTISTS but it is NOT ARTISTS that want 150 year plus copyrights and THEY DO NOT PROFIT from those copyrights, its the labels. You think Chuck Berry is still getting paid for Johnny B Good?? Get real, he may get a check for a dollar once a month while it ALL GOES TO THE LABELS.
The labels are leeches and keepers of the gateways, NOTHING MORE. They have been allowed to build illegal cartels like clear channel that control entire areas and this lets them decide who passes and fails, with that decision often based on who got shafted the hardest with their contract. You ever hear the "Eagle Eye Cherry" story? Old Cherry had been on a label and not sold shit for his last 4 albums and then Geffen made a bet. he said "I bet with all the power i have i can take the worst selling artist we have and make him a million seller" and guess who that artist was? Eagle Eye Cherry. Sure enough Geffen flexed his incredible power over mass communication and voila! His next album sold millions.
It is THIS I have a problem with, they have allowed through bribery a handful of media giants to literally control mass communications in this country and by doing so they have made sure that the artists GET FUCKED while they make out like Gods. Read up what Steve Albini says about the labels sometime, he says they make new artists wade through shit just at the promise of a contract which at the end of the day gives them usually less than nothing. I know this is true because some friends of mine signed they sold more than half a million albums. THEY recorded this album on their own, THEY did ALL the promotion...yet the labels handed them a bill for $50,000 for "various promotion expenses" and they didn't see ONE CENT from those half a million sales, not one! They ended up having to break up simply to get out of their contract and now they can't even play those songs anymore without cutting a check to the label who knows owns them completely.
SO FUCK THE LABELS. Go back to the original terms of copyright, in fact I'd argue one 10 year term with one 10 year extension is more than enough. if an artist can't make any money on a song in 20 years he's not gonna, but its not the artists getting that money its the leeches. BTW do you know how much Metallica gets on each $20 album sale? 89c, that's it. After all that ass kissing they don't even get a whole dollar. Fuck those blood sucking leeches!
The link is for the low power e series, so around 55w at full load and idle is less than 30. If all I cared about was low power I think I'd have went for an E350 they max at 18w and idle less than 9w but since they are an out of order CPU and dual cores its got a lot better performance than Atom. But the nice thing about that X4 is you wouldn't need to have some other machine do the ripping or transcoding, slap in a cheap DVD or BD player and let it do the work for you.
I've built a couple of servers using the E series and its actually quite nice for that job, pretty easy to passively cool yet it has enough power that it can do the heavy lifting when needed. But if all it has to do is serve files hell anything can do that, I use an 8 year old Sempron for that job in the shop, quiet as a church mouse but it can still rip a DVD if I needed it to.
Huh, I feel the same about Steam and gaming. There are so many great cheap games and it takes care of the updates and MP stuff so I don't have to hassle with it its worth the money.
What the media cartels need to be worried about is what I've found out from my oldest since he started college. many of the college age kids? Not watching anything. Between social media like FB, gaming, and net surfing they really don't have an interest in watching TV at all. I have to say I noticed the same thing myself which is why I asked, with so much other stuff to do on the net other than the occasional documentary I just have no interest in their crap, especially all that reality garbage they keep chumming out. Now the only time I watch any TV is when I see my parents who seem to watch nothing but CSI and NCIS, I swear you could show those 24/7 and they'd be happy.
What you need to worry about with stuff like Netflix is the ISPs getting nutty with the caps. they are all overselling like crazy and unless you live in one of the places with FIOS good luck on getting them to roll out new lines so I have a feeling the CableCo ISPs especially will start hobbling with worse and worse caps to try to force you into taking their crap whether you like it or not. I know I'm paying for CableTV I'll never use because its cheaper to buy the bundle than it is just to have the cable and VoIP and if you use anyone else's VoIP it counts against the cap, nice.
Dude, you're doing all that...on an Atom? Doesn't it drag ass? if it were me I'd replace that sucky Atom with a cheap Phenom X4e, those support ECC and can be had for $62. Figure in $30 for an AM2+ board and $20 for a 2Gb RAM stick and for less than $115 you'd have a machine that would be a HELL of a lot faster than an Atom at multitasking.
I have to agree with you but just add how come THEIR asses ain't getting busted for false advertising with the trailers? See the trailer for the last airbender? that shit not only ain't in the movie it was NEVER in the movie, being created just to sucker your ass into buying a ticket...WTF? Why the hell didn't they get busted for false advertising? And why in the hell haven't they been busted for getting together and setting prices on movies and media? Don't we have laws against price fixing? and what about Hollywood Accounting? why the fuck haven't they been busted for that bullshit?
Frankly hearing those blood sucking leeches complain about piracy always puts a smile on my face, because its like a criminal bitching that there wasn't anything good in the house they came to rob. the quicker those leeches die out the better off the world will be, all they do is bribe politicians to get new laws while they ignore any that don't make them money. Man what I wouldn't give to have a full blown BSA style audit on their personal homes, how much you want to bet they'd have pirated shit all over the place?
Yeah TVs not dying...that is why even my little old lady customers ask me about how to watch online. maybe if you assholes wouldn't shit out a bazillion commercials into every damned show so that ZERO tension is possible AND fuck up the bottom of the screen with yet MORE commercials and shit then everybody might actually watch again...hmmm?
I have yet to have a single person give me an answer as why copyrights being insane isn't a perfect example that the system is broken. I mean for the love of God most of Disney's early works, made so damned long ago that planes were made of cloth and antibiotics were just a dream are STILL under copyright. Is having an insane copyright length supposed to make Zombie Walt rise from the grave to make more Mickey Mouse shorts?
I say until We, The People actually have a say at the bargaining table that ALL copyrights should frankly be ignored. The current laws were bought by treasonous bribery against the will of the people and like all laws brought about by bribes and backroom deals they should be treated as the illegal acts they are and promptly ignored. Old Valenti said he would get "forever minus a single day" as the term of copyright and damned if he didn't, so until the laws are made sane again one should simply ignore these laws as worthless as the paper they were written on.
I know that's why I occasionally go to Fox news or Above top Secret or watch Glenn beck, because watching crazies is funny. Of course I do the same with MSNBC and HuffPo because they are just as batshit, just a different kind of batshit.
To me the truly crap your pants scary part is that the majority of folks that vote are old and as many know old folks are a hell of a lot more trusting and likely to believe what they see on TV. Hell last poll I saw had nearly 30% of Americans believing that Iraq did 9/11, how many years ago was that bullshit rumor pushed on a couple of networks? it just goes to show that once bullshit gets into people's heads its damned hard to get it out again.
What was that old saying? Tell a truth, half truth, and a lie and they'll believe all three? Well i think the ultra right and left media prove that you don't even need the truth and half truth parts, just make sure the lies reinforce themselves and conform to the viewers preconceived notions and you're all good to go.
Then just put the damned things behind glass so an employee has to fetch it or have them numbered so you can just walk up to the counter and say you need a number 4 or something.
Those things used to drive me up the wall until I was wandering around the local dollar store one day and saw in their knife section this cool looking serrated curved blade that looks kinda like a curved finger. When i asked the guy if there was a purpose for that he said "man i just LOVE that one, check it out" and whipped out an already opened clamshell and showed me how quickly that sucker slices through those damned things. Right then and there about bought four, two for me and a couple for the family. If you buy a lot of electronics you really need one of those blades, it just blows through those clamshells like a knife through hot butter.
So its just as I said then, you'd be better off just turning it off and calling it a day. Frankly i don't know why so many are getting their panties in a twist, its not like Win 8 is gonna be a hit, its a failwhale and everybody knows this.
I've had a Pentium dual running in the shop with Win 8 for customers to play with, know how many that have WANTED Win 8 after playing with it? NONE, zip zero nada squat. Not the old folks, not the workers, hell not even the kids like it, they ALL find it irritating and want to know "How do i turn this off and get to the desktop?". Hell I figured if nobody else would like it kids would, but even tweeners already know Win Desktop and have no desire for a cell phone replacement, that's what their cell phone is for. the closest i got to a "compliment" was this exchange with a sweet LOL: "That's a nice looking cell phone, is that Android? I've heard of that, its supposed to be nice...what do you mean Windows? Windows what? why that is just stupid! Why would I want a cell phone on my computer?" and from the mouth of a LOL comes wisdom.
So there's really no point in getting worked up over this or WinRT locking the boot, Windows has less than 5% of the mobile market and the OEMs sure as shit isn't gonna cripple all their PCs to where they will only run Win 8 thus giving them shitpiles of inventory they can't give away. Win 8 will flop as bad as WinME, even worse than Vista, hopefully Ballmer will be "retired" and then they can bring back Ozzie or another of the old guard to right the ship.
