I can back this up, had a numbnuts that would try to TK me every time I jumped into my fav game for months, got so stupid my own team mates were "Here let me take care of that for you"/kills idiot/, what did I do that caused this braintrust to go mental? He was bragging all over the chat about how badly he was gonna kick our asses...and I punt kicked him like a 30 yard field return, wasn't even close as he was a "spray and pray" type while I actually can hit what I am at. Had the same thing happen several times back in the day when I ran a clan on Mechwarrior, you would get these Shadowcat users that thought they were Billy Badazz and I had my clan adopt the "big blue blanket" strategy of WWII, with the scouts being the picket line, mediums the cruisers, and a couple ultra heavies with long range death dealers as the carriers. We would get death threats and attempted DDoS all the damn time.
So yeah there are some serious whack-a-doodles out there and sadly the whole local/state/fed layout of law enforcement really doesn't work for this kind of thing but considering how power mad the US government has become? I'd be loathe to support anything better as it will quickly be turned into "ZOMFG you didn't use the correct pronoun you nazi!" SJW horseshit, see what is going on in Canada and the UK right now.
I'd say the real problem is they shat all over their ecosystem, peed in their chili if you will, by refusing to service their own products and blocking the others like Rossman that were willing to do the work.
I HAD (key word had) several customers that WERE very loyal to Apple but it was because everything "just worked" together, their iPhone into their Macbook Airs into their iPads...then Apple stopped repairing their Macbooks (Steve Jobs gotta be spinning like a top in his grave over that one) and their iPads, the rep on the new Macbooks is so bad even these non tech savvy users didn't want them, and then it came out they were fucking users by gimping performance on older phones when they were updated....well it don't take that much to REALLY piss off a customer when they've spent 5k+ at your store and can't even get their products serviced so...they are now all using Samsung Galaxy into nice HP business class laptops they had me spec for them that honestly gave them better performance at a cheaper price.
Apple is making a serious fuck up that you are 100% correct on, you HAVE to keep them "in the garden" but the way you do that is by not only making products they want to buy but servicing (or making it easy for third parties to service) the older gear. Remember this gear ain't cheap folks and your non tech types? Can get attached to their gear. Apple saying "fuck you we won't fix it" while simultaneously blocking others from fixing it? Well like I said my customers USED to buy all their gear from Apple, and being doctors they had plenty of money to buy the nicest gear, hell one even had her entire office running on iPads...now they are on new Surface units.
Sadly the entire "Linux code is vetted" meme is nothing but a giant case of the is ought problem because you assume the code OUGHT to have been vetted but you have absolutely no proof that the complete codebase IS vetted.
Look at the Bash bug that was there for years,go to US-CERT and see how many serious vulnerabilities exist even right now. we know for a fact that in the past bad actors have tried to get into places where they can inject nasty code...do you know FOR SURE that the person/s controlling the code for say the default music player on your distro is trustworthy? When was the last time the code for all the little boring bits and bobs required to make a Linux distro been actually audited? My bet is if you look at the code repo for those boring bits nobody thinks about are being seen and handled ONLY by the actual devs of that bit...are you 100% sure none of them are bad actors?
Sure having access to the code CAN help if someone finds out there is a bug or bad actor...after the fact, but assuming that just because the code is out there someone is spending the hundreds to thousands of hours on their own time to check every single bit with all the changes being constantly done to the huge amount of code? Yeah I have a bridge you might be interested in.
Uhhh...might want to reconsider friend, at least until they get the serious issues with the memory worked out. Look up "Nvidia GDDR 6 Failure" on YouTube and you'll see they are having some pretty damn high failure rates, turns out if you get cards that have memory made by one manufacturer (Micron IIRC) your card has a good chance of buying the farm rather quickly. Some of the big reviewers even ended up with cards that crapped out before they could finish their benchmarks so...yeah might want to hold off until they get the bugs out.
Uhhh...he BLOCKED the PSU fan, you kinda need that if you don't want the PSU to blow, he also poured so much thermal compound on the CPU it was squirting onto the socket so...yeah it would have cooked the box, most likely either popping the PSU (if he was lucky, no guarantee that when it blew it wouldn't damage the rest of the system) and fried the CPU when the thermal goop shorted out the pins but whether that cooked or not would depend on if there was metal in the compound but I missed what the specific brand was so cannot confirm that.
You are forgetting to add the real toxic shit with this whole thing, which was Vox tried to claim making fun of the video is racist because apparently a black guy royally fucking up a PC build cannot be made fun of cuz black.
Anybody who has actually seen the video can tell ya this wasn't just "Oh he put in a fan wrong", this guy had NO CLUE what he was doing and if you would have followed his instructions? You most likely would have burned up your PC, yes its THAT badly done. And it just shows how sad and pathetic the USA is becoming when a major corp can scream "Thats raciss!" over someone making fun of what was so damn obviously a dumbass that has no idea what they are doing trying to give instructions, I mean good lord it was as bad as that gun safety vid where the cop shot himself in the foot, but the media has by and large kept their mouth shut over Vox throwing the race card.
I do have to say thank you to all the corps though, as its pretty obvious piracy is gonna make a HUGE comeback thanks to the asshat corps wanting ALL of the money or none of the money making watching legal content a giant clusterfuck and as someone who thinks copyrights have been pushed waaaay beyond original intent? I'm all for the masses giving as little money to these assholes as possible.
Sorry but horseshit, its cheaper because its more shelf stable and thus they aren't paying for food that goes in the dumpster. Ask your local grocer how much of that "healthy fresh food" ends up going into the garbage and be ready for a shock, its quite a lot and guess who pays for that? YOU DO in the form of higher prices.
Now personally I'm all for more healthy ways of preserving food, GMOs designed to last longer, irradiating to kill bacteria, promoting more healthy ways of making things shelf stable like pickling, but at least two of those methods have serious scare mongers out there making sure people are afraid of it so they end up having to dump a bunch of salt and preservatives into food to make them last because people here in the states don't seem to have an issue with tons of salt and chemicals while they have a fit if you say GMO or irradiating.
Finally I'd add most of the dollar stores? About a hell of a lot more than food. I shop at the local Dollar Tree all the time, am I buying food there? Hell no, I like to be able to taste something other than salt, but for things like aspirin, spare batteries for the remote, pens and paper and a ton of other assorted little things? Dollar stores are great for those. And you can't even claim anybody is buying at ours for lack of choice as both locations in my town are literally across the street from Walmart supercenters where you can get all the fruits and veggies that you want so anybody buying food there means they just like that stuff, its their money so who am I to judge?
Look at the end of the day getting rid of a Dollar store isn't gonna magically make people eat any better, any more than making booze illegal stopped people from drinking or the drug war stopped people from getting high, hell my local Walmart Market has tons of fresh produce and you still see people walking right past those for the frozen pizzas and the cookies. Folks are gonna buy what they want to buy and if there is a market for fresh goods in those areas? Someone will take that business, but my guess is there isn't any there because there are too few eating healthy and a bunch that love everything drowned in sugar and salt.
Sigh...Pale Moon got rid of NoScript because they were having issues with NoScript's ABE support and from what I've read when they went to the NoScript dev and told them the issue? He did the Ghostbusters 2016 bird bit and made it pretty clear he had exactly zero fucks to give about any issues Pale Moon might be having. If you want to keep trying to make it work as it degrades over time? More power to ya but the PM devs simply routed around the problem by giving us uBlock Origin Updater that installs uBlock Origin and keeps it up to date for you, no muss no fuss and from what I've read the uBlock team is more than happy to work on issues that may crop up with PM support.
BTW if you ever need a Chromium or newer Firefox based browser without all the extra service crap? Try Comodo Dragon and IceDragon, the only service they install is the update service (which you can easily opt out of at install by simply picking portable version) and the few add ons it comes with (like the media downloader and social media share button) can be tossed with just a right click if you don't want 'em but I personally find to be quit handy. Their UI has been pretty static for at least a couple years now so if you are like me and hate the way Chrome and FF are constantly mucking with things its a nice change of pace.
Considering that thanks to our busted AF border pretty much any kid in the USA can get crack, meth, and heroin less than 20 minutes from their house? Yeah really not so worried about one puffing on an ecig, nope.
BTW if the local teens are any indication (have a grandson that vapes, call 'em "smoky" as you can find him and his buds by the fog bank) the vast majority of 'em? Yeah using no nic, in fact talking to my local vape shop their #1 sellers by a huge margin is no nic, which I assume is relatives getting it for teens as most of the adults I know are on 3mg or 6mg nic.
Dude if you like that kind of stuff? Go watch a Neil Breen movie, I swear he is the new Ed Wood. You can tell he is just trying his little heart out to be a good movie maker (hell he even does his own craft services where he makes all the food for the crew, hell of a nice guy) but he is just fricking TERRIBLE at it ROFL! We are talking The Room and Troll 2 levels of "so bad its great" failure LOL.
But sadly the razorblade commercial wasn't that, it was just a bunch of racist sexist SJW virtue signaling, if they wanted to make sure any man with a brain no longer bought their products? Mission accomplished, I USED to always buy Mach 3, now I'm buying Schick.
New scandals happen and the people of today have the attention span of hamsters thanks to being glued to screens 24/7. Hey it would be nice if douches like the Walkers got ran out on a rail but you are lucky if you can get the average 20 something to remember something for a week, much less long term.
Uhhh people got royally pissed at Nostalgia Critic because he was covering for a pedo rapist that used his position on the channel to groom young fans to abuse. Sorry but you can understand why people would be more than a bit miffed when he covered for the scumbag and even had most of the channel (who didn't know about the sicko's proclivities) record videos talking about how tragic it was when said scumbag committed suicide when the whole time Doug and Rob Walker knew he most likely killed himself because he figured he was about to get popped for being a fucking rapist pedo.
For those that want to know the whole story just look up "Justin Carmichael Channel Awesome" and you'll find plenty of vids talking about how Rob and Doug Walker covered shit up knowing he was a sexual predator. So not shit they got slammed for awhile, covering up for a predator to protect your channel? Is some pretty sleazy shit.
I actually seek out the truly disliked just to see "Well HOW shitty is it?"...but then again I enjoyed The Room and the works of the great artist of awful Neil Breen so I'm always on the lookout for "so bad its good".
But that razorblade commercial simply made sure I would NEVER buy another Mach 3 ever again, because that was racist and sexist as fuck and I don't support racist sexist companies.
Oh Hai SJW! Did I trigger you? Do you need a safe space? Because you obviously cannot read or else you would have noticed NOBODY BUT YOU said anything about Trump (your boogey man, a source of endless amusement for those of us not infected by your sickness as he makes you turn into screaming man babies) or Putin (which is extra giggle worthy as you sound like a 1950s brainwashed idiot with your "its the commies!" shtick) or the Chinese (better watch your tongue SJW, or the others will call you raciss), nope ALL OF THAT is "in your heead, in your heeead, zombie zombie zombie"
Nope the only thing that was talked about, which apparently you are incapable of understanding unless CNN spells it out to you in itty bitty words,is that no models we have ever used can predict more than a decade or so because they all assume a static unchanging world with a static unchanging tech and that hasn't existed since...when was the first Muslim invasion of Europe again? Oh look at who I'm asking, you probably have no clue of anything earlier than the birth of your god Stalin ROFL!
I don't have a recovery partition, I use Paragon Backup & Recovery. This way I always have a current disc image and can just press F11 and restore from image if I was to ever have anything go wrong...which I never have since witching from 7 to 8.1. With 7 a flaky driver could trash it, with 8.1 even when I had a GPU dying it was still able to bring up the desktop no problemo.
And the retards calling Secure Boot evil are all kinds of stupid, I can turn SB on, turn it off, no different than a Firewall or anything else on the PC. Now if we were talking about how Win 10 likes to just say "fuck you we know better" and reset settings to give MSFT control on updates? I'd agree 110%, that is why I refuse to run that POS, not gonna have to play whack-a-mole with settings every patch and hope I don't miss one of a billion buttons to deal with the MSFT phone home horseshit.
But hey if they wanna rock like its 1999 and have an outdated and rapidly losing support OS? Let em rot, I won't feel anymore sorry for them than those suckers using reg hacks to try to hang onto that P4 running XP. Win 7 is old, its not getting any better, just let it die already. Hopefully by the 2023 EOL of 8.1 either Nutella will get the axe and we get someone who knows how to make an actual OS or Linux gets its collective shit together so that you can actually update the damn thing without it getting as flaky as Win98, either way will be fine by me.
Not to mention even trying to guess what is gonna happen 2 decades from now based on the tech of today? Is as much bullshit as the "flying cars and everyone having their own reactors" predictions of the 1950s!
Lets just look at the way things were when I was a kid...cars ran on leaded gas, acid rain was a serious issue, "home computers" ran on DIP switches and blinking lights, the oil crisis was a thing, and scientists back then were predicting another ice age. If you looked at what things were like then and tried to predict 50 years into the future? The world would have been a frozen cross between Mad Max and Logan's Run, with LED displays, landscape trashed by acid rain and freezing temps while scientists worked at banks of tape drives to try to solve the problems.
The problem with looking forward is we have NO clue what kind of tech is gonna show up in 5 years, much less in 50. Nobody in the 70s saw computers more powerful than a mainframe that could fit in your shirt pocket, that could connect to any other computer on the planet without wires, electric cars with built in radar, having access to any movie or TV show that ever existed on demand, being able to just push a button and hop into a realistic 3d world with players from several different continents, hell back then a Mb of RAM would have taken a serious bite out of your wallet and CPUs that could do thousands of Mhz and render 3d worlds that could fit on a desk, much less in your pocket? You must be high to think that would ever be possible!
So yeah...complete and total bullshit because these things always assume the world is gonna remain static, no new tech is gonna be invented, and everything will stay exactly the same...that hasn't been true for nearly 2 centuries now and I seriously doubt as we discover more about how the quantum world works, new smart materials and innovations in everything from robotics to manufacturing that our world 50 years from now is gonna resemble anything like what we have now, hell if anything I wouldn't be surprised if the big issue of the time is how to grow humans in vats as the whole population has holo-addiction and is too busy being their own gods in their own virtual worlds to give a shit about actually interacting with each other.
Because I have yet to see Windows "built in security software" do diddly damn shit when it comes to zero days and drive by malware on sites like Facebook? I use Avast for my customers that are FB junkies and believe me it helps a great deal as Windows defender has exactly ZERO fucks to give about malware on Facebook, it will happily ignore when a user clicks a link from a "friend" that takes them to a page filled with browser exploits, it will not care in the slightest.
Windows Defender is fine for your smart users, the kind using Privacy Badger and ABP or Ublock Origin to filter malware via ads and who aren't likely to click on any links sent to them by friends that may have been compromised, but for Joe and Jane Average? Yeah you kinda need that extra layer that AV like Avast provides because Windows Defender just royally sucks balls when it comes to blocking browser based malware.
Yeah growing up with a whole family of smokers (and I can't even blame them as when they started doctors were selling smokes on TV) made it pretty much inevitable that I would pick it up, and I've lost relatives to cancer and to COPD...I'd take cancer any day of the week, watching them fight for every breath as they feel like they are drowning? Not a good way o go.
I'm sorry to hear about your mom, being there for the passing of both my parents I know how bad those last days can be. I'm glad to hear that most of your family has given it up and I can only say keep at your dad, he probably just hasn't found the right device. I'd say give him an eLeaf Pico Kit with a bottle of Cowboy which tastes like a Marlboro with a high nic level (I started at 20, 20-24 is recommended for a pack a day or heavier smoker) and a couple of spare batteries.
Its what I've been using for a couple years now and its the closest I've come to "just pull a cig out of the pack". The coils last for up to a month of heavy vaping (and are dirt cheap, you can buy a dozen for like $20 on eBay) and all I have to do is fill it up once a day and swap out the battery for a fresh one and thats it. No muss, no futzing, and its small enough he can just pop it in a shirt pocket like he does his smokes.
I just hope you can get him to give it up, maybe if I could have gotten my dad to give his up a few years earlier he would still be here.
I still use a EEE PC netbook for work, its running Linux Lite with 8Gb of RAM and 320Gb of HDD...honestly never had storage be an issue, I can always stream video if I want to watch something and you don't need a ton of space to look up parts or test networks.
And I gotta agree with you 110% friend, as I haven't had an issue with storage on my smartphone since like Android 2 (I'm not gonna keep up with all those damn snack names like Gingerbread and Oreo or whatever) the problems have always been battery life being shit once you start doing real work and the UI being crap for anything more complicated than some Fruit Ninja style game. If I'm actually doing work? Its not gonna be on a phone, it'll be my netbook or desktop where I have actual programs built for a keyboard and mouse and enough power I can get shit done without worried I'm gonna be left without a way to get calls.
I thought for a bit there during Android 4 things were gonna get better as the phone I had at the time had a slide out keyboard and for just a few bucks you could get a new back for it with a double sized battery (remember those? I miss those) but of course the OEM never put out any updates and soon everyone was copying Crapple and making sliver phones with weaksauce batteries and that dream died a quick death, now all my phone does besides call and text is play a time waster or watch some YouTube, certainly not gonna try to do real work on it and watch my battery meter run to empty quicker than a Caddy goes through gas.
After losing both my father and mother to COPD from smoking in less than a year my youngest gifted me with an ecig kit, saying "We've had enough funerals in this family, I don't want to have to bury you too", that was 6 years ago and to this day I've been cigarette free which for a pack and a half a day smoker? Is saying something.
I still vape but I went from 20mg all the way down to 3mg and I feel a hell of a lot better. I don't get winded like I used to, I don't wake up every morning hacking my brains out, the closest thing I have to a "downside" these days is the wife using me as an air freshener, telling me something like "My SUV is kinda stuffy so you are driving...and bring the one that smells like blueberries" LOL. Hell of a lot nicer than that nasty dingy smell of old cigarette smoke.
That was already disproven (including one of the researchers involved in the study actually condemning it) as the way they got those results was by taking a discontinued $3 4w ecig top (the kind you used to find in gas stations around 2012 which nobody has used in ages) and slapping it on a mech mod (something that on average costs over $100 and is used by the kind of hardcore vapers that would never use a $3 top) so they could pump over 80w into a 4w tank.
Did they detect formaldehyde? Sure when you pump 80w into a 4w device you are gonna detect all kinds of things as it literally melts, in fact several YouTubers tried to recreate the "experiment" but couldn't even get the device to hit as it was burning up too quick. BTW do you know who funded the study? Your good friends at RJ Reynolds.
But feel free to look up "ecig formaldehyde" on YouTube as you will find many trying to recreate the results and you can watch exactly what happens when you pump 80w+ into a 4w piece of plastic with a wire as small as a human hair, what comes out certainly isn't vapor. Luckily its pretty much physically impossible to do unless you use exotic hardware like a mech mod because all devices that have been made in the last 5 years or so have automatic detection of wattage so they simply will not let you run too much power into a low power tank, it just won't fire and will give you an error code.
Actually the only reason I bought it (along with several other trashy titles) was they had a big tub in the middle of the store piled high with cheapo PC titles. This is a concept IDK why online retailers don't do, make a big bright "bargain bin" where they can just dump all kinds of titles for you to root through.
Sure Steam has a below $5 section but its hidden at the bottom and is filled with DLC to titles you don't own so completely pointless and a PITA whereas store like Wally World learned ages ago big fat bargain bins keep people in their store and while they are there you have a better chance of selling them other merch. If the online stores offered a more enjoyable bargain bin along with Humble Bundle type deals where you can get multiple titles for one price? I'd be a lot more likely to shop there, as it is now I rarely shop most online shops except to buy a single title I already want and that is it, no extras.
Platform DRM doesn't have shit to do with it buddy, it has to do with the fact console owners? Kinda tarded. You can go to YouTube right now and see dozens of vids about how you can grab a $50 office box, slap in a 1030 or rx460 and voila! You'll have a system with better frame rates and cheaper games than any of the consoles but apparently "sticking a card in a slot is haaaard". I should know as IDK how many times I've been paid to literally do just that, take some office box they have and stuff a card into it.
But thanks to actual competition PC gamers have never had it so good, you have Steam and Epic and Origin and GOG and Humble Bundles and a bazillion other outlets so PC game prices drop like a stone compared to their console counterparts and unlike consoles PC games can be played online for free for decades (hell I can fire up Team Fortress Classic or AVP 2K and be playing a match in seconds and thanks to GOG Galaxy playing old games online has never been simpler) but sadly society has dumbed down to the point anything more complex than "stick disc in slot" is beyond a huge chunk of our population.
Because I used to really support wikipedia and did my part, fixing spelling and repairing citations...until I ran into one of the deletionists and found out how many whack-a-doodles had high level control in that org.
That is when I did a little digging and from the Scientologist that was controlling the LRH page to the rabid fanbois controlling the pages of their TV shows I found quite a bit on there that was nothing but spin where anything that wasn't all puppies and roses was quickly deleted by those controlling the pages and if you tried to point out to higher ups the actual facts, complete with a dozen sources from a dozen places (including in the case of entertainment from the actual actors and writers of the piece) that "Yeah this is what actually happened"? You would be quickly shut down and blocked because that page "belonged" to one of the inner circle.
So these days if Wiki says the sky is blue I'd want a second opinion, I look at them no different than HuffyPo or FauxNews when it comes to having actual facts because...well you just never know when someone in the inner circle has "claimed" a page and is spinning like a record all over it. Its a damn shame as the original concept was quite sound, a giant crowd sourced encyclopedia where everyone could pool their collected knowledge for the betterment of all, but sadly it got quickly taken over by nasty people.
I can back this up, had a numbnuts that would try to TK me every time I jumped into my fav game for months, got so stupid my own team mates were "Here let me take care of that for you" /kills idiot/, what did I do that caused this braintrust to go mental? He was bragging all over the chat about how badly he was gonna kick our asses...and I punt kicked him like a 30 yard field return, wasn't even close as he was a "spray and pray" type while I actually can hit what I am at. Had the same thing happen several times back in the day when I ran a clan on Mechwarrior, you would get these Shadowcat users that thought they were Billy Badazz and I had my clan adopt the "big blue blanket" strategy of WWII, with the scouts being the picket line, mediums the cruisers, and a couple ultra heavies with long range death dealers as the carriers. It didn't have shit to do with stories or where to go with the series, its the fact that Disney is starting their own streaming service and removing all Disney and Marvel content from Netflix so they would be giving money to the company trying to put them out of business.
