Seriously try 8.1 and Win 7 will feel as low as Win98 running on a 386. Boot times on Win 7 with my current system (FX8320e with 16gb of RAM and 240gb SSD) was around 20 seconds until it was fully loaded, on Win 8.1? Its about 4 seconds! Its literally so fast I never see the Win 8.1 boot screen, it goes from POST to the desktop so the only time I ever see the boot screen is running in safe mode to run DDU when installing a new graphics driver.
I ran in dual boot to compare the two and after 3 days I just tossed win 7, the difference in speed and responsiveness? Like night and day, 8.1 really blows the doors off Win 7.
Actually having the disc don't mean shit anymore friend. I bought Kane & Lynch II (what can I say I enjoy "so bad its good" entertainment like "The Room" and it was only $4) brand new and when I put in the disc? All it did was call the Steam home page and give you the Steam Code for the game!
So yeah discs don't mean shit anymore, its one of the reasons why if there is a choice I use GOG as at least there I can just download the installer and keep it on a backup drive, as buying a box only to get a "disc" that just calls Steam is beyond pointless.
You should try Win 8.1 with ClassicShell, you can have the nice UI like Win 7 (or even go back to a Win2K style minimalist GUI) but with the faster boot, better SSD support, and nicer tools like the better Task Manager.
I too used to be a "Everything after 7 is garbage" guy and HATED the Win 8 "supersized smartphone" UI but when I got a customer who had a lappy that couldn't run anything older than 8 and said "I can't stand this, please fix it!" I tried several shells and ClassicShell plus 8.1? Damn nice OS, probably the best Workstation OS I've used since WinXP X64. Its fast, its updates are rock solid (instead of the alpha quality crap on Win10) and it gets out of the way and "just works".

At the worst we are looking at an object from very VERY far away from our system, farther than we could likely travel within the next several hundred years, so it would be worth checking out simply to see if things evolve different in different parts of the galaxy or whether it has the same materials that you would find close to home. Maybe it has a material in its composition that allows it to be effected by dark energy that simply hasn't occurred here, we do not know so if nothing else its worth checking out for that reason alone.
But at best maybe we'll get lucky and its some alien race's version of Voyager or Pioneer, something they used to check out their outer system that was then sent out into the great unknown when its primary mission was complete.If that was the case it would be priceless even if its tech is no better or even more primitive than our current tech as it would allow us to learn about another race we will never be able to reach and would prove once and for all this blue marble is one of many and that others are out there trying to grow and expand their knowledge of the universe around them just as we are.

You should try 8.1 Pro with ClassicShell, its got the faster speed and better SSD support of 10, takes less than 2 minutes to turn off the very limited telemetry (because MSFT didn't think they were Google when Win 8 came out) and most importantly patches for Win 8.1 has been rock solid than the buggy as fuck Windows 10.Did I mention that thanks to ClassicShell it has a nice Win 7 UI while still having the better under the hood improvements of 8.1 like the better task manager and crazy fast boot times?
I've been running it for a couple of years now and its frankly been the most rock solid and hassle free OS since WinXP X64, just a great workstation OS that gets out of your way and does what you expect it to which is run your programs reliably without the bullshit.

Personally I'm sticking with 8.1 Pro plus ClassicShell, not because I can't take the 30 seconds to go "clicky clicky" on Win 10 but because 8.1 with ClassicShell gives me the nice UI of 7 with the speed and better SSD support of 10 with updates that are rock solid instead of alpha quality. Everything is fast, everything just works, and the only packets leaving my PC other than the ones I personally send are things I have authorized like my AV and program updates.
You should really try it, purrs like a kitten and has been the most hassle free OS I've seen since XP X64 aka Win2K3 Workstation, just a great OS for getting your work done with the least amount of BS.
But for how long? I gave up on running Linux on my laptop because you could never tell from one update to the next which parts would work and which wouldn't. One update my broadcom wireless would work fine, next nada, one patch my APU worked great, next YouTube felt like trying to watch video on a Via Chrome from 1997, and the Asmedia USB 3 was as unpredictable as the weather.
Linux is great on servers because server hardware is old and barebone, no wireless, if it even has a GPU or sound its some ancient chip that has been in service for ages and is as common as dirt, its really not that hard to support servers as its about as bog standard as bog standard can be. With laptops and desktops where there is just a constant stream of new chipsets, iGPUs and APUs, a bazillion wireless variants? Its damn hard to support that much gear reliably and consistently and frankly with Linux the money just isn't there as the big corps like Red Hat have zero fucks to give about desktop support.
So sorry but with laptops and desktops you are just better off with Windows or ChromeOS where the driver support and stability is just better, there just isn't enough manpower dedicated to all the funky chips to make Linux a good choice for many.
But if you paid $60 for an R9380x or $100 for an RX480....are you REALLY gonna care? Lets say the card lasts 2 years, which considering its been undervolted and babied is really not a stretch (as I've had cards that were rode HARD that lasted nearly 5, AMD cards can take a beating) so you paid $30 a year for the 2 years of use of the R8 380x or $50 a year for the RX480...that is less than the cost of a triple a game a year...yeah really not gonna care if it doesn't last 5-7 years.
If you buy used you are always gonna be taking a chance it might have less life, but at prices THIS cheap I'd say the risk is worth it and I'd much rather have a miner card over a gamer's card because the miners frankly took better care of their gear than the average gamer.
Nope, actually just the opposite. When you game with a GPU you are having a LOT of thermal cycling, card gets really hot during intense gameplay, card cools down when you aren't playing, and that wears them out.
With the miners though you do NOT want a bunch of cycling as that sucks power so what they would often do is undervolt the card to cut down on power usage (thus maximizing profits) and would keep them at a constant load and thus at the same temp which doesn't wear them out like a lot of cycling does.
Now that the market has gone bust you can find a ton of R9380x and RX480s for quite cheap, been grabbing the 380x cards for like $60 a pop, and the miner cards have been absolutely immaculate and not had the slightest bit of issue with them thanks to how well they babied the cards. Remember mining is all about maximizing profit and just slamming the cards full bore like you would if you were plowing through a game with the settings maxed out? Cost too much electricity to make that a smart move for generating profit from those cards.
Actually I've found its a HELL of a lot easier to pick the good sellers from the crap on eBay which is why I switched back to using it over Amazon. After all with eBay you are only dealing with one seller, not a warehouse that has a shitload of the "same" product in a bin so whether you get a real of fake is a literally crapshoot and its really not hard to do a little reading of the seller feedback on eBay to see which are legit and who isn't.
If you see a seller who has tons of honest reviews of their sales and the only real downvotes are from morons who don't read the description, IE "I wanted a red one and got a black one" or "this won't fit my PC" (well no shit you just bought a socket 775 cooler for an i7 dumbass) then odds are they are legit. I've had too many cases where the seller is legit on Amazon but you buy 3 of the same product and they pulled 1 fake and 2 legit from the bin, Amazon has become a total roulette spin on a lot of stuff.
So if given the choice I'm going eBay, as with a little due diligence its not hard to find great sellers but thanks to Amazon's warehouse buying from them is like a box of chocolates where a third of them are turdballs, not only do you not know what you are gonna get but you have a chance to get nothing but shit.

Some offered cheaper prices, some offered more services like web hosting and file storage, but because there was COMPETITION none of them could really turn the screws to the customer as you could just walk across the street and go to someone else!
The US taxpayer paid paid over 200 BILLION dollars for nationwide services we did NOT get so just like anyone else who gets paid and rips off the customer we should take them to court and they can either give us what we paid for or we seize the last mile. They want monopolies? They can have LIMITED monopolies for each new home they bring 100mbps Internet to for a set number of years, everywhere else? Any ISP can use those lines while paying a RAND fee for upkeep and maintenance so that we all get plenty of choice in provider again.
The answer to this is not NN because that isn't gonna mean shit if you don't do anything about the duopoly (or in many areas monopoly) controlling the last mile as without competition they have no reason to improve service or give a flying fuck. Make it easier for towns to start their own broadband, open up the last mile, and you'll see all this nastiness dry up and blow away like a fart in the breeze because if your ISP starts acting like a douche? You have Rose Tico whose whole job seems to be to bring in a completely pointless PETA message and to screw Finn out of actually getting to be anything more than a pathetic comic relief. Which is rather insulting that Lando in the 80s got to be a hero and the only black guy in the new trilogy is a pathetic bumbling sidekick but I guess being a guy trumps his being black in the Oppression Olympics. Hell even Phasma which was built up to be this bad ass evil super trooper got stuffed on a bus and run off screen because God Forbid she actually be able to fight as gasp! Look at Voyager and Pioneer, their power systems will be long dead by the time they reach another system but unless they smash into something eventually they will go through some other system just as this thing is going through ours.
Now personally I don't think it was "sent" by anyone as I've seen no evidence that that is the case, doesn't mean we shouldn't send a probe to its surface to check it out. At the worst we are looking at an object from very VERY far away from our system, farther than we could likely travel within the next several hundred years, so it would be worth checking out simply to see if things evolve different in different parts of the galaxy or whether it has the same materials that you would find close to home. Maybe it has a material in its composition that allows it to be effected by dark energy that simply hasn't occurred here, we do not know so if nothing else its worth checking out for that reason alone.
But at best maybe we'll get lucky and its some alien race's version of Voyager or Pioneer, something they used to check out their outer system that was then sent out into the great unknown when its primary mission was complete.If that was the case it would be priceless even if its tech is no better or even more primitive than our current tech as it would allow us to learn about another race we will never be able to reach and would prove once and for all this blue marble is one of many and that others are out there trying to grow and expand their knowledge of the universe around them just as we are.
So I'd say its worth sending a probe to because even with the worst scenario we are still getting a chance to gather valuable data that would be simply impossible for us to gather due to the vast distances this object has traveled. Who knows what it has picked up along the way, it may have samples from dozens of asteroids from dozens of systems, possibly even microorganisms or fossils from planetary debris it may have come in contact with. The possibility of gathering such a vast amount of information in one location IMHO makes it just to valuable to pass up, whether it was sent by another race or is just a lone wanderer from a far flung system somewhere.

You should try 8.1 Pro with ClassicShell, its got the faster speed and better SSD support of 10, takes less than 2 minutes to turn off the very limited telemetry (because MSFT didn't think they were Google when Win 8 came out) and most importantly patches for Win 8.1 has been rock solid than the buggy as fuck Windows 10.Did I mention that thanks to ClassicShell it has a nice Win 7 UI while still having the better under the hood improvements of 8.1 like the better task manager and crazy fast boot times?
I've been running it for a couple of years now and its frankly been the most rock solid and hassle free OS since WinXP X64, just a great workstation OS that gets out of your way and does what you expect it to which is run your programs reliably without the bullshit.

Uhhhh you DO know that it takes less than 30 seconds to turn off the crapware in 10...right? They even have free programs like "Shutup10" that will do it for you, its literally "clicky clicky" simple.
Personally I'm sticking with 8.1 Pro plus ClassicShell, not because I can't take the 30 seconds to go "clicky clicky" on Win 10 but because 8.1 with ClassicShell gives me the nice UI of 7 with the speed and better SSD support of 10 with updates that are rock solid instead of alpha quality. Everything is fast, everything just works, and the only packets leaving my PC other than the ones I personally send are things I have authorized like my AV and program updates.
You should really try it, purrs like a kitten and has been the most hassle free OS I've seen since XP X64 aka Win2K3 Workstation, just a great OS for getting your work done with the least amount of BS.
But for how long? I gave up on running Linux on my laptop because you could never tell from one update to the next which parts would work and which wouldn't. One update my broadcom wireless would work fine, next nada, one patch my APU worked great, next YouTube felt like trying to watch video on a Via Chrome from 1997, and the Asmedia USB 3 was as unpredictable as the weather.
Linux is great on servers because server hardware is old and barebone, no wireless, if it even has a GPU or sound its some ancient chip that has been in service for ages and is as common as dirt, its really not that hard to support servers as its about as bog standard as bog standard can be. With laptops and desktops where there is just a constant stream of new chipsets, iGPUs and APUs, a bazillion wireless variants? Its damn hard to support that much gear reliably and consistently and frankly with Linux the money just isn't there as the big corps like Red Hat have zero fucks to give about desktop support.
So sorry but with laptops and desktops you are just better off with Windows or ChromeOS where the driver support and stability is just better, there just isn't enough manpower dedicated to all the funky chips to make Linux a good choice for many.
But if you paid $60 for an R9380x or $100 for an RX480....are you REALLY gonna care? Lets say the card lasts 2 years, which considering its been undervolted and babied is really not a stretch (as I've had cards that were rode HARD that lasted nearly 5, AMD cards can take a beating) so you paid $30 a year for the 2 years of use of the R8 380x or $50 a year for the RX480...that is less than the cost of a triple a game a year...yeah really not gonna care if it doesn't last 5-7 years.
If you buy used you are always gonna be taking a chance it might have less life, but at prices THIS cheap I'd say the risk is worth it and I'd much rather have a miner card over a gamer's card because the miners frankly took better care of their gear than the average gamer.
Nope, actually just the opposite. When you game with a GPU you are having a LOT of thermal cycling, card gets really hot during intense gameplay, card cools down when you aren't playing, and that wears them out.
With the miners though you do NOT want a bunch of cycling as that sucks power so what they would often do is undervolt the card to cut down on power usage (thus maximizing profits) and would keep them at a constant load and thus at the same temp which doesn't wear them out like a lot of cycling does.
Now that the market has gone bust you can find a ton of R9380x and RX480s for quite cheap, been grabbing the 380x cards for like $60 a pop, and the miner cards have been absolutely immaculate and not had the slightest bit of issue with them thanks to how well they babied the cards. Remember mining is all about maximizing profit and just slamming the cards full bore like you would if you were plowing through a game with the settings maxed out? Cost too much electricity to make that a smart move for generating profit from those cards.
Actually I've found its a HELL of a lot easier to pick the good sellers from the crap on eBay which is why I switched back to using it over Amazon. After all with eBay you are only dealing with one seller, not a warehouse that has a shitload of the "same" product in a bin so whether you get a real of fake is a literally crapshoot and its really not hard to do a little reading of the seller feedback on eBay to see which are legit and who isn't.
If you see a seller who has tons of honest reviews of their sales and the only real downvotes are from morons who don't read the description, IE "I wanted a red one and got a black one" or "this won't fit my PC" (well no shit you just bought a socket 775 cooler for an i7 dumbass) then odds are they are legit. I've had too many cases where the seller is legit on Amazon but you buy 3 of the same product and they pulled 1 fake and 2 legit from the bin, Amazon has become a total roulette spin on a lot of stuff.
So if given the choice I'm going eBay, as with a little due diligence its not hard to find great sellers but thanks to Amazon's warehouse buying from them is like a box of chocolates where a third of them are turdballs, not only do you not know what you are gonna get but you have a chance to get nothing but shit.

If you want to fix this problem? Open up the last mile to competition so that everyone can have multiple choices in ISPs again! People seem to forget when Ma Bell was broken up everyone had just tons of choices in ISPs, even in my small town we had a half a dozen ISPs to choose from. Some offered cheaper prices, some offered more services like web hosting and file storage, but because there was COMPETITION none of them could really turn the screws to the customer as you could just walk across the street and go to someone else!
The US taxpayer paid paid over 200 BILLION dollars for nationwide services we did NOT get so just like anyone else who gets paid and rips off the customer we should take them to court and they can either give us what we paid for or we seize the last mile. They want monopolies? They can have LIMITED monopolies for each new home they bring 100mbps Internet to for a set number of years, everywhere else? Any ISP can use those lines while paying a RAND fee for upkeep and maintenance so that we all get plenty of choice in provider again.
The answer to this is not NN because that isn't gonna mean shit if you don't do anything about the duopoly (or in many areas monopoly) controlling the last mile as without competition they have no reason to improve service or give a flying fuck. Make it easier for towns to start their own broadband, open up the last mile, and you'll see all this nastiness dry up and blow away like a fart in the breeze because if your ISP starts acting like a douche? Just walk across the street and go somewhere else!
