This was a great site; I'm surprised more Slashdotters aren't familiar with it. I've downloaded plenty of flight sim expansion stuff from it -- in the best tradition of open source the site consisted free downloads contributed by the fs community. It's very upsetting that all that work is gone, and I blame whoever did it, not the site owners. Otherwise it is like blaming the architects of the WTS for not making the towers plane-proof.

  2. Re:strategy on Git Adoption Soaring; Are There Good Migration Strategies? · · Score: 1

I migrated from SVN (actually SVK) to git; I used git-svn initially to keep my centralized svn repository up to date, but eventually I did too many merges of too many local branches and now I can't dcommit back to svn. But... I like git so much that I chucked svn and now use GitHub as my central repository.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but apparently it is a problem with ReiserFS and the Beagle search program. I turned off Beagle and it stopped freezing. Other option is to change to a different FS like ext3. I would check and see if you have ReiserFS (this is especially likely if you upgraded from earlier Suse, as Reiser was default).

I loved playing around with Locksmith. I remember a real sense of accomplishment when I copied Wizardry successfully. The trick back then was direct control of the disk drive mechanism by the computer, resulting in half-tracks, spiral-tracks, changes in speed, etc. Copying those disks was as much an art as a science.

  9. Re:*High Prices* for Academic Journals are Obsolet on Are Academic Journals Obsolete? · · Score: 1

As a former professor (cardiac electrophysiology) I agree that the major problem with the journal system is the cost of retrieving the data. There are dozens of journals relevant to my specialty and the cost to subscribe to each one would be prohibitive. On average we are talking around $300 per year per journal. The cost is purely the cost of publication: peer reviewers are not paid a cent for their reviews. Most journals have online editions, but you don't have the option to buy just the online version. You have to pay full price and be a party to the destruction of numerous trees. But it is the free flow of ideas that is at stake. Trying to look up a recent article online and not being able to read it because it you don't subscribe to the obscure journal it was printed in is a bit of a shock for someone attuned to the open source philosophy of sharing of information. People profiteering from other people's research and inhibiting information flow that might actually save a patient's life is not right. Just as research is funded for the public good, so should publication of that research.

I have listened to Imus for years. He is constantly parodying all aspects of modern so-called culture and he has never been afraid to be politically incorrect. He cuts politicians down to size and mocks everyone. In the context of his show, his remarks were a parody of hip-hop speech, he even used a hip-hop type accent. So he was making fun of black speech, especially how black women are referred to in rap music. Taken out of context, he suddenly becomes this monstrous racist, which is ridiculous. It is like condemning Carroll O'Connor for racism for his lines as Archie Bunker. But ... so easy for every one to take the "high moral ground" and condemn him, when most of those condemning him, even someone like Al Sharpton, knew exactly what his schtick was, and that this was all very unfair. At least we realize that our supposed "free press" is just a tool of their corporate sponsors, and that what we hear is either censored by companies like Sprint and Staples, or inhibited by fear of being fired after a 30 year career for uttering one unpopular phrase. Also note that Imus apologized and it was quite sincere. This was not good enough for Sharpton and Jackson, who despite their roles as christian ministers apparently are not the most forgiving people in the world. The only people who actually could claim to be hurt by his remark, the Rutgers BB team, accepted his apology. So, fired anyway, another great lesson from this incident to pass on to our children. Finally, Imus raised millions of dollars for kids with cancer, for sudden infant death syndrome research, and he and his wife spend each summer at his ranch providing some happiness for kids dying with terminal cancer. Many of these kids of course are minorities. So nothing good has come out of this at all. I too have written to MSNBC and CBS (without any response) and I too will not watch/listen to them, or use any more of those sponsors who were behind this miserable sacrifice on the altar of political correctness.
