Here's a little known fact. The lyrics to Strawberry Fields, by the Beatles, are:
Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hungabout
    Strawberry Fields forever

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn't matter much to me
Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hungabout
    Strawberry Fields forever

No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low
That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right, that is I think it's not too bad

Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hungabout
    Strawberry Fields forever

Always, no sometimes, think it's me, but you know I know when it's a dream
I think I know I mean a "Yes" but it's all wrong, that is I think I disagree

Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hungabout
    Strawberry Fields forever
    Strawberry Fields forever
    Strawberry Fields forever

I haven't asked for permission to post this fact, nor should I have to.

If that were true, every kid in America would be listening to the Boredoms. Most people are voracious listeners, and will listen to and like just about everything they hear. Especially during their formative teen years. If you had taken it upon yourself to teach your kids how to apprciate music, they would have figured out how to find good music by now.

My friend's teen has recently gotten herself into Ikue Mori, a terrific Japanese avant garde drummer. She introduced her friends to it at a party, and now they're combing the Tzadik website looking for more music to explore.

I don't know if OS X is infinitely better than Windows, but I agree that the UI inconsistency doesn't bother me. Frankly, as long as all my favorite keyboard shortcuts work and all the buttons are in the same general region across releases, I'll be fine. I use one application that doesn't conform to the standard keyboard shortcuts (say, apple-w to close a window and apple-m to minimize) and it pisses me off to no end. Everything else is golden.

I just made a soup, but it's not very good. I chopped up an onion and a half. I started by frying up some garlic and special seasonings and a handful of chopped onions in a little bit of olive oil. Then I threw in the rest of the onion and added two cups of water. I also added about four tablespoons of a nice whole wheat flour and a dash of lime juice. I put the lid on the pressure cooker and let it simmer on low. A half hour later, I ended up with an acidic gravy-like substance. It seems like it has potential as the base for another food, but I'm not sure what I could make with it. Does anybody have any ideas?

Yes, we private individuals who create things do want free access. Thanks for putting words into our mouths. We want free access because popular culture is a derivative and toned-down version of subculture. There is nothing pejorative about this claim. Quite simply, in anthropological terms, a group sets itself off as being distinct from the rest of culture. The culture then appropriates the group's icons and turns it into its own. New subcultures are generated as a reaction to this appropriation. This happens constantly. These subcultures consistently and constantly give their culture away. Turn about is fair play, even if it isn't legal.

For example, have you ever heard of the "Amen break"? It is a drum beat first used in a song called "Amen Brother" by the Winstons. It was sampled by some of the earliest electronic musicians (back when sampling was fair use) and became the basis of most modern electronic music. The Amen break is now used in like 30% of all television commercials. The Winstons have never recieved royalties for this use, even though sampling is no longer considered fair use.

Modern culture needs people who can create without artistic and legal fetters. If you get rid of these people, you will quickly see culture decay into boring (and unprofitable) conformity. Frankly, it's on its way already.

You shouldn't usually need to deal with deb files directly. That's what apt-get is for. To install, remove, and remove software and config files:
    apt-get install <package name>
    apt-get remove <package name>
    apt-get remove --purge <package name>
You can get the package name from the Ubuntu website. You can also update your database of known packages with
    apt-get update
though you might want to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file first. If you need to install software that isn't in the Ubuntu repositories, download the .deb file and type:
    dpkg -i <file name>
dpkg will check to see that you fulfill all the package's dependencies and install the software if you do.
