Thank you, this was my point exactly. Sometimes less is more, now to be completely transparent, I use Joomla, a lot. I also try to shore up security on quite a few installations. Often I find the objectives of a person using Joomla are just as easily obtained making a good old fasioned HTML page with tables... and in some cases, even poorly thought out frames...

But, to wit, this book does serve a function. Please also not I did not us an !

  6. There is documentation and then... on How Do You Document Technical Procedures? · · Score: 0

...There is documentation. One of the most important things in dealing as a large company is to work in making sure everyone can get accurate information everyone needs. One of the most daunting tasks is sorting and maintaining this information as everyone has different levels of proficiency... so, in truth having several different copies of the same documentation geared towards different aspects of the business is very helpful.

How does one explain an OC-192 line from a Marketing perspective? How does one explain QoS routing to Level 1 tech support? How does one explain FCC rules to Sales People and still make that information understandable by customers who have a rough time programming their VCR? These are issues faced in putting together a documentation project for a corporation. Less is never more for documentation and targeted, simplified versions of highly detailed technical procedures are also valuable...

The trick is putting together a system that does all of this and is easy to update everything that needs updating.

There is currently a case in front of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court brought by the Juvenile Law Center of Philadelphia surrounding Juveniles sentenced by these two judges who did not have and were not permitted adequate legal representation. This is a far bigger situation then just this one person sentenced for a MySpace flame, other kids were given harsh sentences above and beyond prosecutor recommendations in appropriate sentencing. This is really a big deal for our area, and the Feds are still digging for more.

  11. Consider this on Combating Harassing Use of Mosquito Noise Device? · · Score: 1

I really have no idea where in the country this author lives, but I will say that the mosquitoes in the rural northeast United States have been exceptionally bad of late. I wonder if this man is legitamately trying to keep these insects away from him.

I personally have found that even tiki-torches and Citronella candles to be marginally effective at best and catching mosquitoes attracted to the light at worst.

Maybe there is something more effective for what he is trying to use it for. Is there a proven way to effectively and consistently eliminate mosquitoes without containing oneself within a screened cage, annoying others with buzzing sounds or doing bad things to the environment?

  13. SAMBA! netatalk! SAMBA! on Home Network Data Storage Device · · Score: 1

I used to be a live alone geek, back when I first started reading /. I loved to mess around with Linux boxes and play with my NeXT. But, eventually, even geeks get lonely, and I married a wonderful woman who just happened to be a Mac fan. On top of this, I don't play well with Wine, but I love to play computer games, which makes me run Windows too (Yeah, yeah, I know.) We take way too many pictures with a digital camera of our boy, and needed a central place to store them, I like to edit them with gimp, while my wife likes to edit them with Photoshop on her MAC, we needed a central place to store them, and music, and e-mail and backups... and... and... and... So what did I do? I bought a vintage Dell with a top-of-the-line Pentium 2 233. I slapped in a pair of 80g hard drives and ran Samba as well as netatalk on my vintage 7.2 SuSE. No muss no fuss and everyone's happy, I even have the 4 year old storing pictures he makes in his own folder. A happy family story, brought to you by Samba, SuSE, and netatalk.

  14. The evils of Cell Phone use on Technology-Based Social Change · · Score: 3, Funny

I used to rail against the evils of cell phone use, from 1998 to present as I worked at various ISPs and ISP like entities, everyone around me was showing up with new pretty cell phones that lit up pretty colors and played deceptively good midi ringtones. Constantly these phones were getting smaller, thinner, and louder. And now, I have one. I can blame marriage, I can blame my wife, I can even blame my stepchild. But at the end of the day, it was the hamster dance in Midi that finally sold me.

  15. Sharing ye olde Cable Modem. on Caveats In Reselling DSL Bandwidth To Neighbors? · · Score: 2, Funny

There was this guy I used to work with who got his cablemodem from the company we both worked for. He decided to share his cablemodem with his whole building, which was CLEARLY against our Aacceptable Use Policy. Every other person in the building has this cable company. This guy was so smart he put flyers all over the building telling everyone how to get free internet through wireless. With over 80 units in his building, one might think he might have shown some restraint.

Well some Cable Company Wire Technicians found his flyer and tracked down his apartment and he was fired. Smooth move exlax!

In this case though, as long as YOUR allowed to do it by the ISP in question, nobody else should bother you.
