"Just think of the day when you talk to a younger person at a quiet public place, and talk about the "good old days" where it was allowed for people to listen to music. Just imagine the look on their face."

It's funny that you mention this I recently read about a group in Canada know as SOCAN. They charge an annual fee to stores playing music even if the artists the store is playing are not a part of SOCAN. Talk about extortion!

    Here's the story.

  4. Re:Freedom of Choice on The Choice Between DRM and Security · · Score: 1

You made some interesting points but I have to disagree with this statement.

"In the end, we'll see less choice of top-notch studio-produced music, especially for music that can't support itself via live performance."

The exact opposite is true. It is much easier and cheaper now to produce music, especially electronic or studio-enhanced music, than ever before. What hasn't changed, and has only gotten more expensive, is marketing. I think what we'll see is fewer over-hyped mega acts because they will become too expensive to market. There will however be no lack of excellent music produced. Finding new artists is becoming easier as well. Through social networking sites like last.fm and pandora.com, as well as the many online radio stations and online publications like pitchfork, new acts can spread through word of mouth very fast. The only thing changing here is the **AA's strangle hold on what they decide we should hear.

  5. Re:Bush & Co. should not be above the law on Bush Backed Spying On Americans · · Score: 3, Informative
I've got a good quote from Noam Chomsky regarding Bush's supposed "diminished mental capacity"...

"Both political parties and the media are far to the right of the general population on a whole host of issues. And the population is just disorganized, atomized... And that's why the media and campaigns keep away from (political) issues. They know that on issues, they're going to lose people. So therefore you have... George Bush... this pampered kid who came from a rich family and went to prep school and an elite university. And you have to present him as an ordinary guy who makes grammatical errors, which I'm sure he's trained to make--he didn't talk that way at Yale--and a fake Texas twang, and he's off to his ranch to cut brush or something. It's like a toothpaste ad. And I think a lot of people know it."

Try Kerio. They make a "free for home use" version and the footprint is pretty small. I think they got bought out by someone too but they have vowed to keep the personal home firewall version going.

  7. Re:But how are the drivers? on ATI All-In-Wonder X1800 XL Review · · Score: 1

I'm running an AIW X800 (before that i had the AIW 9700) and updating just the display driver has never given me any problems. Here's my process:

    1. Download the "Display Driver, Control Panel*, WDM Driver" integrated package. *the new "Control Centre" is crap and I don't recommend it.
    2. Uninstall the "Control Panel" (no reboot) then uninstall the "Display Drivers" (reboot).
    3. Install the Driver Package and reboot when completed. (for me this package only asks to reboot after installing all three drivers)

This ONLY works for upgrading your display driver. (ie. moving from CATALYST 5.x to 5.y) Whenever they decide to release a new version Multimedia Centre/DVD Decoder etc. then you have to do the full uninstall, driver cleaner, re-install procedure. Hope this works for you.
