"An ugly programming language"? PHP syntatically follows the same style as Perl and C, so you're basically saying all three are ugly? Or maybe you're saying that only about PHP because it makes you look so cool? Seriously now, if you wanna criticize a programming language do so by using technical arguments, this is not a beauty pageant.

Anything called "Undefeatable" or any "definitive terms", like "Unbreakable", "Definitive", "Ultimate", etc... are just marketing terms and must be taken as such. Technically speaking is very hard to believe that such thing exists.

It's the good ol' crackers x hackers conflict: you create a lock, they drill a hole, you fix the hole, they drill in a different location, and so on...

  9. HAH! on Microsoft Says Other OSes Should Imitate UAC · · Score: 1

Hilarious! Vista's UAC, as pretty much everything MS has done to "improve security" is ridiculous. It's that good old politic of asking "You are trying to run this program as an Administrator. Are you sure?" and the possible answers: "YES, I AM THE ADMINISTRATOR BECAUSE I'M LOGGED IN AS SUCH, YOU DUMB, FOOLISH OS" or "No, I've double clicked an icon just for fun".

It's so pathetic! I wonder when MS will implement something like this "A virus is about to thrash your hard drive. Would you alike to allow it?"

    Sad, just sad.

  12. No, at least NOT YET on People Don't Hate to Make Desktop Apps, Do They? · · Score: 1

The web has much to evolve before it can live up to all this hype. Yeah, this may sound weird coming from a web developer, but I'm a careful one.

As for desktop apps, they are, still, faster and more reliable than their web counterparts, not to mention that a whole cultural change must occur so web apps can really prevail.

I've done some desktop development - only to amuse myself, really (so I'm not the best man to write statements about it) but I'll take my chances: the amount of code needed to transform a shell app into a desktop one is huge, so I really don't see any advantages on it, being a geek.

OTOH, web app interface development seems to be a lot easier and shorter than QT, GTK, etc...

  13. Nice movement on Dell Opens a Poll On Linux Options · · Score: 1

I see a lot of complaining here, but I believe this is a great move. Dell is a huge, millionaire company and is showing real attention to Linux users. Just remember that a while ago Dell wasn't considering Linux anymore and you'll see the value of this recent attitude from them.

Nice one for Dell. Hope we really see this becoming a reality.

  14. Not always cryptic on Minimal Perl for Unix and Linux People · · Score: 1

[...] it has a reputation for taking an excessive cryptic nature [...]
Actually this is a common mistake associated with Perl. The language can be as readable as PHP (believe me, Perl was my first language and I work with PHP since 2002), but it can become cryptic as well. It all depends on the coding style of the author.

Writing a Perl script is fairly easy. Modifying another programmer's Perl script can be tough.

[...] We had to create Word and PowerPoint documents and run Microsoft-like applications because the folks we were working with at Dell were using Microsoft.[...]
This is not something that you can blame Linux for. Linux doesn't have to be compatible with MS applications, although it's obviously an interesting thing, and yet it does a pretty good job.

Yes, it has several compatibility problems, but to write an article with such heavy statements is quite absurd.

To this guy the business world is "MS world". This is the mistake, not using this or that or trying this or that. If everyone starts thinking like this Linux will become just a pathetic "Windows wannabe".

I'd love to see what would happen if everyone was using Linux and he tried to "be part of the shiny big business world blah blah blah" with a Windows 3.11 for Workgroups in his laptop.

Conclusion? This is just Yet Another Poor Article Depicting Linux.
