This is the kind of stuff that will ruin the RIAA, they are poisoning their water hole. If the RIAA doesn't offer the artists anything other than lawsuits and slavery they will find a different way. Obviously, the artists can handle a certain amount of contractual servitude so long as they get something out of it, but when the RIAA begins feeding on it's upcoming artists there is no longer an incentive to sign, in fact there is a strong incentive to do something different. I feel bad for DJ Drama and hope he comes out of this ok, but I think this provides a very clear line for ways of distributing your art, you can offer it on the Internet on your own terms, or you can jump through hoops for a record label (hoping you don't get eaten by the sharks). The RIAA is forcing artists into the same space
You'll notice that every nation on the Internet produces spam. Interestingly, in the US the cities that would be most affected by a "block by geography" policy would be LA, Seatle, Dallas, and New York. Spam originates in all nations that have Internet and is most densely located in areas that are most populated. Your policy may work on a case by case basis, but if someone were to block all emails I get from New York I think my boss would be pretty pissed. Korea I can live without, but none of my spam seems to come from there, it comes from client addresses that are scraped by US companies.
Of course you're right, I think people will ultimately be amazed at how fast we burn stuff in our cars. Bio-diesel by itself will not replace fossil fuel, but sure will help.
This is a question of timeservers and use of mac addresses. If AOL doesn't have an effective timeserver and/or doesn't have the customer's mac address in the appropriate record it should be thrown out.
An effective local timeserver will compare records from several timeservers through gps and on the Internet. The local timeserver will then be used to distribute the appropriate time on the network.
Of all the things AOL screws up, I don't think their lawyers would let them get away with botching this, if I was on the defense though I would definitely bring it up.
Couldn't agree more. I'd love to see some other company like wal-mart try to sue some chick with MS for stealing some CD's. And yes I do beleive the defendants state of health does matter primarily because a medical condition will interfere with your ability to defend yourself in court. That and the fact that I have never seen "RIAA sues white middle-class male with decent legal defense".
IANAL, but my lawyer told me that everyone lies in court, so there's not much case for pursuing purjery. At the same time though, your lawyer should not make shit up at all on your behalf or otherwise.
I find it annoying when people think Novel only does Linux now. They have tons of other products that are not free as in spirit or beer.
That's exactly what I thought...
but Novell has had plenty of time to state that the IP deal doesn't cover Open Source Software. I honestly thought they would be working out a commercial Netware that perfectly integrated Linux networks with Windows networks. I thought they would be working on revitalising Netware as *the* logical system for integrated environments.
Apparantly, Novell..
Doesn't know what they're doing with the IP agreement.
Is letting Microsoft say whatever they want about the IP agreement, without saying too much themselves
Was planning on using the IP for Netware, but thought M$ fud might help sales
Essentially, though I think Novell doesn't know what the hell they are doing right now.
And frankly, they have had ample time to put some spine in to their end of the deal, they haven't done so. Novell hasn't so, much as addressed the fact that this agreement is designed to solve an underlying problem with software patents throughout the industry.
It's hardly a "from scratch" situation for normal users. Normal users will adapt to the new system the quickest. They'll complain the most, but they will actually have the least difficulty. Actually, quite a bit of skills will transfer over nicely, people will complain, but the actual differences are moot.
The hardest parts to switch will be in the server room where your database setup depends on functions unique to MS SQL server and other such problems. Then again these switches will be implemented by people who are expected to implement "from scratch" solutions.
I do understand that these training costs are going to be higher than normal, but in the long run I think they are hardly viable arguments. What if for instance they had never switched over to computers because of the training costs?
I'm sick of hearing about retraining as being a reason not to change to Linux. The facts are that you're going to have to retrain everyone when you're forced to upgrade anyways. The big difference being that your Linux rollout will cost less, and provide future savings in the form of not having to upgrade and retrain for the next big change in an MS Office menu.
In order to combat FOSS Microsoft has set aside it's shared source licenses and opted for the shareware route. Eventually, all Microsoft products will be available free for download if you agree to reveal your age, gender, and income bracket.
The new machine doesn't belong in front of a seven eleven, it belongs in front of one of those ritzy beverly hills grocery stores, right next to a less sophisticated machine.
In other news the Marine Corps http://www.usmc.mil/ is expected to sue http://www.marine-electronics.net/ Marine-Electronics for using the word "Marine" and logos that relate to water. The Marine corps had sated in an earlier suit that Marine Electronics was not allowed to enter the water.
I don't think you get it. Our government has weapons of mass destruction, and weapons of mass distraction, and tasers, rubber bullets that can be fired by snipers, laws that make it illegal to protest on weekdays, and a government where we can't win for voting. We protest (illegally) and the news doesn't cover it. I'm of the opinion that only riots will get news coverage. Riots would require a catalyst (such as boiling water), to be sparked, and I wouldn't be surprised if troops would be deployed (at this point). We need strong leaders, strong leaders need strong followers, and strong, dedicated, intelligent followers need information. The public isn't being informed at all, Rush Limbaugh is actually considered an accurate news source, leading many political debates among the laymen to end with "you're an unpatriotic, girly man, who's afraid of war".
It's Sick, it's shameful, and it's the current state of affairs.
Seeing as how most "Normal" search engines use their own search filters, raw urls and raw search terms will represent a rather inaccurate set of search results. For instance searching for "tits" should return results for the "blue tit" a type of bird with safe search on*. Turn safe searches off and it's a different ballgame.
*Oddly, enough this used to work on google, but no longer does, nowadays google just filters out "tits" all together. I'm still curious about how the DOJ is going to compensate for the major search engines filtering.
As a technology minded parent I think google is doing precisely the right thing. I am afraid that one day my kids might act irresponsibly on the Internet, but it's my job to correct and guide my children's behavior. At the same time I am also concerned about the rights my children will enjoy on the Internet in the future. I haven't read COPA but, if just gets the nudity and sex off the sites home page I don't see anything wrong with it, but the way the Department of Justice is collecting evidence is outrageous. They would not be able to do this with say medical records and that I think is easily an equivalent privacy issue.
My four year old daughter uses KDE and Windows 98. She doesn't read much yet so she needs the interface to be consistant. She has been on her computer since she was two and she is getting into using the application menus as her needs are becoming more sophisticated. Her biggest problem is the inconsistancies in KDE's application menus. She expects to go to File > New Game, in each one; that works well in windows and only haphazardly in KDE as many applications do not even have a "File" menu.
Usability between the two platforms has been effectively, the same for my daughter's needs. She prefers Xpaint over M$paint because of the power (she can make tie die effects in Xpaint), regardless of the usability issues. All her Disney and Educational software runs in Windows, but Windows crashes more often (this really pisses her off more than anything).
Her skillset in Linux is equal to her skillset in Windows 98; she is a four year old desktop user in either environment, she prefers power over simplicity, enjoys commercial software that is directed toward her demographic, and really freaks out when the computer does something she doesn't understand.
The only new user interface I really want is to use a game controller as a mouse. You know so I can browse the Internet with all the mojo of a FPS fanatic and avoid that terrible hollowed feeling I've got in my right wrist.
Me too, I was just thinking that there really isn't anything left to say about SCO being full of BS.

I was just about to post the same sort of thing. It was a good story when i rtfa (~3) four years ago.
Perpetual shadow is going to be on the North or South side of the building. Depending on your hemisphere.
Go to Mountain View California. There it is more ubiquitous than electricity. Who did that again? Oh, that's right it was Google.
Of course you're right, I think people will ultimately be amazed at how fast we burn stuff in our cars. Bio-diesel by itself will not replace fossil fuel, but sure will help.
Yea that may be true, but if it's *cleaner* it still costs less.

(not only funny but, insightful too)
Nowadays, the army would more than likely open fire after the bottles were thrown. Todays peacekeepers are cowards.

Maybe it's a conspiracy. Give massive amounts of marketing bs for M$ to chase after, convincing them it's time to upgrade their browser. Woooot!
