    That by pure volume, there are WAY more Android devices out there than IOS devices. So the PBS arguments are bovine effluent. Look, YouTube works fine on my Android phone. Why not PBS?

    And the fact that the processor on the Surface CANNOT run the software that works on Windows 8 PC's. And if you surf around the net you see that Windows 8 uptakes on laptops and desktops isn't happening as quickly as Microsoft wished.

    That the pbx and carrier level gear that they make is built to last 30 years or more. Kind of hard to up-sell when what's in place will provide decent service for that amount of time.

    And having administered quite a few at&t/Lucent PBX's like Definity and Prologix, I can tell you I've NEVER seen one fail. Some have been in place for the better part of three decades now and they are still going strong.

    And look at differences in the reproductive organs of men and women. Testes and Ovaries - just small deviations create each, and of course location.

    I was thinking the same thought. Combine this with the autonomous drones being tested by the military and it is a scary future. Just make sure it has a very visible OFF switch on it.

    Ditch the provided power supply and use a precision supply. Secondly, though shalt patch the firmware on a regular basis. It's how I got my WRT54G. It was a clients and they just bought a new one and gave me this one. My WAP54G died so I downloaded the latest firmware for the WRT54G and it worked flawlessly, has been doing so for years.

    In most states there are type codes for the different kinds of plates issued. Here in RI I know passenger is 01, amateur radio is 18, and so on. It looks like one of the databases is missing the type info.

    MySQL isn't bad. It's replication features are REALLY nice. And it does scale well. But the thing is, Oracle effectively owns it and is trying to kill it.

    MariaDB is the replacement. Haven't had any experience with that one though.

    Yup - agreed on that. Or Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Nissan could start designing and building their own hyper-milers. Nissan is already ahead of the game with the Leaf. But the latter suffers from a miles between charge deficit. The battery technology needs to get better over time.

    But for 260+ MPG I don't give a crap. I've driven rear drive cars with all the weight up front. You just have to know how to handle the car. Know that in slippery conditions you MUST reduce speed and try not to stop if you don't have to do so.

    That actually publishing a physical copy of the book is hideously expensive. An ebook not so much. Doesn't require the infrastructure to do it and Amazon realizes this.

    I almost refuse to pay more than $9 for an ebook. That doesn't mean there are occasional exceptions. And I can't stand authors who won't make their books available in digital form.

    And the other thing to remember - these are more likely APCO P25 standard trunked systems and Motorola sold those to virtually every single municipality out there. Here in our city there's the trunked radio but then there's also a MESH network for law enforcement only.

    So effectively you could keep a clone on ice and when the time comes just transplant your head onto the clones body. Pretty cool!

    But I'd prefer learning how to fix the issues that would lead to the necessity of a complete head transplant.

    The energy density of electricity is far greater than that of even gasoline. You can do more with electrical power than you can with that gallon of gasoline.

    Sure at the current moment there may be an environmental penalty but that's in the battery manufacturing process. Over time I expect that will be mitigated.

    But you have to ask yourself - what are the environmental issues when you weigh an electric vehicle against a fossil fuel burning vehicle? Big differences.

    The IEEE piece is nothing but a smash job, more than likely sponsored by manufacturers or big oil or both.

    Add to this - when the I.T. unit as a whole implements a project management system do not come in and abolish that system. It is what keeps the unit on target for projects.

    Ran into this with a change of administration in a state office. I'd helped the director get buy in from the upper admin with the former - they bought in too. Helped us prioritize, etc. The new administration was fucking clueless. Their Admin director was a bitch. She would do things like yell at I.T. folks out in front of everyone, so of course she made I.T.'s shit list.

    My first brush with PDP-11's was a PDP-11/44. I learned BASIC, PL/I and COBOL on that sucker. Then I got hooked up with a retro computing group and what do they have but a plethora of PDP hardware. It's all based on things called Flip Chips. Tiny boards with discrete components on them.

    So diagnosis and repair is pretty easy so long as the parts exist.

    Switching to Linux. I've been looking at a new machine and they almost invariably have Windows 8. How anyone believe a tablet based OS is going to be effective on a standard laptop or desktop machine I don't know. Windows 8 is meant for a touch screen, not a mouse.

    So I may just say fuck it, throw Ubuntu on a machine and kiss MS Office goodbye.
