    Meanwhile a bunch of poor slashdot users, living in momma's basement are "yuk-yuking" over these stupid rich folls and their crappy Vista.

    -Written on Vista-SP1 on a *slow* Celeron laptop, while I'm concurrently doing all kinds of FTPs, Flash-compiles and chatting on MSN - +some JPG editing.
    Oh yeah- I'm also watching a DVD-movie on the 2nd screen. LOL! Don't ask me to try THIS on Ubuntu!

    Yeah I know what you mean (Seriously, this time!)

    I've always appreciated reading a real paper newspaper, or a book or magazine late at night in bed.
    Not sure why; it's probably the tactile sensation as you describe. Or perhaps the softness of the appearance, which a laptop monitor still cannot seen to deliver.
    Somehow the finger-tips hitting on the keyboard or the stroke of the mouse late at night doesn't have the same appeal. (no double-entendres please)
    I've downloaded a few books from the Gutenberg project, including Joyce's Ulysses, which I had never read.
    Well it's been whirring around on my hard disk(s) for three or four years now and I STILL haven't read it!
    But it's very handy for looking up a phrase or passage in SECONDS, when I wish to appear intellectual online. Ahh.. the power of pretentiousness!
    I've been working in computers for more than forty years and have now been retired from the office without ever seeing it go paperless, Though goodness knows I tried my best the last 20 years.
    But for the life of me, I do NOT understand the value of printed tech reference manuals about computer topics. They invariably become obsolescent within a year anyhow. Mine were all thrown out years ago.
    But for tenured twits, I suppose books lend some authority when neatly lined up, gathering dust on the professors' shelves.
    Studying computer operation is kinda like turning off your lightbulbs and reading a manual about lightbulb operation by candlelight.
    Helloo! Get with the program, Luddites!
    When it comes to ANY computer work, I do ALL my research and cutnpaste / composing stuff ONLINE.

    Google's usefulness aside, I like having a dead-tree reference sitting on my shelf for ease of use.

    Yeah, I know what you mean-
    When my computer is down, I like to grab an Abacus, or least my sliderule. It's a pretty handy substitute.
    All this hypertext nonsense pales in comparison to looking up on that shelf, browsing for the right book, thumbing through the index and looking at page after page to find the right topic! So much quicker!
    If only they would do away with hypertext! I could probably code HTML much more quickly then with my handy 63 lb. of manuals on my desk!
    Lessee now... where did I leave my pencil and coding pad?...
    And oh, yes! Mustn't forget my handy flowchart template!

    When a search is done using the keyword "aqk", my website is ALWAYS shown at the top.
    And Yahoo as well.

    All they could find was a nasty ol' computer virus and some silly Pakistani Nuclear physicist who apparently sells blueprints for atomic weapons to Iran and Al-Queerduh or whatever!

    without undue hassle and was initially very impressed. He ended up having problems with wireless network card drivers, but before then he discovered the compiz window/eye-candy manager and the whole cube desktop thing, as well as dual monitor and window tiling features. He......who to my knowledge has never even written a Hello World program (though he ha......seen Macs, and though he's impressed, the price is off putting. Anyway he is now using Vista, and has found its visual effects fairly pleasing. But, he still wants to go back to Ubuntu, due in no small part to the compiz cube, which he considers superior. In fact, even his girlfriend actually prefers Ubuntu. ...... wide appeal of Hardy.

    In short, I remain shocked, bewildered and pleasantly bemused ..... It is not an exaggeration to state that Aunt Tillie can use and actually enjoy Ubuntu Hardy, as though as it might be for us to accept it.

    I have been running dual and TRIPLE screens on XP and Vista.
    So far all I can get with Ubuntub 8.04 is a "cloned" screen on my Celeron Laptop.
    I'm currently booted from Vista now, as it offers me an expanded desktop over two screens, which Ubuntu cannot seem to do.
    And don't ask me (OR your revered Aunt Tillie) to do a "sudo apt gibberish -fyou" to possibly solve this problem.
    Oh yeah- my Atheros wifi still doesn't work with Hardyharhar Heron, not to mention 7.10 Warty wotever...
    Don't reply to me here. Take it up with your Aunt Tillie.

    Why couldn't we just "seed" the 50Km-high atmosphere with some Earth organisms- maybe some Algae or some of those Sulphuric-Acid-eating worms in the deep ocean?
    After a couple of years (or maybe a coupla months) Venus will come around to OUR way of living.
    And a few high-atmosphere balloon colonies of ours, designed by Virgin Galactic, and ... its a GO!
    I will bring my own Pinoqachole and even brew it on Venus!
    Sorry for the extant Venusian life.. but I doubt there is any.

    I burn CDs (audio & MP3/ogg etc) all the time, as well as DVDs (both Mpeg4 and the standard VOB, using basic Windows (W2000 and Vista) software.
    I am STILL trying to get Ubuntu 8.04 (horny heffalump or wotever) to recognize my DVD burner and give me some sort of disc output. Grrr..
    This is typed using Firefox & Win2000. (Sorry - I'm too lazy to boot my Vista laptop)
