You *can* do this in the US with certain phones/carriers. My Immix Wireless Galaxy S is unlocked out of the box and I can insert any sim and go. Now my neighbors super plain Jane at&t phone won't accept my immix sim as the phone is sim locked.

Same with my old Verizon Blackberry Storm. I had to call Verizon and tell them I was traveling to Europe and being provided a sim for them to unlock the phone.. which I then promptly moved to immix wireless using an immix sim card

Do what we did.. Use OpenDirectory. We had it connect to and push Active Directory info from our Windows Server so both the PC side of things and the Mac side of things were all mapped and setup on boot.

As for deploying packages, we used BigFix.. but after issues (such as the one Firefox update we pushed that caused issues for end users), we experimented with Munki and found it to be a great tool to push updates. I even wrote a script to automatically do all of the manual stuff you had to do to setup the program package file to work with the munki update system (though I still had one bug.. it worked at the time I left but have since lost my copy of the script). Best part is, the updates show up just like normal OS X updates and don't require a root login to apply (whoever boots the machine just hits OK).

Also, DeployStudio is a great way to image machines or have other tools setup should shit hit the fan on the Mac. Just network boot and you'll have access to tools, images if it needs to be re-images, etc.

All it all the setup worked out pretty well

  5. XServes on Apple Forcing IT Shops To 'Adapt Or Die' · · Score: 1

I think it all started with the XServes. Yeah, yeah... maybe they weren't an IT hit, but in the College of Education at Penn State, we used them on the Mac side of things. There was 8 at the time I left, some doing OpenDirectory just pushing the ActiveDirectory information from the Windows Server box, as well as hosting Mac software packages, scripts, etc for remote deployments/installs... and others doing tasks such as DeployStudio for quick imagine considering we had over 200 Mac laptops the students used while doing student teaching and other tasks. Each had to be re-imaged on return, and we had different packages for the various models of the MacBooks, iBooks, etc, etc over the years. Some images were even setup to push Mac OS X with bootcamp'ed Windows 7 all in one shot. Extremely handy.

But alas, Apple pulled the plug on the XServes, and replaced them with Mac Mini's and the like. Not too surprising they are doing this too.

    11.01 @ 139 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXZ0pYuVffg

Done at Beaver Springs Dragway.. *HORRIBLE TRACK* (It doesn't have the slight down then up of most tracks, it's just UP from start to finish.. need to use the e-brake to keep from rolling off the line it's that bad). In both you can hear the spinning issue because of how they have the water boxes setup.. they're setup for RWD cars as you have to pull into the lane, then BACK into the box, unlike other tracks I've been to where you drive in and out of the box on the way to the lines. Although, I understand why they do it that way.. so the street racers who don't need/want the water box aren't forced to hit it, and it doesn't leave the water trails from their rear tires.

Anyhow, those runs were done full interior, A/C, all that *still intact*. No longer allowed to run until there's a cage in there, but my brother wanted one made to fit around the interior. In the end, he sold off of the 1600cc injectors he was running for 1000 (iirc) so he could dial it down some and get away with pump gas instead of 110 so he could drive it on the street again.

Ethanol has a lower energy potential than gasoline, so any time you replace some of the gas with ethanol you're going to get reduced energy output which will equate to less MPG (since you're burning the same amount of fuel but producing less energy).

The only way to compensate for that is to advance the timing and/or increase the compression (or if turbo'ed, increase the boost) since ethanol has a higher octane rating which allows you to do any of those to help increase the energy returns from burning it vs straight gasoline.

Basically this is no real worry if you're using WPA (or WEP even though it does apply here) because WPA is just as flawed as WPS, or maybe even more so since higher traffic = less time to crack when it comes to WPA (and WEP). So the only real concern is for those using WPA2
