    If by may not be stellar, you mean something dragged from the deepest bowels of hell, then sure. And who says government will be a monopoly? And if it is, it seems as though the places that want to do it are places you sacred private companies don't want to touch with a very long pole. And, by the way, back on your private companies are always better, my 20+ years in the high tech industry chortles. I watched Prime, Digital, Data General and Wang all willfully destroy themselves. I watched Nortel go from a 120,000 employee company an afterthought in the blink of an eye. There's nothing magic about private companies.

    The difference you're missing is that Google, and even Amazon -produce- a ton of technology, do research, and create actually products. They don't simply use technology (largely built by other people) to create a glorified Want Advertiser.

    First two programming jobs I had we're Pascal. I'm sure it's used far less now, but /something/ is keeping Delphi alive and supporting those astronomical price tags.

    I also loved Pascal. Getting the UCSD Pascal system for my first Apple II was a life changing event!

    Some things don't require it. Serious. Do you require scientific evidence that if you let go of a rock suspended over your foot you're going to get hurt? If it makes you happier, I'd love to conduct a blind taste test, which I will get right EVERY SINGLE TIME. because you'd have to have literally lost ALL sense of taste to fail.
