...was enabling children to view filthy content via the Internet...
No, it's parents not restricting children's access that enables them to view anything they want.
Ten are not the first, and they're not the last. Welcome to the Internet.
ZorinLynx: *exactly*. I was about to post in this thread something along the lines of what you've said. Most of the people at my school I don't want to associate with. The internet lets me pick and choose my friends more carefully.
What are you USers doing whinging? 1.5mbit/256kbit ADSL is $80/month here if you live in an area that can get it. Telstra is slowing things down as much as possible.
OK then. Go the OS X way then and hide it all from the user. Linux can still be in/dev,/etc,/proc,/bin and so on but Joe Sixpack doesn't see it.
It isn't so hard to hide directories. Joe Unix Admin on the other hand can tick a box in the control applet or run a command and see the Linux tree as normal.
Is that so hard?
I agree, python is excellent for beginners. The prompt allows people oto easily explore new functions and concepts while the indenting syntax forces neat code.
I get teased a lot at school because I guess I fit the geek stereotype - overweight (hey, exercise is difficult when you're disabled), no girlfriend, and yes I spend quite a bit of time on the computer.
Aside from all that I also do exercise in my wheelchair, go swimming, go to the gym and generally get way from the machine. There has to be a line between work and play - a lot of my work is on the computer.
In my IT class we were asked if 24x7 availability was a good thing. It's not. Again there has to be a line between work and play although I do agree with the people saying it allows for non standard working hours. That's a good thing if I happen to be wide awake and thinking at 3am. It happens.
From problems with uninstalling and problems caused with having Symantec stuff to a system with fully up to date Norton Anti-Virus defs - 18 viruses found... use AVG, Spybot & Adaware.
Of all the things Apple does right and wrong, that's gotta be one of the very, very right things. On my PC laptop, putting the machine in Standby still eats right into the battery, whereas putting one of our school's iBooks to sleep leaves plenty of battery for work (that's when the batteries are new, though).
Hibernation is on the right track, but on a slow laptop hard drive it still sucks.
"opens the path for Microsoft and Internet Explorer 7 to regain marketshare" So? Innovate. Give users a reason to stick with another browser.

Bring out your dead! Bring out your dead! ...I'm not dead yet!

I always lie?
Broadband is utter crap here (in Australia) so that might make it harder to get a distro... that said, I did once download a Debian ISO on 56k.
I really hope some of these ideas make it out of the cage known as SlashDot -- into the community where they can actually be useful.
...make blog content effectively invisible to your average searcher...
Ever seen how many spammy blogs are out there?

I read the title as "Do stealth Starbucks suck?" Nuff said.
Princess Leia??!
can't tell the Internet from Internet Explorer. I think the same could be said for Australians, or citizens of any other Internet-enabled country.
Did anyone else think of One Must Fall 2097/Battlegrounds when they read that headline? Although I think the OMF robots were 90ft :)
