Etherboot has made my life so much easier. As the parent mentioned, Etherboot allows any supported network to do a PXE boot whether or not the card actually supports PXE.
Also if you don't want to carry around a separate disk for each nic, there is a patched disk available at etherboot.anadex.de. That one disk contains support for all Etherboot-supported cards. This can probably be made into a el torito cd, but I haven't tried it.
For most of my work, I use a a linux-based (w/ captive ntfs) pxe image. But, using UBCD win is a great tool. I can do many things that you cannot do with a linux-based setup. Like resetting Windows passwords, running Ad-Aware, etc.
Download Ultimate Boot CD for Windows. It needs a Windows XP CD to create it's ISO. You can actually run it from Wine (that's how I make mine).
It builds on Bart's PE. Bascially it's a Windows Live CD, similar to something like Knoppix only with terrible hardware detection and support*. It includes several virus scanners and Ad-Aware and Spybot. Works quite nice for scanning an infected computer. It also includes tools for reseting passwords, etc. It's very useful if you're stuck dealing with Windows machines.
*You can include drivers if you know all the possible hardware you'll be using. It's just a pain in the ass. I only bother adding in as many network cards as I can (so I can update the definitions for the scanners).
I have an XP Pro CD and I just type in whatever license code is on the sticker attached to the box in question. Then I install SP2.
You do know that you can slipstream SP2 into a Windows CD, right? Just do it once and you'll never have to wait for SP2 to install again. Here is a tutorial:
If you're using PHP, you need to give BBClone a try. Just do an include from your scripts and it's good to go. The stats it generates are quite nice. I also use Webalizer on the server logs.
This bill and bills like it are a horrible idea. The power and success of the Internet is that it's lightly regulated and robustly competitive, especially for hosting services
Hosting, yes, but not isps. Lets see what my choice for broadband is: Comcast or Satellite. Wow, that is extremely competitive.
I have to use Comcast, as satellite is throttled to the point of being useless. All the sattelite providers I've seen have a "fair access policy". With that you can't download more than 169megs in a four hour period, at which point your connection is throttled to dialup speed. Forget about streaming audio or video. Forget about downloading a Linux ISO. Forget about being able to update Fedora. If I have to bother with throttleing my downloads or scheduling them, then fuck it. I'll do it with dialup and save the extra $80/mo.
There is a fix for the broken PNG support. There are several scripts out there such as "IE7" and pngfix.js. I like the pngfix.js one as it's very small and only fixes png support.
While it is quite crippled, Visual C++ Express is quite useable after installing the XP Platform SDK and wxWidgets. I'm working on a project at work using that as the Windows compiler (most of the work is being done on OS X and Linux).
Here's a good tutorial on making Visual C++ Express useful:
I use both Qemu and VMWare extensivley, but what are you smoking to think that networking is easier in Qemu? No offence. With VMWare, you select a network type (bridged/nat/host only) and from then on it just works. I've spent many days messing around trying to get Qemu's networking to work with no success (Linux host os). I do like Qemu, it works great for testing.
Have you found a tutorial for networking in Qemu that actually works or is up to date?
Really. It saves you in the long run. It's difficult to make something something validate as, say, XHTML 1.0 Strict if html is scatterd all through the code. It will also be difficult to change the look later.
If you're using PHP, there is an excellent library called Smarty. It makes using templates very easy.
$smarty = new Smarty; $smarty->template_dir = "templates"; $smarty->compile_dir = "template_c"; $smarty->assign("title", "The title of the page."); $smarty->assign("products", $products); $smarty->display("template.tpl");
With this I can easily change the layout later. No messing around with trying to find all the embedded html.
Smarty also allows you to include other templates from within the template. There are tons of features in Smarty, it greatly improves my productivity.
Or you could try the version of OO in FC5. I'm simply amazed every time I launch it. It only takes about 7 seconds now, and that's with java enabled. It even feels significantly more responsive while using it. Even on a slower machine it works great (I have to deal with a few 450MHz PII's at work).
That page is out of date. It also claims that the ac3 and aac support is unusable, but it works quit well. I haven't tried in Media Player, though. I use Media Player Classic (GPL'd and has a minimal interface).
Audacity is written with wxWidgets and runs on Linux, *BSD, Mac, and Windows.

K9copy
DVDFab Decryptor + DVD Shrink . This solution works under Wine, too, and unlike my many experiences with K9copy, does more than segfault.
Avidemux
VirtualDub. It's GPL'd and works quite well under Wine. Unlike my experiences with Avidemux, the audio and video actually sync (wtf is it with that? transcode and DVDRip do it to, forcing me to use windows apps under wine).

This is the lyrics to Anti-Flag's "Anatomy Of Your Enemy" which was on their 2002 release "Mobilize" (btw, pick up the recently released "For Blood and Empire", awesome cd...):
10 easy steps to create an enemy and start a war: Listen closely because we will all see this weapon used in our lives. It can be used on a society of the most ignorant to the most highly educated. We need to see their tactics as a weapon against humanity and not as truth.
First step: create the enemy. Sometimes this will be done for you.
Second step: be sure the enemy you have chosen is nothing like you. Find obvious differences like race, language, religion, dietary habits fashion. Emphasize that their soldiers are not doing a job, they are heartless murderers who enjoy killing!
Third step: Once these differences are established continue to reinforce them with all disseminated information.
Fourth step: Have the media broadcast only the ruling party's information this can be done through state run media. Remember, in times of conflict all for-profit media repeats the ruling party's information. Therefore all for-profit media becomes state-run.
Fifth step: show this enemy in actions that seem strange, militant, or different. Always portray the enemy as non-human, evil, a killing machine.
[Chorus:] THIS IS HOW TO CREATE AN ENEMY. THIS IS HOW TO START A WAR. THIS IS HOW TO CREATE AN ENEMY.
Sixth step: Eliminate opposition to the ruling party. Create an "Us versus Them" mentality. Leave no room for opinions in between. One that does not support all actions of the ruling party should be considered a traitor.
Seventh step: Use nationalistic and/or religious symbols and rhetoric to define all actions. This can be achieved by slogans such as "freedom loving people versus those who hate freedom." This can also be achieved by the use of flags.
Eighth step: Align all actions with the dominant deity. It is very effective to use terms like, "It is god's will" or "god bless our nation."
Ninth step: Design propaganda to show that your soldiers have feelings, hopes, families, and loved ones. Make it clear that your soldiers are doing a duty; they do not want or like to kill.
Tenth step: Create and atmosphere of fear, and instability and then offer the ruling party as the only solutions to comfort the public's fears. Remembering the fear of the unknown is always the strongest fear.
[Chorus (repeat)]
We are not countries. We are not nations. We are not religions. We are not gods. We are not weapons. We are not ammunition. We are not killers. We will NOT be tools.
Mother fuckers I will not die I will not kill I will not be your slave I will not fight your battle I will not die on your battlefield I will not fight for your wealth I am not a fighter I am a human being!!!
Try 2.14. I've been using KDE since thee the 0.x days, but I'm now a GNOME user. In the past I'd try every new release of gnome but would be fed up with it after a week or two and switch back to KDE. I've now been running 2.14 since FC5 came out and I have no desire to change. I really like it. It feels very fast, starts fast, and looks very nice. I'm really digging the "Applications/Places/System" menus.
If you're using Firefox like you said, there is a fix for sites like that.
In the menu, click on "Edit" and go to "Preferences". When the prefereces dialog opens select the "Content" tab. Text to the checkbox and label "Enable JavaScript" click on the "Advanced" button. Uncheck "Move or resize existing windows".
Everything else is cash. I keep about $30 on me usually, more if I'm at a concert (where water is around $4/bottle). If I'm going to a store to buy something I stop by an ATM on the way.
It by default runs as root. WTF. That is one of the worst parts of Windows, why bring that to Linux? Especially when under Linux it's not necessary (ie, properly designed applications). It does seem that Freespire will create a regular user by default, though.
IMHO, the Mac OS X and Ubuntu approach of disabling root is the best idea. I set up all my Fedora desktops to behave the same way. Hopefully that will become the standard for desktop systems.
What are you talking about? When FC5 was officially released I installed it (the 64-bit version) on my main workstation (AMD 64 3200+, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9200). It installed the kernel headers for me after I selected it. Even with the stock kernel, I had OpenGL (I bought the 9200 specifically for the open source accellerated drives), and even VMWware Workstation's drivers compiled successfully after using the vmwware-any-any updates. yum update works flawlessly.
Since them I've done about a dozen test installs in VMWare and have deployed it to over two hundred computers, including PII's, PIII's, P4's, K6-2's, Athlons, Athlon XP's, and Athlon 64s with various ATI and nVidia cards (which are now accellerated). I have not had any problems like you describe.
Are you mixing incompatible repositores? Like RPMForge and Livna? I use these:
I also use Unattended. For me, at least, one huge advantage is that it doesn't require a Windows server.

Supports just about everything in use and works great. I use the builds from here when trapped in Windows:

Are you sure about that? I'm currently running three computers with FC5:
Athlon 750MHz 640mb RAM w/ Matrox G450
Athlon XP 2500+ 256 MB RAM w/ integerated nVidia GeForce4 (open source, non-accellerated drivers)
Athlon 64 3200+ 4GB RAM w/ ATI Radeon 9200 (open source, accellerated drivers)
On all three FC5 feels much faster and more repsonsive. I've been impressed enough with the performace with GNOME 2.14 to switch from KDE.
I haven't checked to see if the Matrox one is accellerated (I don't play games on that one any more), but it does feel very fast.
