The voters elected a Congress with no concern for their enumerated and severely powers. Republicans, Democrats, Greens and Independents are equally evil.
Maybe Geeks around the nation should unite and form a "Technocrat" party in which it pushes reform on patents, copyright, and champions universal broad band access to all.
Maybe push nuclear power and the space program while we are at it... When it comes to moral or ethical debate like abortion or gay marriage we will just mumble something about states rights and letting them deal with it while continuing the fancy power point presentation about how innovation in technology makes life better than passing legislation.
Why? Does being a divorced mother of five make you immune from having to obey the law?
Well if you are OJ Simpson...
No but seriously. people on Juries aren't law experts. They are people off the street like you and me. They are swayed by emotions and creative display of facts. If this were a single male known for drug dealing that avoids child support, then a jury composed of average people would subconciously figure this guy is a criminal anyways and rule against him.
If the jury sees this poor working mom (much like themselves) is being harrased by a multi-million dollar corporation of something they themselves might participate or have sympathy with situation (the jury members might have kids that download music too ya know), they might rule in favor of the defendant regardless of the law.
I congratulate you on being the first person I've ever seen who compared illegally downloading music to rape,
Music piracy is like genocide... Genocide of all those Benjamin Franklins being systmatically exterminated out of the wallet of those poor music companies. Oh the humanity! Call the UN!
I suggest you look up what an anology is. What I said was at best a metaphor. I was referring to human nature when it comes to polling them about illegal activities. Not comparing downloading music to speeding.
Do you really think polls of illegal activities are valid? Most people don't confess to wrong doing to others out of the blue when asked by a stranger and secondly law enforcement doesn't catch everyone who commits a crime so no one really knows the numbers.
Although I'm a big fan of CAD, but $2.99 per episode for something watched online seems a bit steep unless these are downloadable in iPod video format.
I've actually bought DVD of Homestar Runner - Strongbad Emails and enjoyed them very much and would like to see the same eventually happen with CAD.
The only way to level the playing field is to have multiple ISPs and a single infrastructure company which provides the lines. The infrastructure company is not alowed to sell to the customer directly nor compete with the ISPs.
Or to sum it up...
The person who owns the lines can't sell directly to the consumer, however anyone else can act as an intermediary.
Otherwise we'd just have what we have now... Those who own the lines hold a monopoly on the service.
Secondly, since the line owner cannot provide direct sales to the consumer the ISPs will have to provide the email servers and IP address.
It is kind of what Earthlink does now except they still compete with the telco's and cable companies indirectly with broad band. However, most telco's and cable co's actually like and would prefer customers would actually go with earthlink on occasion because Earthlink is paying for support of the customer, modem, and emails servers.
Believe me... Email servers to end user's are pain and a huge cost to maintain.
Earthlink pays the telco's/cable co's directly and they pocket pure profit. (Unless of course Earthlink keeps calling out telco trucks to check the NID on people's houses and then Bellsouth gets rather pissy)
As such, equating prohibition, which affected the majority of the adults in the US, with something currently used by, what, 2-3% of the population (half of which are probably teens), is yet another major fallacy.
When pulled over and asked, only 2-3% of car drivers admitted to speeding.
You can't read it or delete it just like any other mail that doesn't belong to you. If someone posts a letter through my front door I don't want them poking an unwrapped coat hanger through the letterbox to try to hook it out again. Same goes for email.
It is a bit different in the internal corporate world. Emails are seen as internal memos and are the property of the company and not you. If your boss or his supervisor wants to read your email they can and they will and they are legally ok to do that. I can't remember how many times a top level manager (or various others on the chain) has called at me screaming that they need to recall something confidential they sent the wrong employee (one involving a notification of termination *coughs*).
If you send the message to someone outside the company... Well... Can't help you there.
Most of the companies I have contact with use Outlook because of its meetings and appointments.
If a linux program can integrate with email to schedule tasks and meetings and have that information on a central server that everyone can view then that is all they really need.
Well... They also need server side rules and out of office replies.
Oh thirdly, they need the ability to recall messages and see if messages have been read by recipient. Its a corporate thing, trust me.
Oh and delegation! All these corp suits have this administrative assistants who need to be able to modify their calenders, read, their emails, send on their behalf, and then schedule meetings and set reminders.
Outlook can do all of the above, so can Groupwise, and so can Lotus Notes (well except the recall message and read receipt feature).
If a Linux program (or OS X program for that matter) can do all of the above then companies will be able to switch without too much problem. Pop mail and simple Imap won't cut it.

It is all part of the victimization of Humans.
Well, if you don't know you are a victim, then how are you going to not be one.
Secondly, if you discount psychology then you yourself may fall victim to "creative use" of psychological methods of other humans. You know... Like advertising, brainwashing, fundementalism, extremism, politics, zealotry, and various other forms of persuasion inflicted on the human mind.
(What is really the "kick in the head" is that if you disagree with me, then you had no choice but to disagree with me. You are a victim of disagreement!)
I don't look at it as an addiction, really. There are those who have an honest drive for information. My life, my job and my hobbies revolve around information. I always think about the "it:" How does it work, where did it come from, why isn't it better, who else likes it?
Well, by the articles definition, I am also addicted to air and water.
Further, if the "regular users" you're deploying to aren't Linux enthusiasts there will be a decrease in productivity
Why should the "regular users" care? It isn't there job to say what OS they use for their job. If it was up to me, I'd gave a set list of applications they need to run their job and have those icons on the desktop.
Everything else would be disabled and all command lines, start menues, system file searching, and tweaking would be disabled by default. This would be regardless of if it is Windows, Linux, or OS X.
You are supposed to be doing your job. Not futzing with computer settings and installing non-authorized software.
Your company pays people to do that. Not the "regular users".
Unless you like uninstalling spyware, removing programs, and re-imaging hard drives.
Why would you introduce something into an environment that nobody really knows how to use?
Because they didn't know how to use the first environment to begin with.
Trust me... If you work corp help desk, you would understand. It wouldn't matter if it is Windows, Apple, or Linux... It is all the same to most people who don't know computers. *coughs*
art n. 1. Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature. 2. a. The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium.
b. The study of these activities.
c. The product of these activities; human works of beauty considered as a group. 3. High quality of conception or execution, as found in works of beauty; aesthetic value.
Apparently the Apple File Sharing had become unchecked after the patch and by rechecking it and rebooting both machines it resolved the issue (oddly enough it wouldn't resolve the issue til they were rebooted)
I installed updates on a 10.3.9 and a 10.4 machine and it appeared fine til I noticed I can't share files anymore between the two machines. Might be a configuration change though.
Well... If we use those stocks of Neutron bombs and reduce the world's population down to 1 billion or less, we'll have saved a bunch of money and time debating in the issue.
Plus the nuclear winter will keep the planet cool for a bit longer. Win win!

Another problem with your logic is that you assume bandwidth is as free as the air we breathe.
If it is not, then it should be.
Why? The GPL2 does everything I want it to.
Yeah! Windows 2000 did everything I wanted it to do as well, but damn Microsoft had to go make Windows XP! Bastages!

Quiet you! I'm not buying a Xbox360, but a Sony PS3!!
Now, you'll have to exscuse me while I listen to my Celine Dione CD... Hrm... And also find out why my CPU usage is at 100%!

But do these groups comprise 6 to 10% of the users? No way.
Yeah, I agree. The figures should be up towards 60-75%
Lord knows that the Las Vegas casinos and the Van Nuys porn industry would be bankrupt without these fellows.
I don't look at it as an addiction, really. There are those who have an honest drive for information. My life, my job and my hobbies revolve around information. I always think about the "it:" How does it work, where did it come from, why isn't it better, who else likes it?

Define Beauty.
And by whose opinion is it beautiful?
Apparently the Apple File Sharing had become unchecked after the patch and by rechecking it and rebooting both machines it resolved the issue (oddly enough it wouldn't resolve the issue til they were rebooted)
nstalled yesterday. No problems so far

Yeah lets bankrupt the entire world on a hunch!
Well... If we use those stocks of Neutron bombs and reduce the world's population down to 1 billion or less, we'll have saved a bunch of money and time debating in the issue.
Plus the nuclear winter will keep the planet cool for a bit longer. Win win!
Which has nothing to do with global climate change at all.
But everything to do with solar and cosmic radiation which sucks just as bad.
It's only censorship when the government does it. When the market does it, it's called "developing a salable product."
Self-censorship is still censorship.
Especially if they do it out of fear of government retribution.
