True, the hardware is cheaper. However, my experience with Apple hardware is that it generally has a longer life than PC hardware. You can still use an iMac from 2000 to run OS X.
Of course You can upgrade significantly your imac (sic!) or powermac without buying a new one? I doubt.
I enjoyed Mac OSX while I was using it, but having KDE on my Linux box which is working perfectly well without paying extra for eye-candy case works fine form me too:)
I can tell you that 15 year olds today only use Microsoft to play games or pirate, not as a development platform like the 15 year olds a generation ago.
But I can. And what was the point of Your comment? Just that You don't know developers using MS products. That is worthless statement.
I am slowly learning assembly language for the c64 from an old kids book i found for 50 cents. It actually MAKES SENSE now...
And does x86-asm does not make sense to You? Come on it is not so difficult to understand the concept of Assembler if you have some Computer Engineering knowledge and a bit of imagination.
To the parent: I hated Computer Architecure classes with prehostoric processors. I believe that some concepts, like caching, must have changed through all this years. I would really like to start from one or two examples of 'first ever' processors/systems and then continue with something more advanced like current constructions, after all it is supposed to be HIGHER education.
Of course there are others manufacturers but still, this can be bad news, as others may follow. I was once playing in a dark room and since it was on amateur level, only black&white was achivable. Well, lets just hope that Agfa, Fuji and others will continue their production cause there is something really fascinating in self-made prints. Digital photography is convinient, but traditional is just fun.
Unless something significant changes, the only place I see Linux as having real potential for growth is with embedded systems that don't require any direct OS interaction and run on perdictable hardware platforms.
... wait and see the face of the guy when he plugs my Canon USB printer and runs Linux. Why do we care about compatibility of modern PCs? Except for accelerated 3D there are no issues any more. The issues arise when it comes to peripherals! And NO, buying Linux compatible hardware does not solve all the problems, imagine going with a linux laptop to a friend that doesn't have linux friendly printer.
1. You pay for quality product, such as Mini, so consider buying quality PC. 2. You don't have to loose performance for quiet, nor does it take a lot of time.
To Do: 1. Change stock power supply. You don't have to get poor performance one, there are 400W supplies WITHOUT fan, but there are also cheaper options with quite quiet fans. Say, about $70. 2. Change CPU box fan for some quality Zalman, or water cooling in extreme case. Zalman, say $20-30.
So, $100 + 10 minutes to order and + 10 minutes to mount it in:)
Ok, but frankly... How many of You download a TV show when you can see it on-air? If You miss the show, even if You record it on your own VCR, you can use showview to exclude commercials, can you?
Of course I am not talking about shows on paid channels, I suppose MPAA won't make a difference.
TV shows are copyrighted, but is their distribution illegal? Decreased quality, the network label in the screen corner. After all you are not selling the same stuff after rebranding. I am probably missing some important point here.
It was either a programming error (human) or an operator error (human) or some other cause. OK, clearly hardware faults can cause data corruption, but this is really pretty rare and it's hard to believe that a hardware fault could cause such a widespread fault.
Another good reason to eliminate The Human Factor. Let the Robot Age begin!
Frankly speaking, even if it is advertisement, take a look at the comments count. Apparently this is news for readers of/., or at least good opportunity to make laugh/shout/insult/etc.
Well, in fact, at least in Europe, iPod is not the only harddrive mp3 player and I doubt it has dominating position. iRiver and Creative has it market share. So the topic is misleading, comments are silly. Oh my.
The problem with iMac is that i do hate all-in-one solutions, and as I have been working few times with iMac's lately I find it quite uneasy to adjust the screen position that suits me.

I really hope that won't be true. I hope that Longhorn (aka Vista) won't be just an outlook pseudo improvement.
I hope not.
Hmm, Microsoft IT Academy comes to my mind.
Unfortunatelly, Yahoo! also attaches adds to Your outgoing e-mail's :(
My point is 'geek appeal' which implies the hobbyist in us
You do have a point, but still, how can You explain numerous GPLed and Freeware applications available on Windows?
SharpDevelop or free beta MS Visual C# Express are so easy to get and you can do A LOT as hobbyist and even more.

Give a kid laptop with long lasting battery plus a wi-fi and throw him outdoors. You solve all the problems ;)

:) beat this!
You forgot about one thing: servers
Oh YES! Lotus Notes 6.x is great, but only trial version is available for mortals.

It is getting crowdy up there!
Ok, but...

Wake up Neo. This is a dream. This is a big lie!
If You think that 20dB from the PC case is a lot then maybe You should think it over.

We had DRM'ed MP3, now we have DRM'ed electronic equipment - intentional self desctruction?
Which, by the way, sucks big time due to not easy programming process.

Simply Apple is not for all computer users.
Actually they sell, you can read about it on CNNi rbus. launch/index.html?section=cnn_latest

But not in USA. You subside Boeing you buy 777, EU subsides Airbus, we buy A380.
