>>What I'd need to buy Macs for the office is a headless machine that delivers a single Core 2 Duo, a gig of RAM, integrated graphics, and a basic desktop-class SATA drive in a user-serviceable chassis for around $1100.
Do you _really_ need a Core 2 Duo? It typically runs about 15% faster than the Core Duo.
I don't understand what you have against the drive in the mini. It might be the size of a notebook drive but it'll receive significantly less abuse.
Learn how to pop open a mini and it'll be as user serviceable as any desktop. Its not difficult.
Apple offers the solutions but they're not _exactly_ what you want.
>>Both parties have their people propose some ridiculously broad, sweeping changes to deal with the problem which would negatively impact everyday lives; fortunately, the more ridiculous ones are more likely to fail.
You can't get anywhere in politics if you allow the more radical elements to represent their party. Ignore them.
In the interest of bipartisanship you've equated the wholesale removal of civil rights with the suggestion that we shouldn't use so much oil.
Last summer I went hiking through the British countryside and managed some 550 miles and 40+ pubs. I came back feeling so good that I started to question why walking isn't a bigger part of urban design in the US. These are the highlights from my reading list -
What most of the world doesn't understand about the US is that we're so freakin' big. Yes, politics in most of the rest of the world are more global but thats because many countries are so much smaller. The US is roughly five times the population of the UK. Imagine London, Glasgow, Cardiff, and Belfast - times five! It certainly isn't healthy for the US to have such a disinterest in international politics but its not entirely due to stupidity either.
I did the same thing and people really just don't understand how it can change your perspective.
Biking fixes so many things with the american lifestyle - lack of exercise, burning fossil fuels, paying for car insurance, and paying for the whole car. If this could be mainstreamed then it would be the biggest and most positive cultural change in our nations history.
The ride to and from work becomes a battle. You get to your desk and an coworker asks how you're doing and you want to respond, "I'm awesome! I'm here!" By the time you get home at night you've spent more time exercising than a lot of gym jocks do. Further, the ride really does change your understanding of the city and how it works - how traffic patterns change over the seasons and how different portions of th city work together.
The surprising part is how small the sacrifices are. You have to wash more sweaty clothes and perhaps shower once you get to work. But two hours of exercise doesn't take more than half an hour away from your day.
Have you seen the ipod shuffle? It has a major advantage over your SD card - it'll play to a standard mini-stereo jack. From there? Earbuds _OR_ bitchin' system.
>>We have far overshot the carrying capacity and are damaging the Earth, but I don't see all the environmentalists supporting, uh, "population correction".
Perhaps thats because population doesn't equal polution. The US releases about a quarter of the world's CO2 production with about 5% of the world population.
>>This is solely the fault of humanity and only humanity can stop it: fiction.
It doesn't have to be "our fault" to try to fix it. As for stopping it - humanity tends to be the only force that fixes humanity's problems.
>>Of course knowing how ambitious the Clintons are, once can't help but suspect this is more about Hilary's run in 2008 than it is about saving the planet.
If only saving the planet and political ambitions overlapped more frequently...
>>Opportunity now is traversing Victoria's rim
anyone else find that strangely erotic?

Can you back that one up? Its new to me.

You have to get the opposing viewpoint to understand a topic. Its fascinating to get the arguments for sprawl largely to see what they leave out.

Many great ideas on the problems of urban sprawl but unfortunately few solutions.
Aaaaah! Your sig might change my world! I spent an hour mucking about with the damn epson print utility last night!

Telcos? No way!
The GAS companies!
Why? Bigger tubes.
>>As I said, no disrespect was meant I was just trying to point out I have so much on my "doorstep", that I'd never see it all
Eh, some people feel that way about the small town they grew up in.
Its certainly correct that being hostile to foreigners is really dumb. However, comparing cultural value just doesn't make sense.
>>This article further supports my theory that the field of psychology is bunch of bull-shit. Neurology is a science.
Neurology is bullshit! Day after day, I'm reading things about neurology that are later proven wrong. Thats not science! Science is always right!

>>the successful demolition of a bridge--it is usually prudent to study the situation thoroughly beforehand
We're talking about terrorism. The terrorists don't need to project which way the bridge will fall - a crude strike at major supports is sufficient.
>>Studying the bridge in situ for an extended period of time is probably going to be unworkable.
Why? You can walk right up to it. You can stare at it for hours. Perhaps even from a starbucks.
>>I'm sorry, but I don't understand what "lie" you're referring to.
The lie that we're better protected because security guards harass people with cameras.
>>Are you one of those people who believes that nobody who photographs a bridge may be planning to blow it up?
Please explain to me how being able to photograph something YOU CAN WALK UP TO AND TOUCH specifically aids terrorism.
The lies have been repeated so much that people believe them. This is one of them.

Harnessing free energy must be easy!
