The transition to hybrids will most likely be gradual, it is not like everyone is going to be driving a hybrid tomorrow. Mechanics will slowly adapt also, they can't expect cars to stay the way they are forever. It is like saying that any new software is bad because not enough people know how to use it. People learn, it is what skilled professions do in order to maintain their usefulness. Adapt or go out of business.
WHOA! Most two stroke engines are terrible for the environment if you don't use bio-diesel to power them. Yeah, they get good gas milage, but they spew all sorts of crap (have you ever smelled one driving by? It isn't very pleasent). Bio-diesel, OTOH, smells like french fries and you can get it for pretty much free if you have some restaurunts around that have relativly clean grease. (Asian food places had the best grease when my friend toured the country in a bio-diesel bus).
Of course, if you lived within two miles of your work, why wouldn't you just bike in the first place and save the truck for when you need it, saving that (just under a) gallon of gas per week.
That and you get healthier by doing so!
I understand the winter argument though.
Bravo for having a fairly rational reason for this, other than "screw off you damn frenchie", which I hear far too often.
The interface to Gaim is not bad at all compared to the likes of AIM Client, and I prefer the non-flashyness of it actually to that of MSN. But I never use the video/voice features anyway but what I do do that sets Gaim apart from AIM/MSN/Yahoo! is I chat with people on all three networks without blinking an eye. No multiple programs, no fussing with different windows. They all appear in the same chat box without me even having to think about it.
So, I can see why people would use MSN if you used video/voice extensivly, but I really do not think that most people do (I know maybe one person who uses video on occasion). So, different strokes I guess. But I would venture to say that the right tool for the job for most people would be Gaim or Kopete. Ease of use coupled with multiple network support, minus some of the flashier features that the vast majority of people do not use. Also, Gaim is available on Windows (and works VERY well, might I add). And I have had just as many problems with MSN file transfers (at least, before I switched to Gaim) as I do now with Gaim, mostly due to firewall issues.
Seriously though, why do people not see this? Canada's gun control laws are not that much stricter than ours and yet they have just over one third of the killings we have.
I think the problem lies deeper than gun control laws here, my friends.
The college I go to, Western Michigan University, just accepted a couple thousand transfers from colleges down there and they arrived by plane yesterday.
I agree. Earth will survive, it has for millions of years. Life will survive, just as it has. The same might not be able to be said for most of the life currently on the planet (read: humans). This isn't about protecting the Earth, it is about protecting the human species.
Try Ubuntu Linux, I had an install up and running in 45 minutes. Amazing hardware detection and super easy program install/uninstall through a GUI. Highly recommended. There is also Kubuntu if you prefer KDE.
but also has been going on for years in the music industry itself.
(note: price of cds - hell, most soundtracks cost more than the damn dvd of the movie)
so there have been no cost reductions in the manufacturing of these cds since their inception?
riiiiight...
especially when i can pick up a cd from an indie artist with a low production yield (therefore higher price per cd) and grab it for between $5 and $10 and they still make quite the profit on the damn thing. $7-$12 if I get it through an indie label.
Not this $18-$22 stuff that is going on through the major labels.
Unfortunatly, I think that one of the main ways to get people concerned about the environment when it is still a controllable problem is to point to the buildings in their city covered in soot and say "See? This is a problem."
If we make those buildings all nice and shiny it could take a bit more to get people riled up about stopping the pollution, making it alright for more to enter the skies because it is no longer a visible problem.
and reduce the pollution? Technologies like this just make it seem like pollution is alright. Out of sight, out of mind.
How about buildings with living roofs or use solar panels and wind turbines to reduce reliance on the local smog producing powerplant.
Or move on over to and build a community to reuse energies wasted by other nearby businesses (like the heat that would otherwise be lost through restaurant ovens can be used to help heat the floor above, etc).
Or, you know... we can just pretend it is not there. Either way...
Coca-Cola comes to mind here also. There is a large, worldwide campaign against their actions going on in Columbia currently.
Pretty much what happens is that Coke's workers in Columbia try to unionize and try to get some fair labor laws and living wages put into place.
Now these unionizers all turn up dead shortly after... coincidence? This has been going on since 1989. The murderers/tortureers get their information from the Coca-Cola plant management.
This and with the parent's DeBeers example it is not hard for me to fathom Exxon (a company who's record is spotty at best already) doing things like that.
he's not nessessarily anti-bush, before the bush administraition he poked plenty of fun at the clinton administration. it's mostly whoever is in power gets made fun of (thought Gore and Kerry each had their fair share too).
And have you watched the show recently at all? I would say the Bush jokes and the democrats are pussies jokes almsot even out (or are at least getting a lot closer).
And besides, when you have an administration as absurd as the Bushie admin, how can you NOT make fun of it? Its just so easy...
its also not your "right" to be able to legally drive, its not nessessary. Sure, you can drive illegally, but then you pay the consequences.
"Rights" and privlidges are two different things.
CNN all of a sudden has the stones to criticize the government? Now THATS news to me. All CNN does it snuff the current administration's butt (since Ted Turner left, anyway).
Ditch the super model anchors, ditch the massive filters what stories you bring to America (NOT ONE story on the genocides), and then I'll start watching again.

That was actually really insightful, thanks!
So, Google is pretty much the only left... good to know.
Winamp is now owned by AOL, and has been since WA3 if memory serves, I feel like they won't be sueing MS anytime soon.
But I would think AOL would have the money to sue if they wanted to...

Microsoft would first need to do some R&D on the best build order for a 'ling rush though...
The college I go to, Western Michigan University, just accepted a couple thousand transfers from colleges down there and they arrived by plane yesterday.
I read the headline and thought it was saying there were eight reasons Hyrdro-Chloric Acid (HCl) was still in its stone age and got really interested.
thank you for that, AC, my day has been brightened.

At least I hopeno one actually believes we are "winning" the war on drugs.
But futile speculation is what /. does best!

Just an observation. I somewhat hope it is not like that in Avalon (whenever the hell it is coming out).

i'm in that camp... thats $35 i dont have!
thank god for the local library! (which actually has more movies than the local blockbuster...)
